When it’s on, Outlook keeps progress so you’re less likely to lose changes if you close a window, sign out, or your connection drops.
In 2024, the key is that the option isn’t labeled the same way across every Outlook app. This guide shows you exactly where to find it (or why you might not), for Outlook on the web, classic Outlook for Windows, new Outlook for Windows, and Outlook for Mac.

What Autosave Emails Means in Outlook
Most people mean draft autosave—Outlook automatically saves your draft as you write so it can restore your work. Depending on your version, it may appear under settings like AutoSave, Auto-save drafts, or Save messages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesImportant distinction: this isn’t the same as rules, message retention, or archiving policies. Autosave is about draft recovery during composition.

Before You Change Settings: Which Outlook Are You Using?
Outlook has multiple clients, and Microsoft uses different settings surfaces. Confirm your app first so you don’t waste time hunting the wrong menu.
| Platform / App | Common name you’ll see | Most likely setting label |
|---|---|---|
| Browser | Outlook on the web (Outlook.com / Microsoft 365) | AutoSave drafts |
| Windows | Classic Outlook | AutoSave |
| Windows | New Outlook | AutoSave drafts |
| Mac | Outlook for Mac | AutoSave drafts |
How to Enable or Disable Autosave in Outlook on the Web (Outlook.com / Microsoft 365)
This is the most consistent experience for users on Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com. The setting toggles draft autosave behavior while you compose messages in the browser.
- Open Outlook on the web: go to
https://outlook.office.comorhttps://outlook.com. - Sign in, then select Settings (gear icon) in the top-right.
- Select Mail > Compose and reply.
- Find AutoSave drafts.
- To enable autosave: switch AutoSave drafts to On.
- To disable autosave: switch AutoSave drafts to Off.
- Close the Settings pane. Your change applies immediately.
How to Enable or Disable Autosave in Classic Outlook for Windows
Classic Outlook (the traditional desktop app) uses a different settings path than Outlook on the web. Depending on your build, you may see an autosave-related toggle for composing and drafts.
- Open Outlook on Windows.
- Select File in the top-left.
- Choose Options.
- Select Mail.
- Find the section that controls drafting/saving. Look for AutoSave or a draft-related option such as saving drafts while composing.
- Set it to:
- On to enable autosave.
- Off to disable autosave.
- Click OK.
What if you don’t see the toggle? See the troubleshooting section below—some tenants/builds only expose autosave in newer clients or through policy.

How to Enable or Disable Autosave in New Outlook for Windows
New Outlook generally presents draft autosave as a straightforward switch in its settings UI. If you’re using the “new” client (with the simplified ribbon), follow this path.
- Open New Outlook for Windows.
- Select your profile icon or Settings (gear icon), depending on your layout.
- Go to Mail.
- Select Compose and reply (or a closely named subsection).
- Find AutoSave drafts.
- Switch it to On to enable or Off to disable.
- Close settings; the change applies right away.
How to Enable or Disable Autosave in Outlook for Mac
On macOS, Outlook typically supports auto-saving drafts in the composing experience. The setting may live under Outlook’s preferences rather than account settings.
- Open Outlook on your Mac.
- In the menu bar, click Outlook (top-left), then Settings.
- Select Mail.
- Look for AutoSave drafts (or similarly named compose/draft option).
- Turn it On to enable, or Off to disable.
- Close the Settings window. Your change should apply immediately.
Mobile Notes: Outlook iPhone and Android
Outlook mobile apps (iPhone, iPad, and Android) may not offer the same granular “autosave drafts” control as desktop and web clients. Some experiences rely on server-side caching and local draft handling.

What to Do If You Don’t See the Autosave Setting
Missing toggles usually mean one of four things: you’re on a different client, your admin disabled it via policy, you’re using an app layout that hides the option, or your Outlook build predates the feature.
1) You’re on the wrong Outlook client
Classic Outlook, new Outlook, and web Outlook don’t share identical settings pages. If you’re unsure, look at the UI: new Outlook uses a different layout and Settings experience than classic Outlook.
2) Your organization controls the behavior (policy)
In Microsoft 365 environments, admins can enforce certain behaviors. If your work account doesn’t show the toggle (but your personal account does), ask your IT admin whether autosave/drafts are governed by policy.

3) Your app version is outdated
Autosave controls can appear or change between builds. For example, Windows “new Outlook” evolves often; after updating, revisit Mail > Compose and reply.
- Windows: update Outlook from Microsoft Store or the Microsoft 365 update mechanism your org uses.
- macOS: update via Microsoft AutoUpdate or your standard Microsoft update channel.
- Browser: web Outlook updates automatically, so refresh after changes.
4) You’re expecting “autosave” when you mean something else
People sometimes conflate autosave drafts with AutoArchive, retention rules, or “save sent messages” behavior. Those are different settings with different menus.
Common Mistakes and Gotchas
- Confusing drafts with sent mail. Autosave drafts affects composition recovery, not whether your sent messages are stored or archived.
- Disabling autosave can reduce recoverability. If you frequently lose drafts due to crashes or network drops, turning autosave off may increase the chance you’ll lose work.
- Testing in only one client. You can disable autosave in web but still have it enabled in desktop. Check each client you use.
- Sign out/in not required, but refresh can help. Web changes apply immediately, but desktop clients sometimes need a restart if you don’t see the effect right away.
Comparison: Draft Autosave vs. AutoArchive vs. Server-Side Behavior
Outlook has several “saving” concepts. If you disable autosave drafts and your mailbox still behaves differently than expected, the cause is often one of these.
| Feature | What it affects | Where you’ll usually find it |
|---|---|---|
| AutoSave drafts | Progress you type while composing an email | Compose/reply settings in Outlook clients |
| AutoArchive | Old items moved/archived based on time policies | Classic Outlook: File > Options > Advanced |
| Retention policies | Mailbox retention and deletion based on org policy | Admin-controlled in Microsoft 365 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling autosave delete drafts?
Usually no. Disabling autosave stops new automatic draft saving while you compose. Drafts that were already saved remain in your Drafts folder (if they were created before you turned the setting off).

When autosave drafts is enabled, Outlook is more likely to preserve your message content so you can recover it. With autosave disabled, you may lose unsaved changes if the message isn’t manually saved or sent.

Why does autosave feel inconsistent between devices?
Because Outlook settings can be different across Outlook on the web, new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook, and Outlook for Mac. Also, drafts may be cached differently depending on your connection and client behavior.
Can my employer force autosave on?
In many Microsoft 365 tenant setups, admins can control or limit certain options. If your account doesn’t show the toggle (or it keeps reverting), your best path is to contact your IT admin.
Bottom Line
To enable or disable autosave emails in Outlook (draft autosave), go to the compose settings in the specific client you’re using—most commonly Mail > Compose and reply on Outlook on the web and new Outlook. Classic Outlook and Outlook for Mac may show the option under different preference screens.
If the setting is missing, verify you’re in the right Outlook client, confirm your app is up to date, and check whether your Microsoft 365 admin controls drafting behavior.
