The control is usually at the upper right on web and mobile, and at the lower right on TVs. The exact steps vary by device, and the language must be available for that title and your region.
Turn on subtitles by device
Disney+ lets you change audio and subtitle language while a video is playing. Captions (CC) appear in the same playback options as subtitles.

Web browser and mobile devices
- Start playing the show or movie.
- Select the keyboard or playback-settings icon in the upper-right corner.
- Choose a subtitle or caption option, then select the language you want.
- Close the menu with the X or back arrow to save the choice for your profile.
TV-connected devices
- Start playback and open the playback settings, usually at the lower-right corner of the screen.
- Select the subtitle or caption option and choose a language.
- Close the menu to return to the video.
Depending on the device, the control may appear as three dots rather than a keyboard icon.

- While the video is playing, press the asterisk (*) button on the Roku remote.
- Open the caption or subtitle option and select your preferred choice.
Apple TV
- While watching, swipe down on the Apple TV remote to open playback options.
- Choose a subtitle or caption option and select the language.
Will Disney+ remember the subtitle choice?
Disney+ saves the last-used subtitle setting for your profile and generally applies it to the next show or movie if that title offers the selected language. To change it, open the playback menu during the video and choose another option.

What to do when the language is missing
Subtitle and audio choices vary by title and country or region, so a language may not be offered for the video you are watching. Disney+ recommends changing the profile’s app language to check whether a version in that language is available.
- Open the profile menu.
- Select Edit Profiles, then choose the profile you use.
- Set App Language to the language you want and select Done.
- Return to the title and check its playback settings again.
Changing the app language may make a matching version available, but it cannot add a version Disney+ does not offer for that title or region. If there is no matching version, Disney+ may use English or another available version instead. See Disney+’s guidance on video versions and language availability.

Change subtitle appearance
Styling controls depend on the device. Some are in the device’s accessibility settings, while others are available in Disney+ playback settings. The menu labels and locations may differ between device versions, and some browsers do not support subtitle customization. Disney+ lists these common paths in its caption and subtitle formatting guide:

- iPhone or iPad: Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning.
- Google Android: Accessibility > Caption preferences.
- Samsung Android: Accessibility > Hearing.
- Apple TV and Fire TV: Check the device’s accessibility settings.
- Some smart TVs: Look for Subtitle Styling in the Disney+ player.
- Web: Use the styling menu if your browser supports it.
Fix subtitles or captions that look wrong or do not appear
Check the playback setting first, then the device’s accessibility options. Try another video to see whether the problem affects one title or all playback.

- Confirm subtitles or captions are enabled in the Disney+ playback menu.
- Check the device’s accessibility or caption preferences.
- Try a different show or movie.
- Restart Disney+ and check for app and device-system updates.
- If the issue continues, clear the app’s cache and data or reinstall the app.
- Restart the device, check the internet connection, and test playback in another app.
Disney+ also recommends confirming that the device is supported. Its accessibility troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.

Closed captions and subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) are selected from the same playback options. Disney+ says it aims to provide English closed captions or SDH on all titles, while noting rare exceptions and variation in other languages. See its closed-captioning information.
