To play Minecraft with console, phone, tablet, Chromebook, or PC friends from Windows 10 or 11, launch Minecraft for Windows (the Bedrock Edition), not Java Edition. Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Xbox gamertag, add friends by gamertag, enable Multiplayer Game in your world, and invite them from the Social menu. There is no separate Windows “enable crossplay” switch.
Does Minecraft support crossplay on Windows 10 and 11?
Yes, but crossplay is controlled by the Minecraft edition. Mojang currently labels the Windows Bedrock game Minecraft for Windows. It can play with supported Bedrock devices including Windows 10/11, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4/5, Android, iOS, and Chromebook. Java Edition uses a separate multiplayer ecosystem and normally crossplays only with Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are operating systems, not separate Minecraft crossplay editions. Two Windows players can still fail to connect if one launches Java and the other launches Bedrock.

What you need before starting
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with Minecraft installed through the official Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft Store.
- A Microsoft account with the Minecraft entitlement. The PC package generally includes both Java and Bedrock, but they remain separate games.
- An Xbox gamertag associated with that Microsoft account.
- An internet connection and the same Bedrock edition on every player’s device.
- Microsoft/Xbox multiplayer and privacy permissions that allow online play.
- For console participants, any required platform online-multiplayer subscription.
Microsoft accounts are free and are used for purchases, Realms, friends, and multiplayer features. Minecraft’s account requirements are detailed at Minecraft Help. Do not create a second account casually to fix a sign-in problem: it may have a different purchase entitlement, gamertag, friend list, and family restrictions.
Step 1: Launch the correct Windows edition
- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Use the edition selector and choose Minecraft for Windows.
- Select Play.
Minecraft for Windows is the current Bedrock label. Minecraft: Java Edition is not the choice for ordinary Windows-to-console or Windows-to-mobile crossplay. Launcher labels can vary slightly by version, so look for the Bedrock entry rather than an old “Windows 10 Edition” name.
Step 2: Sign in with the matching Microsoft account
- Open the Xbox app in Windows.
- Verify that it uses the Microsoft account and Xbox gamertag you intend to use.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and sign in with that same Microsoft account.
- Launch Minecraft for Windows and check the displayed gamertag.
Minecraft’s Windows guidance explains that the game uses the gamertag tied to the Windows Store purchase. If the wrong identity appears, sign out and back in through the Xbox app, then restart Minecraft. An email address is not necessarily the gamertag other players must search for. Step 3: Add friends by Xbox gamertag
- In Minecraft for Windows, select Play.
- Open the Friends tab.
- Select Add Friend.
- Enter the other player’s Xbox gamertag exactly.
- Send the request and wait for it to be accepted or for the friendship status to update.
Bedrock’s Play screen also includes Worlds and Servers tabs. Use the gamertag, not necessarily the person’s Microsoft-account email. Minecraft’s multiplayer overview is at this official guide.

For an existing Bedrock world, use this current invitation path:
- Select Play, then open the Worlds tab.
- Find the world and select its pencil-shaped Edit icon.
- Choose Multiplayer in the left menu.
- Turn on Multiplayer Game.
- Start the world.
- Pause the game and select the Social button in the top-right.
- Select Invite to Play, choose friends, and select Send Invites.
Menu wording can change with updates; the official Bedrock invitation instructions are at Minecraft Help. The host normally needs to remain in an ordinary friend-hosted world. A Realm is the official always-online alternative.

Step 5: Join a friend’s Bedrock world
- Launch Minecraft for Windows.
- Select Play, then open Friends.
- Look for the friend’s joinable world or online status.
- Select the world and choose Join.
Both players generally need to be online, Microsoft/Xbox friends, using Bedrock, and running compatible updated versions. The supported joining options—friend worlds, Realms, and servers—are described in Minecraft’s joining guide.
Use Bedrock Realms for an always-online world
Realms is a private cloud-hosted world that remains available when its owner is offline. It is useful when friends play at different times and nobody wants to keep a PC running. Invited friends do not need their own Realm subscription.

Fix Minecraft crossplay when it does not work
Check these in order:
- Confirm the edition. Everyone joining a console or mobile player must launch Minecraft for Windows, not Java.
- Confirm the account. Check that the Xbox app, Launcher, and game use the same Microsoft account and expected gamertag.
- Confirm friendship. Search the exact gamertag and accept the request on both sides.
- Check the world setting. The host must have Multiplayer Game enabled in the world’s Edit menu.
- Check privacy and family controls. Child accounts may be blocked from multiplayer, invitations, clubs, chat, or purchases.
- Update and restart. Close both games, restart the Launcher and Xbox app, and install available updates.
- Check console service requirements. A console participant may need that platform’s online-multiplayer subscription.
- Use a Realm if hosting is the limitation. A Realm solves host-offline availability, not edition incompatibility.
If multiplayer is unavailable or the invite button is missing
Ask the family organizer or parent to review Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings. Minecraft specifically requires CLUBS and MULTIPLAYER to be set to ALLOWED for online Realms play; related settings control invitations, communication, and purchases. Reinstalling Minecraft does not override an account-level restriction. Review the settings guidance at Minecraft’s account page.
If the game is missing after purchase
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and sign out.
- Sign back in with the Microsoft account that made the purchase.
- Confirm the Xbox app uses that same account and gamertag.
- Restart the Launcher and Minecraft.

Can Java Edition play with Bedrock?
Not through Minecraft’s standard official multiplayer system. Java supports Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux; Bedrock supports cross-device play among supported Bedrock platforms. Realms follows the same separation. If your group needs console or mobile players, choose Bedrock from the Launcher. Choose Java when everyone is on Java and the group specifically wants Java servers, mods, or Java-focused communities.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Minecraft for Windows the Bedrock Edition?
Yes. The current Windows Bedrock product is labeled Minecraft for Windows. Select it in the Launcher for crossplay with supported consoles and mobile devices.
Can Windows 10 and Windows 11 players play together?
Yes, when both launch the same edition—normally Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock) for broad crossplay, or Java Edition for a Java-only group.
Can a Windows PC play with Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch?
Yes, use Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), Microsoft accounts, Xbox gamertag friendships, and permitted multiplayer settings. Console online subscriptions may be required.
Does everyone need a Microsoft account?
For Windows multiplayer and cross-platform features, players need Microsoft accounts and associated Xbox identities.
Does everyone need Realms?
No. Friends can join an active Bedrock world without a Realm. Realms is for a private world that stays online when the owner is offline.
Why can’t a child account join?
A parent or family organizer may need to allow multiplayer and clubs in Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings. Check that CLUBS and MULTIPLAYER are ALLOWED where applicable.
