Start with the website’s own theme switcher. If it has no dark-mode control, set your browser or device to dark mode so sites that support the prefers-color-scheme standard can adapt. Pages that ignore that preference will remain light unless you use a dark-mode extension or another forced-recoloring tool.
Use the website’s own dark-mode control first
A site-provided toggle is usually the most accurate option because its designers can adjust text, borders, images, charts, forms and icons together. Look for a sun/moon icon, an Appearance menu, or a setting named Theme, Color scheme or Dark.
If the site offers Light, Dark and System (or Automatic), choose System when you want it to follow your operating system and browser preference. Choose Dark when you want that site dark regardless of the device setting. Some sites remember the choice in a cookie or account profile, so private browsing or cleared site data can reset it.
Set dark mode in Chrome
Chrome on Windows, macOS and Linux
- Open a New Tab.
- Select Customize Chrome in the lower-right corner.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Dark or Device.
Google says this darkens Chrome’s homepage, toolbar, settings and some other pages, but it does not rewrite every website’s CSS. Chrome’s help documentation describes the browser-interface effect.

Chrome on Android
- Tap More (three dots).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Theme.
- Choose Dark, Light or System Default.
System Default follows Android’s theme and may also be connected to Battery Saver behavior, depending on the device. If Chrome changes unexpectedly, check the phone’s Battery Saver and system dark-theme schedules.
Chrome on iPhone and iPad
Chrome for iOS follows the device appearance setting. Open Settings > Display & Brightness on the iPhone or iPad, select Dark, then reopen the page in Chrome if it does not update immediately. Google’s iOS guidance directs users to the device setting.
Set dark mode in Firefox
Firefox desktop
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Select Settings.
- Stay on General and scroll to Appearance.
- Under Website appearance, choose Automatic System, Light or Dark.
Mozilla documents these three choices. Automatic System follows the operating-system preference; Dark asks supporting pages to use a dark palette. Firefox’s own menus can be dark even when a particular site does not implement a dark theme.
Set dark mode in Microsoft Edge
- Open Settings and more (three dots).
- Select Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Under Overall appearance, select Dark.
That setting changes Edge’s interface and communicates a dark preference to compatible sites. It cannot guarantee that every page will switch.

Why Chrome can be dark while a webpage stays white
Browser dark mode has two separate jobs: styling the browser chrome and exposing a preferred color scheme to websites. A page must include CSS and components that respond to that preference. Google recommends the prefers-color-scheme media feature and, where useful, a manual Light/Dark/System control.
A site can remain light when it has hard-coded colors, an incomplete dark stylesheet, a cross-origin embedded frame with its own styling, or content rendered inside a canvas or image. A login portal, payment widget, chart, PDF viewer or video player may also keep its own palette. Reloading can help after changing the setting, but it cannot add dark-theme CSS that the site does not have.
Check a page’s response with DevTools
In Edge, open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+I (macOS). Open the command menu, search for Rendering, then find Emulate CSS media feature prefers-color-scheme and select dark or light. This tests the preference without changing your normal browser setting. If the page looks identical in both modes, it likely has no usable prefers-color-scheme implementation.
What browser support means
Related color-scheme behavior reached major browser milestones in Chrome 98 (February 2022), Edge 98 (February 2022), Firefox 96 (January 2022) and Safari 13 (September 2019), according to Google’s modern-web guidance. These are historical support milestones, not a promise that every website is correctly styled.

Make an unsupported website dark
Use a dark-mode extension
A browser extension can inject styles or recolor pages that ignore the system preference. Install one only from your browser’s official extension marketplace, review its requested permissions and privacy policy, and test it on the specific sites you use. Recoloring can produce a dark page quickly, but it is not equivalent to a site-designed theme.
- Images and video: an extension may invert photographs, logos or video frames, making them look unnatural.
- Charts and code: fixed colors can lose contrast or become indistinguishable.
- Forms and dialogs: placeholders, validation messages and third-party widgets may stay bright.
- Embedded content: an iframe or payment control can ignore the extension.
- Privacy: extensions that read page content can see sensitive data; limit access to sites where possible.
Safari web extensions can declare light and dark support with color-scheme: light dark in their CSS, but that declaration describes the extension interface; it does not force every website to provide a dark design. Safari’s web-extension documentation explains the extension model.
Choose between the available approaches

Check accessibility after switching
Dark is not automatically easier to read. Inspect normal text, links, focus outlines, disabled controls, error messages and keyboard menus. Confirm that white text is not excessively bright against pure black, and that muted gray text still has sufficient contrast. Turn off the extension for pages where photographs, diagrams, maps or code become ambiguous. If you use scheduled system themes, check both light and dark states before an important presentation or support session.
Troubleshooting dark mode
The browser is dark but the site is still white
Look for the site’s own theme menu, reload after changing the browser setting, and test the page with DevTools’ prefers-color-scheme: dark emulation. If there is no visual change, the site likely does not support the preference; use an extension or contact the site owner.

Only some parts of the page changed
Embedded frames, checkout widgets, canvases and third-party components can use separate styles. An extension may offer per-site rules, but forcing colors onto a payment or identity widget can reduce clarity. Prefer the component’s own theme setting where available.
Dark mode keeps reverting
Check whether the browser is set to System Default, whether the operating system has an automatic schedule, and whether Battery Saver changes the theme on Android. Clear site data, private windows and managed-work profiles can also remove a site’s saved preference.
Text, images or controls are unreadable
Disable the extension for that domain, switch to the site’s native theme, or add a narrowly scoped exception. Recheck charts, syntax highlighting, CAPTCHA images and focus indicators before continuing.

Does dark mode work on every website?
No. It works automatically only when the site implements a compatible dark palette or responds to prefers-color-scheme. Otherwise, a site toggle or extension is required.
Is dark mode the same as blue-light reduction?
No. Dark mode changes interface colors. Night Shift, blue-light filters and tinted displays change color temperature or brightness and do not add a website dark theme.
