Prerequisites and compatibility checks
Before troubleshooting, verify the basics so you don’t waste time on settings changes that won’t help.
- Android version: Confirm your device is on Android 12 (Settings → About phone → Android version).
- Device support: Live Captions availability varies by manufacturer and model. If the toggle doesn’t exist, your device may not support it.
- Language support: Live Captions may require an installed speech/caption language pack. If captions aren’t available, check language settings.
- Accessibility permission: Live Caption runs as an Accessibility feature. Make sure Accessibility permissions are not restricted by a work profile or device policy.
Enable Live Captions using Quick Settings
Quick Settings is the fastest way to turn Live Captions on. The feature usually appears as a toggle button in the shade.
- Swipe down from the top of your screen to open Quick Settings.
- Look for Live Caption (sometimes shown as an icon with caption lines).
- Tap Live Caption to switch it On.
- If prompted, allow required Accessibility permissions and confirm.
If you don’t see the tile, use the Settings method below to enable it, then check Quick Settings again.

This method is the most dependable because it doesn’t depend on whether the tile was added to Quick Settings.
- Open Settings (from the app list or the gear icon).
- Go to Accessibility.
- Tap Live Caption.
- Switch Use Live Caption (or the main toggle) to On.
- Wait a few seconds for the caption service to initialize.
Once enabled, you can usually bring captions up automatically when media starts playing or when audio is detected—exact behavior depends on your device build.

Disable Live Captions (two reliable ways)
You can turn Live Captions off quickly from the overlay or from system settings.
Disable from Quick Settings
- Swipe down to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Live Caption again to switch it Off.
Disable in Accessibility Settings
- Open Settings → Accessibility.
- Tap Live Caption.
- Turn the main toggle (Use Live Caption) to Off.
Disabling it stops the caption overlay and stops the audio-to-text process from running.
How to manage behavior and caption language
On some Android 12 builds, the Live Caption settings screen includes controls that affect when captions appear and what language is used.
Check the installed caption language
- Go to Settings → Accessibility → Live Caption.
- Look for a Language or Caption language option.
- Select a supported language and confirm.
If you don’t see language options, your device may use system language settings or a limited set of built-in languages.
Control caption visibility and style (if available)
- Open Settings → Accessibility.
- Search for Captions or Live Caption options.
- Adjust any available settings such as display size or caption appearance.
Not every Android 12 phone exposes appearance controls for Live Caption. If your screen only shows the toggle, you may have limited customization.

What to do when Live Captions won’t turn on
If the toggle does nothing or you can’t find Live Caption in Accessibility, use this checklist in order.
1) Confirm Live Captions exists on your phone
- Go to Settings → Accessibility.
- Use the search bar and type Live Caption.
- If there’s no result, your device likely doesn’t support Live Captions on Android 12.
2) Restart the caption service by toggling
- Open Settings → Accessibility → Live Caption.
- Turn it Off and wait 10 seconds.
- Turn it On again.
3) Check for a work profile or policy restriction
If your phone is managed by a company/school, Accessibility features can be limited. Look under a work profile menu (if present) or ask your administrator.
4) Reboot the phone
A full restart clears stuck accessibility services. After reboot, enable Live Captions again from Accessibility and test with media playback.
5) Update system components (when available)
Some devices download caption speech components on demand. If you see any “install” or “download” prompts on the Live Caption screen, complete them before testing.
What to do when Live Captions runs but captions are blank
Turning it on isn’t enough—captions can still appear blank if there’s no capturable audio or if the input source isn’t supported.

Start with a known audio source
- Play a short video from YouTube or your built-in media player.
- Wait 3–5 seconds and check whether captions appear.
If captions work with local media but not a specific app, the app’s audio routing may not be supported by Live Captions on your device.
Check the volume and mute state
- Unmute the phone and raise volume to a normal level.
- Use wired headphones or Bluetooth and test again.
Some setups (especially certain Bluetooth configurations) may affect audio capture behavior.
Verify you’re not blocking the overlay
- Minimize or close full-screen overlays.
- Check that you didn’t disable the caption overlay permission or accessibility display.
Try switching the caption language
- Go to Settings → Accessibility → Live Caption.
- Change language to match the audio language.
- Turn Live Caption Off then On again.
Common mistakes that break Live Captions
- Expecting it to caption everything: Live Captions works best with media/system audio it can capture. Some apps may not be compatible.
- Testing on silence: Captions need actual spoken audio. Try with speech, not background music only.
- Wrong language: If the audio language doesn’t match the caption language, text may be missing or inaccurate.
- Keeping it off in Accessibility: If you enabled it once via a tile, but later turned it off in Accessibility, Quick Settings may look active while the service is actually disabled.
Live Caption vs subtitles: what’s the difference on Android 12
Subtitles are authored and stored with specific content (for example, captions shipped with a video). Live Captions are generated in real time from whatever audio your phone is capturing.
| Feature | Source | Coverage | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live Caption | Audio captured from your device | Best-effort for supported audio sources | System-level toggle in Accessibility/Quick Settings |
| Subtitles | Text included by the video/app | Only for supported media that provides subtitle tracks | Per-app controls (for example inside the video player) |
If Live Captions is missing or inaccurate for a specific video, check whether the app offers subtitles for that title.
FAQ
Why can’t I find Live Caption in Accessibility on my Android 12 phone?
Some Android 12 devices and regions don’t ship Live Captions as a supported feature. Use Settings search for Live Caption; if it returns nothing, your model may not support it.

Does turning off Live Caption disable captions permanently?
Turning it off simply disables the feature right now. You can re-enable it anytime from Accessibility or Quick Settings.
Will Live Captions work during phone calls?
Call caption support depends on your device and Android 12 build. If your Live Caption settings mention call support, try it with a test call. If captions don’t appear during calls, your setup likely limits Live Captions to media/system audio.
Can I change the caption language on Android 12?
If your device exposes language settings under Settings → Accessibility → Live Caption, you can change it there. If not, your device may follow system language settings or available caption packs.
Why are captions delayed or incorrect?
Real-time transcription can lag slightly, especially with noisy audio or fast speech. Try a clean audio source, increase volume, and match the caption language to the audio when possible.
Bottom Line
To enable Live Captions on Android 12, use either the Live Caption tile in Quick Settings or go to Settings → Accessibility → Live Caption and toggle it On. To disable it, switch the same toggle to Off.
If the feature isn’t available or captions are blank, confirm your device supports Live Caption, verify language and audio source, then restart and retest with a known media player.
