A VPN badge appears beside the address bar; click it to check that the connection is on and, if available, choose a virtual location. This feature routes Opera browser traffic through a VPN server, but it does not cover every app on your device or guarantee access to a blocked website.
Turn on the built-in VPN in Opera for desktop
- Open Opera’s Settings.
- Select Go to full browser settings, then open Features.
- Find VPN and switch on Enable VPN.
- Look for the VPN badge beside the combined address and search bar. Click it to view the on/off switch, virtual location, and virtual IP address.
Opera’s Help pages describe the setting under Settings → Advanced → Features; labels and paths can differ between versions. If you do not see the option, check the Features section in your browser’s settings. Once enabled, you can use the badge to turn VPN off or select a location. If you do not select one, Opera assigns an optimal location. Opera’s desktop setup guide and Opera Help describe these controls.

Enable VPN in Opera for Android
Opera’s Android FAQ says VPN can be enabled in Settings or from the start page while using private mode. Availability depends on the country and Opera version; in some cases, VPN is available only in private mode. Follow the controls shown in your installed version rather than assuming one path applies to every Android user. Opera’s Android VPN FAQ covers the mobile options.

What Opera’s free VPN changes
The free VPN routes connections made in the Opera browser through an Opera VPN server. Websites then see the server’s apparent IP location rather than your ordinary IP location, and Opera says the connection between the browser and VPN server is encrypted. Opera lists three broad desktop virtual regions: America, Asia, and Europe. These are regional choices, not a detailed city-level selector. Opera also says the free service has unlimited data transfer. Opera Help and its May 2026 security article describe the feature.

What “bypass restrictions” means in practice
Changing the apparent IP location can affect region-dependent results, but it does not ensure a particular site or service will load. Websites can apply their own location checks and other access rules; Opera does not promise that its VPN will unblock any specific site. Treat location switching as a capability, not a guarantee.
Browser protection is not whole-device protection
The free built-in VPN covers Opera browser traffic, not every app or connection on your computer or phone. If you need device-wide coverage, Opera sells VPN Pro as a separate option. Opera’s May 2026 article describes Pro as covering up to six devices and offering 48 countries, compared with the free browser VPN’s three broad regions. The product page displayed a price of $4 per month when checked; price and terms can change, so confirm them on Opera’s VPN page. The same page and article distinguish the paid option from the free browser feature.

Privacy limits and Opera’s no-log claims
A VPN is one privacy measure, not a complete anti-tracking system. Opera Help cautions that changing location alone does not stop websites identifying you through cookies, so VPN use does not make you anonymous or replace managing cookies and other browser privacy settings.
Opera Product Privacy & Security Advocate Michael Tegos says that Opera does not log information related to browsing activity or the originating network address when users use its free browser VPN. That is Opera’s statement about its service, not an independent finding by this article. Opera’s statement describes the claim.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Opera reported that Deloitte examined the free VPN infrastructure for desktop, Android, and iOS from June 18 through August 10, 2024. The conclusion Opera quotes says the systems and supporting operations were suitably designed and implemented, in all material respects, against criteria in Opera’s Management Assertion, as of August 10, 2024. That is a time-bounded audit of the free browser VPN—not a perpetual guarantee or an audit of VPN Pro. Opera’s reproduced Management Assertion says the free service has no data-logging functionality and collects no data about browsing activity, history, originating network address, or other identifying information. The article also distinguishes VPN Pro, whose servers Opera says are provided in collaboration with Nord. Opera’s account of the Deloitte audit sets out its scope and quoted conclusion.
Optional automatic VPN on public Wi-Fi
Opera announced an optional desktop setting called Always use VPN on Public WiFi on September 24, 2026. It must be enabled by the user; Opera said the initial rollout was in the United States and France, with other regions to follow. Availability depends on your region and browser version, so look for the setting rather than assuming it is present. Opera’s announcement describes the rollout.

Android VPN and speed considerations
Opera says its Android VPN cannot be used at the same time as the data-savings proxy. Its FAQ states there are no fixed bandwidth or speed limits, but browsing speed can vary with server load. Opera does not provide a speed benchmark in the cited FAQ, so actual performance will depend on the connection and server conditions. Opera’s Android FAQ explains the limitation.
