To control Microsoft Edge’s Process Isolation on Windows 11, configure the Enable Process Isolation policy in Group Policy, or set the equivalent administrative registry policy. Choose Enabled to turn it on, Disabled to turn it off, or leave the policy unset to follow Microsoft’s gradual rollout. Restart Edge after changing the policy; it does not refresh dynamically.
Choose a configuration method
Use Group Policy when the device is managed by an organization or when you want an administrator to enforce the setting. Use the registry policy location only when you administer the device directly and understand how Windows policy settings are managed. This is an administrative policy, not a switch in Edge’s regular Settings interface.

| Method | Best suited to | Control and risk |
|---|---|---|
| Group Policy | Administrators and managed Windows devices | Provides an explicit policy setting and is suited to centralized enforcement. Applying the wrong policy state can change Edge’s process protection. |
| Registry policy | Direct policy configuration on a device | Sets the corresponding Edge policy value, but requires careful editing of the correct policy path and value. |
Enable or disable it with Group Policy
Microsoft’s Windows policy is named Enable Process Isolation. It is in the Microsoft Edge Administrative Templates; the template file is MSEdge.admx.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Local Group Policy Editor or the applicable Group Policy management tool.
- Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
- Open Enable Process Isolation.
- Select Enabled to turn on Process Isolation, or select Disabled to turn it off, then apply the policy.
If you do not configure the policy, Edge follows Microsoft’s gradual rollout process rather than an administrator-forced enabled or disabled state. Microsoft’s policy documentation describes the setting as mandatory-capable and non-per-profile, and lists it as applicable to profiles signed in with a Microsoft account.

Configure the equivalent registry policy
For direct administrative configuration, the Edge policy is at SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. The value name is ProcessIsolationEnabled and its type is REG_DWORD. Microsoft’s example for enabling the policy uses 0x00000001. The cited example does not specify a numeric value for Disabled, so do not infer one from that example.
Registry policy changes affect Edge when it starts. If you use this route, change only the intended Edge policy value and follow your organization’s policy-management practices; the registry is not a consumer-facing Edge toggle.

Restart Edge for the change to take effect
ProcessIsolationEnabled does not support dynamic policy refresh. If Edge was open when you changed the policy, close and restart the browser so it reads the new setting. Restarting Windows is not specified as necessary by Microsoft’s policy documentation.

What Process Isolation does—and its compatibility trade-off
Microsoft says Process Isolation helps prevent authorized applications on the device from reading or modifying Edge’s running processes and accessing encrypted data used by Edge. Microsoft also cautions that the feature may conflict with third-party software that injects into or tampers with Edge processes, including some antivirus, screen reader, and window manager applications. The documentation does not quantify a security benefit or performance cost, and it does not guarantee compatibility with any particular application.

If an application stops working as expected after enabling the policy, check with the application vendor or your administrator before changing security policy on a managed device. Disabling Process Isolation removes this policy’s protection; it is not a general troubleshooting substitute for diagnosing the conflicting software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse it with other Edge isolation features
| Feature or policy | What it controls | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
ProcessIsolationEnabled |
Protection of Edge’s running processes against access or modification by authorized applications on the device, as described by Microsoft. | This is the policy covered in this guide. |
OriginKeyedProcessesEnabled |
Separates most origins into distinct processes and can increase the number of processes. | It is a separate policy. Microsoft’s documentation lists Windows support starting with Edge version 141 and says its unset default is disabled at the time of that documentation (updated 2026-05-22). Its recommended registry policy location is SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeRecommended, not the Process Isolation policy location. |
SitePerProcess |
Prevents users from opting out of Edge’s default site-per-process behavior when enabled. | Disabling or leaving this policy unconfigured does not itself turn off Site Isolation; it is not a substitute for ProcessIsolationEnabled. |
| Microsoft Defender Application Guard | A separate hardware-isolated browsing feature with its own deployment and enterprise configuration. | It does not toggle Process Isolation. Microsoft says Application Guard is deprecated for Edge for Business and is no longer available starting with Windows 11, version 24H2. |
Microsoft’s policy metadata for ProcessIsolationEnabled states “Windows: ≥ 151.” This is Edge browser-version support notation, not a Windows 11 version number. Microsoft’s Process Isolation policy documentation was last updated 2026-07-16.
