On Android, open Brave’s main menu, choose Settings › Display › Appearance, and enable Night Mode. On iPhone or iPad, use Main menu › All Settings › Display › Appearance, then turn on Experimental Night Mode. These controls attempt to darken webpage content. Brave’s ordinary Light, Dark, or Automatic theme changes the browser interface; it does not prove that the site itself is dark. Desktop Brave documents browser color themes, but the reviewed desktop instructions do not establish a supported switch that forces every website into dark mode.
First, distinguish Brave’s two dark-mode controls
“Dark mode” can mean either the color of Brave’s own menus, tabs, and toolbar or a filter that changes the colors inside the websites you visit. They are related but not identical.
- Browser theme: Light, Dark, or Automatic changes Brave’s interface.
- Night Mode: Brave’s experimental mobile control that attempts to force webpage content into a dark theme.
A dark toolbar is therefore not evidence that a page is using a site-authored dark theme. Night Mode can alter pages that were designed only for light backgrounds, and the result depends on the page’s colors.
Enable dark webpage content on Android
The following route matches Brave’s Android help instructions. Labels can move slightly after an app update, so look for the same Display and Appearance sections if your screen differs.

- Open Brave on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the main menu button (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll to Display, then tap Appearance.
- Turn on experimental Night Mode.
Night Mode also makes Brave’s browser theme dark while attempting to change webpage content. Open a few sites after enabling it and check headings, body text, links, images, and form controls rather than judging the result from the toolbar alone.
If you only want dark menus on Android
Use the browser-theme choices in Appearance instead of Night Mode. That changes Brave’s interface without asking the browser to recolor page content. It is the safer choice when you need websites to retain their original colors.
Enable dark webpage content on iPhone or iPad
- Open Brave for iOS or iPadOS.
- Open the Main menu.
- Tap All Settings.
- Choose Display, then Appearance.
- Enable Experimental Night Mode.
In the same area, Automatic, Light, and Dark select the browser’s interface theme. Those three choices are separate from Experimental Night Mode, which is the setting that attempts to darken website content.
Choosing Automatic, Light, or Dark
Choose Dark when you want the Brave interface dark at all times, Light for a light interface, or Automatic when Brave should follow the device’s appearance setting. None of these labels, by themselves, promises that every page will become dark.
What desktop Brave currently documents
Brave’s official desktop appearance guidance covers color themes under Settings › Appearance. That is a browser-interface setting. The documented page does not establish a desktop website-darkening switch equivalent to mobile Night Mode, so do not assume that selecting a dark desktop theme will invert or redesign every website.

If a particular desktop site offers its own dark-theme control, that site’s control is the authoritative way to change its content. If it does not, Brave’s documented desktop theme setting alone should not be presented as a guaranteed webpage dark mode.
An experimental flag mentioned by the community
A Brave Community reply directs Android users to brave://flags/#darken-websites-checkbox-in-themes-setting and says that enabling the flag adds a checkbox. This is user-contributed advice, not an official support instruction. Flag names, availability, and platform behavior can change between Brave versions, and the advice does not confirm a current desktop feature.
If you try the flag, treat it as an experiment: record the original setting, change one flag at a time, and return it to Default if pages become unreadable or Brave behaves unexpectedly. Do not use the flag as proof that Brave officially supports universal desktop darkening.

Why Night Mode can make a page harder to read
Brave warns that experimental Night Mode detects light colors and changes or inverts them. A page with a white background and gray text, for example, can become a black page with dark-gray text. The nominally darker result may have worse contrast.
Color changes can also affect:
- Text that was designed to sit on a specific background color.
- Images, logos, charts, and illustrations whose colors carry meaning.
- Buttons, input fields, focus indicators, and other controls.
- Code samples or status colors that rely on a light palette.
There is no guarantee that Night Mode will match a polished, site-authored dark theme. It is a browser attempt applied to the page that loaded, so two sites—or two areas of the same site—can look very different.
Fixes when a page looks wrong
Text is too dim or disappears
- Return to Settings › Display › Appearance on Android, or Main menu › All Settings › Display › Appearance on iOS.
- Turn off Night Mode/Experimental Night Mode.
- Reload the page and check whether the site’s original contrast returns.
If only one site is affected, leave Night Mode off while using that site rather than trying additional experimental flags.
Images or brand colors look inverted
Disable Night Mode and reload. The feature is not a semantic understanding of every image; it changes detected page colors, so an image-heavy page may not retain its intended palette.

Confirm that you are in Display and then Appearance, not only the general theme selector. On iOS the route includes All Settings. If the Night Mode label is still absent, your installed Brave build may use different wording or may not expose the experimental control. Avoid assuming that a desktop theme selector provides the same function.
A page keeps switching between light and dark
Check whether the device or browser theme is set to Automatic, then check the website for its own appearance preference. Night Mode, Brave’s interface theme, the operating-system theme, and a site’s own preference can all be separate controls. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which layer is responsible.
Night Mode causes a broken layout
Turn it off first. Brave’s warning specifically covers pages whose colors become confusing after detection or inversion. If the problem disappears, keep the feature disabled for that site and use the site’s own dark option if it provides one.

- Want only dark menus and tabs? Select the Dark browser theme and leave Night Mode off.
- Want Brave to attempt dark pages on mobile? Enable Night Mode on Android or Experimental Night Mode on iOS/iPadOS.
- Need dependable readability? Test important sites and disable Night Mode when contrast, images, or controls become confusing.
- Using desktop Brave? Treat Settings › Appearance as an interface-theme control; do not promise that it will recolor website content.
