A convincing neon iPhone Home Screen needs four coordinated parts: a dark wallpaper, a limited electric-color palette, matching icons and widgets, and enough empty space to keep apps readable. The classic iOS 14 method still works—custom images are added as Home Screen shortcuts and widgets supply the glow—but newer iOS releases also offer native Dark, Clear, Tinted and larger-icon controls on supported versions. Choose a neon direction before you redesign
Neon looks strongest when one visual language is repeated across the wallpaper, icons and widgets. Use black, charcoal, navy or deep purple as the base, then choose one dominant glow and one supporting accent.

- Synthwave: hot pink, violet, blue, sunset gradients and horizon grids.
- Cyberpunk: black, cyan, magenta, warning orange, rain and dense city detail.
- Minimal neon: mostly black with sparse glowing line symbols.
- Vaporwave: aqua, purple and pink with retro statues, palms or abstract forms.
- RGB gaming: red, green and blue lighting with a hardware-inspired feel.
- Neon city or space: signs, reflections, skylines, stars, planets or luminous line art.

These are design choices, not Apple system colors. Limiting the palette makes a mixed icon set look intentional.
Pick a wallpaper that preserves usability
Choose a dark or low-saturation image with negative space behind the icon grid and widgets. Put bright signs, a car, skyline or nebula around the edges, and keep the main subject away from the clock and frequently used apps. A quieter Home Screen version is often better than the detailed Lock Screen image.

- Avoid bright detail directly beneath icons.
- Do not place typography where widget labels or app names will cover it.
- Leave padding around thin neon lines so they do not resemble notification badges.
- If text is hard to read, darken or desaturate the wallpaper before changing every icon.
Six complete neon Home Screen layouts
Cyan-and-magenta cyberpunk
Use a matte-black or rainy-city wallpaper. Give communication and productivity apps cyan icons, and entertainment and social apps magenta icons. Place a small clock near the top and a medium calendar or weather widget in the center. Keep six to eight high-use apps on page one and send the rest to the App Library. This delivers a strong cyberpunk look without covering the screen in color.
Minimal electric-blue grid
Use an almost-black wallpaper with a faint blue grid, thin-line icons with one blue glow, one medium clock and no folders on the main page. Restrict the Dock to your four most-used apps. It is clean and gaming-inspired, but offers less room for decorative artwork.
Pink-and-purple synthwave
Choose a sunset or horizon wallpaper with purple shadows. Use hot-pink icons for social and entertainment apps, violet or blue for utilities, and a medium photo or music widget. A second page can use a darker alternate palette while keeping the same icon shapes.

Neon city with a framed subject
Put a car, skyline or street sign on one side of the wallpaper and arrange icons in the open area. Use dark or transparent-looking widgets where available, borrowing their accent color from the image. This layout depends on careful spacing; moving the subject can make the design either clear or unusable.
Monochrome neon
Use a black background, one icon hue—cyan, green or purple—and a single contrasting widget color. On supported newer iOS versions, native tinting and larger icons can create this look quickly; detailed glow symbols still require custom artwork. Functional neon dashboard
Put weather or date at the top, calendar, reminders or a countdown in the middle, and communication and navigation apps at the bottom. A Shortcuts widget can provide quick actions. Use decorative custom icons only for apps you open often, so appearance does not undermine speed.

Create custom neon icons with Shortcuts
On iOS 14, and on newer versions when you want individual artwork, Apple’s supported path is to make a shortcut that opens an app and add it to the Home Screen. Current labels can differ slightly from older iOS 14 tutorials; Apple’s guide is at Shortcuts: Add a shortcut to the Home Screen.

- Add Open App, then choose the target app.
- Open the shortcut’s Details.
- Tap Add to Home Screen.
- Tap the icon preview and choose Take Photo, Choose Photo or Choose File.
- Rename the shortcut if desired, then tap Add.
A custom icon is a separate shortcut, not a replacement for the installed app. Keep the symbol centered, leave padding around its glow, avoid edge-hugging text and test the image at actual Home Screen size. Shortcuts may show a transition or briefly involve the Shortcuts system, depending on iOS version, so do not promise a completely native launch experience.
Add widgets that match the palette
Apple and third-party widgets
To add any widget, touch and hold an empty Home Screen area until icons jiggle, tap Add Widget or +, search for an app, choose a size, tap Add Widget, position it and tap Done. Apple’s current instructions are at Add widgets on iPhone.

Native clock, weather, calendar, photos and music widgets are the simplest starting point. If their colors do not fit, Widgetsmith offers customizable clocks, photos, calendars, countdowns, weather and activity displays, plus colors, fonts, borders, themes and wallpapers. It is listed as free with in-app purchases in the U.S. App Store: Widgetsmith. Its FAQ says you can save up to six custom colors and that iOS widgets do not support animated or video content, so use static glow, blur, gradients and typography instead: Widgetsmith FAQ.
Add a Shortcuts widget
- Touch and hold the Home Screen background and open the widget gallery.
- Scroll to Shortcuts, choose a size and tap Add Widget.
- Tap Done, move the widget, then touch and hold it and choose Edit Widget if you need to select a shortcut or folder.
A small widget can show one shortcut; larger sizes can show a selected collection. Some actions may open the Shortcuts app rather than running entirely in place. Apple documents the behavior at Shortcuts widgets. Third-party widgets can also update on a system schedule, so a weather or clock panel may display cached data rather than guaranteed real-time information.

After adding a shortcut icon, remove the original icon separately: touch and hold the original app, tap Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen. The app remains installed in the App Library. Apple’s App Library instructions are at Organize the Home Screen and App Library.

You can also hide entire pages: touch and hold an empty area, tap the page dots, clear the checkmark beneath a page and tap Done. Hidden-page apps remain in the App Library. This is usually better than creating custom icons for every installed app.

Current controls are version-dependent. If a tutorial says Share → Add to Home Screen but your phone shows a Details menu, follow the labels on your device rather than assuming the feature is missing. Apple’s current reference is here.
Troubleshooting a neon setup
- Original icons still show: remove them from the Home Screen; creating a shortcut does not hide them automatically.
- Launch feels different: a shortcut can show a transition or involve Shortcuts. Test messaging, mail, authentication and calling apps before hiding originals.
- Badges are inconsistent: notification behavior for shortcut icons can vary by app and iOS release, so keep critical apps easy to check.
- Icon looks cropped or blurry: center the artwork, add padding, use consistent square canvases and preview it at Home Screen size.
- Wallpaper overwhelms icons: darken or desaturate the image, or move bright detail to the edges.
- Widget does not update: third-party widgets follow iOS update scheduling and may show cached information.
- Widget is not animated: arbitrary video and animation are not supported in iOS widgets; use a static glow or gradient.
- App disappeared: search the App Library; removing an icon from the Home Screen is not the same as deleting the app.
The fastest good-looking setup
- Choose one dark wallpaper with a quiet center.
- Add one native medium clock, weather or calendar widget.
- Create custom icons for only six frequently used apps.
- Use one glow color plus one accent.
- Remove the originals from the Home Screen and keep everything else in the App Library.
This gives you the iOS 14 neon character with far less maintenance than replacing dozens of icons. Add a third-party widget app only when Apple’s widgets cannot provide the color, type or layout you need.
