Enable Windows 11 dark mode at Settings > Personalization > Colors, then set Choose your mode to Dark or Custom. This changes Windows surfaces, but it cannot guarantee that Hyper-V Manager or every older desktop dialog will use dark colors. Microsoft says some applications have their own appearance setting and that not all applications support dark mode.
If a Hyper-V dialog stays white after you change the setting, that is usually an application-support limitation rather than a failed Windows configuration. The official Windows guidance reviewed here does not document a Hyper-V-specific switch that forces all of its legacy dialogs to dark.

What Windows 11 dark mode actually controls
Windows 11 has a supported, system-level color choice. Microsoft’s Personalize your Colors in Windows guidance places it at Settings > Personalization > Colors. Under Choose your mode, you can select Dark or Custom.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The setting affects Windows interface surfaces such as Start, the taskbar and Action Center. It also supplies a color preference that applications can follow. That last part is important: the preference is not a command that rewrites every window. Microsoft explicitly cautions that some applications provide their own dark/light control and that “not all applications support dark mode.”

Hyper-V Manager is a traditional Windows desktop management tool. Its main window, snap-in panes and individual dialogs may not all use the same rendering technology. Consequently, changing the Windows preference can darken some surrounding Windows UI while leaving a Hyper-V wizard, properties window or confirmation dialog light.
Turn on dark mode in Windows 11
- Open Settings. You can select the Settings icon from Start or press Windows key + I.
- Select Personalization in the left-hand navigation.
- Open Colors.
- Find Choose your mode.
- Select Dark if you want Windows’ supported dark appearance wherever the operating system and applications implement it.
- Select Custom if you want to choose different modes for Windows interface elements and applications. Custom is useful when, for example, you want Windows surfaces dark but prefer a light application area.
After changing the selection, close and reopen Hyper-V Manager and any dialog you are testing. Some windows read the color preference only when they launch. Reopening is a practical check; it does not add support to an application that lacks dark-mode implementation.
Dark versus Custom: which setting should you use?
| Choice | What it does | When it makes sense | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark | Requests dark mode for supported Windows surfaces and applications. | You want the broadest consistent dark appearance with one setting. | It cannot make an unsupported legacy dialog dark. |
| Custom | Lets you mix light and dark choices rather than applying one mode everywhere. | You want Windows elements dark while retaining a light application choice, or the reverse. | It does not override an application’s own theme rules. |
Dark and Custom are Windows color-mode choices, not Hyper-V settings. If a program has an independent appearance control, that control is a separate axis from the Windows selection.

What to expect in Hyper-V Manager
There is no Hyper-V-specific dark-mode procedure in the Microsoft Windows guidance covered here. In particular, the documentation does not describe a Hyper-V Manager checkbox, registry value or command that forces every Hyper-V dialog to use dark colors.
Enable Windows dark mode first because it is the supported configuration and may be honored by parts of the application. Then inspect the Hyper-V window and the exact dialog that matters to you. A light dialog after the change does not necessarily indicate that the setting failed; it can mean that the dialog does not implement the Windows dark-mode preference.
Keep the wording precise: Hyper-V Manager may continue to show light dialogs because Microsoft says not all applications support dark mode. That is different from claiming that Hyper-V can never add support in a future release. The current official guidance simply does not provide a Hyper-V-specific force-dark option.

Hyper-V checks after changing the mode
- Confirm that Settings > Personalization > Colors still shows the mode you selected.
- Exit Hyper-V Manager completely and launch it again.
- Open the particular wizard or properties dialog you care about; different windows can have different support.
- Look in Hyper-V’s own menus or options for an appearance setting. If none exists, do not assume a hidden Windows switch is available.
- Install applicable Windows updates, then test again. Microsoft has been adding dark treatment to individual components over time, but those changes are component-specific.
Why some Windows 11 dialogs remain white
Application support is optional
Windows can expose a dark color preference, but each desktop application decides whether and how to consume it. A modern application may provide a complete dark palette; an older program may use fixed colors, classic controls or custom drawing that does not respond to the preference.
Microsoft’s Colors guidance therefore separates the operating-system choice from application behavior. The setting can be correct even when a particular window remains light.
Some apps own their appearance setting
Microsoft notes that some applications have their own dark/light setting. Such a control can override, supplement or ignore the Windows choice. If an application includes a theme, appearance or color option, use that option according to the application’s documentation. Do not treat the presence of a light window as proof that Windows dark mode is disabled.
Dialogs can be updated independently
Even within one product, support can arrive for selected dialogs rather than the entire application. Microsoft’s Windows update notes illustrate this pattern: specific File Explorer and Task Manager dialogs received dark-mode work in particular preview builds, while other dialogs remained exceptions.
Recent Microsoft updates that add dark dialog support
The following notices are dated preview-update descriptions, not promises that every Windows installation has the same behavior. Availability can depend on the installed edition, build and rollout stage.

| February 24, 2026 — KB5077239, OS Build 28000.1643 Preview | Describes dark-mode refinements for File Explorer copy, move, delete, progress, confirmation, file-selection and error dialogs. | This is a dated preview note for specified File Explorer surfaces; it is not a universal legacy-dialog switch and does not document Hyper-V support. |
| November 21, 2024 — KB5046740, OS Build 26100.2454 Preview | Documents dark mode and text-scaling support for Task Manager’s Disconnect and Logoff dialogs. | The note describes gradual rollout, so the behavior may not appear immediately on every device. |
| February 28, 2023 — KB5022913, OS Build 22621.1344 Preview | Describes themes for most Task Manager dialogs. | The note explicitly excludes the Run new task and Properties dialogs. |
These examples explain why Windows can gain dark dialogs over time without making every older window dark at once. They also show why a build number and a component name matter when you troubleshoot appearance.

How to check whether an update could affect a dialog
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install updates offered for your device. Preview updates may have different availability and rollout conditions from generally released updates.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Reopen the application and test the exact dialog again.
- If you are investigating a documented change, verify your Windows build in Settings > System > About and compare it with the build named in Microsoft’s update note.
An update can improve a specific Windows component without changing Hyper-V Manager. Do not infer Hyper-V support from a File Explorer or Task Manager change.
Use a controlled test before changing anything else
When you are diagnosing one stubborn white window, test the same sequence consistently. First note whether Start, the taskbar and Action Center changed after selecting Dark. Next close every Hyper-V Manager window, launch it again, and open the exact wizard, properties page or confirmation prompt that remains light. Finally, switch temporarily to Custom and test the same dialog once more. This separates a Windows setting that did not apply from a dialog that simply does not consume the setting.
Test more than one Hyper-V surface if your workflow includes several. A main management console, a virtual-machine settings page and a confirmation prompt can behave differently. Record which specific windows change rather than judging support from one screen. If ordinary Windows surfaces are dark but one Hyper-V dialog is white, that is strong evidence of a component or application boundary, not a need to repeat the global setting.
Can you force dark mode on a legacy dialog?
There is no Microsoft-documented, system-wide switch that forces every legacy Windows dialog to dark. The supported action is enabling Dark or Custom in Colors and using any appearance option supplied by the application.
Registry tweaks, theme patchers and third-party utilities may be advertised as ways to recolor classic windows, but they are not part of the documented Hyper-V procedure. They can introduce compatibility, servicing or readability problems, and the evidence described here does not establish that they work for every Hyper-V dialog. Avoid presenting them as guaranteed fixes.
If a light dialog is unacceptable for a particular workflow, the reliable choices are limited to the application’s own supported theme control, a Windows component update that explicitly adds support, or continuing to use the dialog in its available light appearance.

Windows themes are related, but not a universal override
Windows also has a Themes area at Settings > Personalization > Themes. Microsoft’s theme guidance describes themes as combinations of backgrounds, colors, sounds and mouse-cursor settings. A theme can change the overall personalization package, while the Colors page controls the light/dark mode choice.
Applying a theme should not be described as a universal override for unsupported application dialogs. If Hyper-V or another classic program does not implement dark mode, changing the Windows theme does not create that implementation. Treat Themes and Colors as related personalization controls with different scopes.
Troubleshooting: a dialog is still white
The entire Windows interface did not change
- Return to Settings > Personalization > Colors and verify that Dark or the intended Custom configuration is selected.
- Close and reopen the affected application.
- Restart Windows if the setting appears not to apply to ordinary Windows surfaces.
Only one dialog remains light
This pattern is consistent with application-level support differences. Check the application’s own settings and consult its current documentation. Microsoft’s statement that not all applications support dark mode applies even when other windows on the same desktop are dark.
A newer Windows component is dark but Hyper-V is not
That result is expected from Microsoft’s component-by-component rollout model. The File Explorer and Task Manager update notes identify the dialogs they change; they do not establish a Hyper-V change. Keep testing focused on the product and dialog you actually use.
Text is difficult to read after a theme change
Switch back to the previous mode or use Custom to choose the combination that remains readable. Because Themes and Colors affect different parts of the interface, changing one does not guarantee that every application will receive a matching palette.

A practical decision guide
| Your goal | Action | Likely result |
|---|---|---|
| Make supported Windows surfaces dark | Choose Dark at Settings > Personalization > Colors. | Supported Windows areas use dark mode; unsupported dialogs can remain light. |
| Mix light and dark choices | Choose Custom and configure the available Windows/app selections. | You control the supported mix, but application-specific limitations still apply. |
| Darken a particular app | Look for that app’s own theme or appearance option, then relaunch it. | The app may follow its own setting independently of Windows. |
| Darken a legacy Hyper-V dialog | Enable Windows dark mode, check for an in-app option and install applicable Windows updates. | There is no documented guarantee that the dialog will change. |
| Use a theme pack | Open Settings > Personalization > Themes. | Backgrounds, colors, sounds and cursor settings can change; unsupported dialogs are not forcibly recolored. |
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
It supports a clear procedure: use Colors, select Dark or Custom, relaunch the application and check for an app-level setting. It also supports a clear limitation: Windows cannot ensure dark mode where an application does not implement it.
Best Value
Microsoft’s dated update notes prove that selected dialogs are receiving improvements, including named File Explorer and Task Manager surfaces. They do not prove that every legacy Windows dialog, every Windows edition or every Hyper-V release has dark support. Build, rollout and component boundaries matter.
For Hyper-V specifically, the responsible conclusion is qualified rather than absolute: turn on Windows dark mode because it is the supported setting, but expect that Hyper-V Manager may still display light dialogs. No official Hyper-V-specific force-dark control is documented in the guidance covered here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I enable dark mode in Hyper-V?
Open Settings, go to Personalization > Colors, and select Dark under Choose your mode. Hyper-V Manager may follow that preference in some areas, but Microsoft does not document a Hyper-V-specific control that forces every dialog dark.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy are some Windows 11 dialogs still white?
Dark mode is a system preference, not a universal recoloring command. Some applications have their own appearance settings, and Microsoft states that not all applications support dark mode. Individual dialogs can also be updated independently.
Can I force dark mode on legacy Windows dialogs?
There is no Microsoft-documented switch that forces every legacy dialog dark. Use Dark or Custom in Colors, check the application’s own theme options, and install updates that explicitly add support. Registry tweaks and theme patchers are not guaranteed fixes.
Should I choose Dark or Custom?
Choose Dark for the broadest supported dark appearance. Choose Custom when you want a mix of light and dark Windows or application settings. Neither choice overrides an application that does not implement dark mode.
Will a Windows update make Hyper-V dialogs dark?
Only an update that specifically adds support to Hyper-V could do that. Microsoft’s notes for File Explorer and Task Manager document changes to named dialogs, not a universal switch or a Hyper-V change.
Do Windows themes fix white Hyper-V dialogs?
Themes can change backgrounds, colors, sounds and mouse-cursor settings, but they are not a universal override. An unsupported Hyper-V dialog can remain light after a theme change.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Personalization > Colors and select Dark or Custom. Relaunch Hyper-V Manager, check its own options and keep Windows updated, but expect some legacy dialogs to remain white because dark-mode support is application- and component-specific.
