Before you disconnect
Set up offline access while you still have an internet connection and are signed in to the Google account that can access the spreadsheet. Offline files use local device storage. For an important sheet, explicitly mark that file for offline use rather than assuming it has been saved.

Enable offline access on a computer
The browser workflow supports Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Use a regular browser window: private or incognito browsing must be off. Google’s computer instructions are available in Google Docs Editors Help.

- Connect to the internet and sign in to the relevant Google account in Chrome or Edge.
- Install and enable the Google Docs Offline Chrome extension. Edge users are redirected to the Chrome Web Store to get the extension.
- Check that the computer has enough free storage for offline files.
- In Google Drive, open Settings > Settings and turn on Offline. Google also allows offline access to be enabled in Docs, Sheets, or Slides settings, or from the document-status control beside a file title.
- In the Sheets home screen, open the spreadsheet’s More menu and select Available offline. A checkmark indicates it is marked. If the sheet is already open, you can instead choose File > Make available offline.
- To check readiness, open the sheet and select See document status beside its title. Google says this displays an explanation if the file is not ready for offline editing.
Enable offline access in the Sheets app
On Android and iPhone or iPad, use the Google Sheets app. Google documents both mobile workflows in its Android help and iPhone and iPad help.

Save a particular spreadsheet
- Open the Sheets app while connected to the internet.
- Find the spreadsheet, tap its More menu, and choose Make available offline.
- To open it later without a connection, tap Menu > Offline in the app.
Make recent files available
To have recent files saved automatically when there is enough device storage, open the Docs, Sheets, or Slides app and go to Menu > Settings > Make recent files available offline. The setting is a convenience for recent files; it does not mean every spreadsheet in Drive is stored on the device.
What happens to edits made offline?
Edits made offline sync after the device reconnects. Google Drive Help warns that “New changes overwrite previous changes” and says you can review edits in version history. Treat that as a reason to be careful if the same file is changed in more than one place while devices are offline; do not assume offline changes will merge without conflict. If a spreadsheet is not available offline
- You are already offline: Desktop offline access must be enabled and the file prepared before the connection is lost.
- The browser setup does not work: Confirm you are in Chrome or Edge, not a private window, and that the Docs Offline extension is enabled.
- The wrong account is active: Only one Google account per browser profile can have offline access enabled. Use a separate browser profile for another account.
- The setting is unavailable: An administrator may have disabled offline access for the account.
- There is not enough space: Free up local storage. Google says recent files may be saved automatically when space is available, but mark must-have spreadsheets individually.
- Sync is stuck: Google suggests reloading, checking the internet connection, toggling offline access for the file, or clearing site data. If the file still will not sync, it may be too large; Google recommends splitting it into smaller files.
For Sheets, Docs, and Slides, follow the web workflow above rather than confusing it with Drive for desktop’s streaming or mirroring settings; Google directs users to Drive on the web for these file types.
