DirectX 12 is an API—not a switch in NVIDIA Control Panel—and installing a driver cannot add hardware capabilities your GPU lacks. DirectX 12 Ultimate features such as ray tracing also require the game to implement them.
What “NVIDIA DX12 enablement” means
DirectX 12 is Microsoft’s graphics API. Whether a particular game can use it depends on the game, Windows, the driver and the GPU working together. Basic DirectX 12 compatibility is not the same as support for every DirectX 12 Ultimate feature.

NVIDIA groups DirectX 12 Ultimate around four feature families: DXR ray tracing, mesh shaders, variable rate shading and sampler feedback. A game may use one or more of them—or none—even if the hardware supports them. NVIDIA’s DirectX 12 Ultimate overview explains the feature set, but does not provide a complete current, model-by-model compatibility matrix.
How to enable DirectX 12 in a game
- Check the game’s requirements and graphics options. Look for DirectX 12 or a specific feature such as ray tracing in the game’s official requirements and settings. If the game does not offer or support the option, a driver setting cannot add it.
- Install a suitable current NVIDIA driver. Use NVIDIA’s official driver source and follow the installation instructions for your GPU and Windows version. A driver update can provide software support or fixes, but cannot add a hardware feature the GPU does not support.
- Confirm the Windows and GPU requirements for the feature. Check documentation for the exact game and feature. Do not rely on old launch-era requirements as current compatibility guidance.
- Select the option in the game, if available. Depending on the title, this may mean choosing DirectX 12 as the graphics API, enabling ray tracing, or selecting another supported setting. Restart the game if it asks you to.
- Check that the setting is active. Use the game’s own display or graphics menu. If the option is missing or disabled, verify the game version, GPU model, driver and Windows support against the developer’s documentation.
Does your NVIDIA card support DirectX 12 Ultimate?
Support must be checked for the specific GPU and the specific feature. DirectX 12 Ultimate is a collection of capabilities, not a promise that every DirectX 12-capable card supports all four feature families. Consult NVIDIA’s DirectX 12 feature information and the target game’s requirements; the cited overview pages do not establish a complete current compatibility list for every model and driver.

NVIDIA’s June 24, 2020 announcement said DirectX 12 Ultimate was fully supported on GeForce RTX GPUs running Windows 10 version 2004 or newer with the Game Ready driver available at that time. That statement describes a launch-era configuration, not a universal requirement or current setup guide. NVIDIA also described installing that period’s driver through GeForce Experience. See the 2020 announcement for its historical context.
Do you need an RTX card for DirectX 12?
No—not for basic DirectX 12 use. A game can use DirectX 12 without requiring every DirectX 12 Ultimate feature. An RTX GPU may be relevant when a game requires or offers RTX-class ray-tracing support, but the exact requirement depends on the GPU model and game. Check both before considering an upgrade.

When comparing GPUs for a particular game, check the exact feature, the game’s stated compatibility, performance for your resolution and quality settings, memory and system requirements, current driver support and cost. Do not infer a frame-rate gain from the API or feature name alone; results depend on implementation and workload.
What the DirectX 12 Ultimate features do
DXR ray tracing
DXR models the behavior of light to produce effects such as reflections, shadows and global illumination. NVIDIA describes RTX hardware as designed for ray-tracing workloads and says it partnered with Microsoft to enable DXR support on GeForce GPUs. Whether you can use ray tracing—and what performance to expect—depends on the specific card, game, settings and workload. See NVIDIA’s DX12 feature overview.

- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Mesh shaders
Mesh shading gives the GPU a larger role in geometry processing and level-of-detail decisions. In complex scenes, this can reduce pressure from CPU-managed draw calls, but the engine must implement the feature for a game to benefit. NVIDIA describes mesh shaders in its DirectX 12 feature overview.
Variable rate shading
Variable rate shading (VRS) lets an engine vary shading detail across parts of an image. It can spend more GPU work on visually important regions and less elsewhere. The result depends on how the game applies VRS; support alone does not guarantee a performance improvement or a visible quality change.

Sampler feedback
Sampler feedback helps an engine track texture use and manage texture streaming or texture-space shading. It is a tool for developers and engines, not a player-facing switch that independently improves every game.
What developers need to know
Developers have a different enablement task from players: they must implement the API features in their engine or application and account for the runtime and driver environment. NVIDIA’s DirectX developer resources describe Microsoft’s DirectX 12 Agility SDK as a mechanism for evolving DirectX independently of Windows OS releases, so developers can use newer graphics features while targeting a broad range of Windows versions.

For implementation and version-specific requirements, consult the current Microsoft Agility SDK documentation alongside NVIDIA’s developer resources. The cited NVIDIA page explains the SDK’s role but does not establish which SDK release is current or provide feature-by-feature implementation instructions.
Why old driver guidance can mislead
NVIDIA’s April 30, 2020 preview-driver article described early access to DirectX 12 Ultimate capabilities through preview driver 450.82 for GeForce and Quadro. It covered DXR 1.1, mesh shaders, sampler feedback, VRS and related development capabilities. This is historical context, not a current driver recommendation; see the preview-driver announcement.
Likewise, the June 2020 GeForce RTX and Windows 10 version 2004 details describe that release period. Current support can differ by GPU, feature, driver, Windows version and game. Verify those specifics in current manufacturer and game documentation rather than treating a dated announcement as an evergreen checklist.
