On Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later, an administrator must first register the compatibility interface, restart Windows, and then set a mode for each program shortcut. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run regsvr32 %systemroot%apppatchslayerui.dll. After restarting, open the shortcut’s Properties > Compatibility tab and select Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
Enable the hidden Compatibility tab
- Sign in to Windows 2000 with an account that has Administrator rights.
- Open Command Prompt.
- Run:
regsvr32 %systemroot%apppatchslayerui.dll - Restart Windows when registration completes.
The registration step exposes the compatibility interface; it does not assign a mode to every application automatically.
Assign a compatibility mode to a program
- Locate the program’s shortcut. Use a shortcut rather than assuming the setting applies to every copy of the executable.
- Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run in Compatibility Mode.
- Choose the environment that matches the program’s original target: Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
- Click OK, then start the program from that shortcut.
Which mode should you choose?

Windows 2000’s described interface provides these two choices. It does not provide an arbitrary list of newer Windows releases, and the available documentation does not establish that either choice is universally superior. If the first choice does not help, clear it and test the other one.
What compatibility mode can—and cannot—do
Microsoft’s Windows 2000 SP2 readme says that applications encountering problems after an upgrade from Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 might function better when started in one of these compatibility environments. “Might” is important: this is an application-specific workaround, not a guarantee that every older program will run.

- Keep the setting on the particular shortcut used to launch the application.
- Test the application’s main features after changing the mode.
- If the program still fails, the cause may be an incompatible driver, copy-protection system, 16-bit component, missing library, or another issue that this setting does not address.
Important warning for installers and system software
Do not use compatibility mode simply to bypass a version check in an installer for system-level software. Installers that load drivers or otherwise operate at a low level can make changes that are unsafe on Windows 2000. Use the vendor’s Windows 2000-compatible release or documented installation method instead; test compatibility mode primarily with ordinary user applications.
If the Compatibility tab does not appear
- Confirm that the command was run by an Administrator.
- Check that the command completed without a registration error.
- Restart Windows after registration; the tab is not expected to appear immediately in every open Properties window.
- Open the shortcut’s Properties again after the restart. The procedure targets Windows 2000 SP2-era systems, not a current Windows installation.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are different
These instructions describe the Windows 2000 SP2-era compatibility interface. They are not verified instructions for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Current Windows versions use newer mechanisms, including executable manifests, compatibility databases, and application-specific fixes, so use the compatibility settings and guidance provided for the version of Windows you are actually running.
