How to Enable Nested Virtualization for VirtualBox VMs on AMD Ryzen

Enable VirtualBox nested virtualization on an AMD Ryzen host through the VM’s Processor settings or VBoxManage, and understand what the setting cannot guarantee.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To enable nested virtualization for an AMD Ryzen VirtualBox VM, power off the VM, then turn on Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V in Settings > System > Processor. You can make the same per-VM change with VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --nested-hw-virt=on. This passes available hardware virtualization functions to the guest; it does not guarantee that every nested hypervisor feature will work.

Enable nested virtualization in VirtualBox Manager

  1. Shut down the VM completely. The setting is for a powered-off VM; if it is paused or in a saved state, discard neither state nor data unnecessarily—resume it and shut it down normally.
  2. Open VirtualBox Manager, select the target VM, and choose Settings > System > Processor.
  3. Check Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V, then save the setting.
  4. Start the VM and check whether the guest operating system or nested hypervisor detects hardware virtualization.

Oracle describes the checkbox as passing hardware virtualization functions through to the guest. The documented setting and command-line option are covered in the VirtualBox 7.2.0 Beta 1 User Guide.

Enable it with VBoxManage

Use this option when configuring VMs from a terminal or script:

VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --nested-hw-virt=on

Replace VM name with the VM’s registered name. Keep quotation marks if the name contains spaces, and make sure the command targets the intended VM. The VM must be powered off. Oracle documents --nested-hw-virt=on to enable the setting and --nested-hw-virt=off to disable it.

Manager setting or command line?

Route Best suited to What to watch
VirtualBox Manager One-time setup with visual confirmation of the selected VM. Verify the correct VM is selected and powered off.
VBoxManage Repeatable configuration or automation. Check the registered VM name carefully; a command can target the wrong VM if the name is wrong.

Both routes change the same per-VM setting.

What the setting does—and what it does not guarantee

Nested virtualization lets a hypervisor or virtualization-dependent feature inside a guest use hardware virtualization functions exposed by the host through VirtualBox. The control is a passthrough setting, not a compatibility guarantee. Oracle states: “Hardware virtualization features not present on the host CPU will not be exposed to the guest.” Its manual also identifies nested paging as a feature not supported for passthrough. See the Oracle VirtualBox 7.2 User Guide for the documented limits.

A checked box confirms the VirtualBox configuration, but does not prove that a particular nested hypervisor or feature is available or functioning. The manual does not establish universal support for Hyper-V or any other named nested hypervisor across all Ryzen and VirtualBox combinations.

AMD Ryzen note: virtualized VMSAVE/VMLOAD

Oracle’s VirtualBox 7.0.24 manual says the AMD-host option --virt-vmsave-vmload is enabled by default when hardware virtualization is enabled. Oracle recommends leaving it enabled because it has a drastic impact on nested VM performance. This is a performance recommendation, not a stated prerequisite for turning on nested virtualization. Consult the VirtualBox 7.0.24 manual for that option.

If nested virtualization is unavailable or the guest cannot use it

  • Setting is unavailable: Confirm the VM is fully powered off rather than running, paused, or saved.
  • VirtualBox does not expose the feature: Check that AMD virtualization is enabled and exposed in the host’s BIOS/UEFI. Menu names and locations vary by motherboard; consult its documentation rather than relying on a universal navigation path.
  • The nested product still reports missing features: Check the installed VirtualBox version, host platform, guest CPU features, and the nested product’s own requirements. A successful setting change alone cannot establish compatibility.

The documented command spelling is from the 7.2.0 Beta 1 manual. If you use a different VirtualBox release, consult the manual matching that installation if menu labels or command behavior differ.
