To enable cheats, turn on the commands setting for the edition and place where you play. In Java Edition, choose Allow Commands when creating a world, or open Esc > World Options in an existing world. In Bedrock Edition, use Game Settings > Cheats > Activate Cheats for a new world or Settings > Game > Cheats for an existing one. A Bedrock dedicated server also needs allow-cheats=true in server.properties (or the equivalent host-panel switch), followed by a restart. Cheats and operator status are separate: server players still need to be made OP before they can use administrative commands.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What enabling cheats changes
Minecraft treats cheats as a world or server setting, not as a universal account switch. You must enable them in each world where commands are needed. The wording differs by edition and sometimes by release: Java menus may say Allow Commands or, in older guides, Allow Cheats; Bedrock uses Cheats and Activate Cheats.

Turning the setting on permits command use, but it does not automatically make every multiplayer user an administrator. On a server, an operator (OP) assignment is a separate permission step. Without OP status, a player can still receive a message that they lack permission even though cheats are enabled.
There is an important gameplay cost. Enabling cheats disables achievements in both editions. Bedrock guidance describes that change as permanent for that world, so decide before enabling the switch and keep an unmodified copy if you want an achievement-eligible playthrough.

Edition and location at a glance
| Where you play | New world | Existing world | Separate OP step? | Achievement effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Java single-player | Create New World > Allow Commands (the label may be Allow Cheats) | Esc > World Options > Allow Commands | No server OP roster; commands are available to the local world after activation | Achievements are disabled when cheats are enabled |
| Java Hardcore | The Allow Commands option is not offered | Not available through the normal world-options path | Not applicable to the missing setting | Do not assume a workaround preserves progression |
| Bedrock single-player | Create New > Game Settings > Cheats > Activate Cheats | Settings > Game > Cheats | No separate OP assignment for a solo owner | Achievements are disabled; Bedrock describes this as permanent for that world |
| Bedrock dedicated server | Set allow-cheats=true in server.properties, or use the host panel’s equivalent toggle |
Change the same setting, restart the server, then assign OP to each administrator | Yes | World achievements are disabled when cheats are enabled |
| Java dedicated server | Start the server normally, then grant OP from the console | Grant or revoke OP independently of the world | Yes | Cheat-enabled play does not provide achievement progression |
The table separates documented Bedrock server behavior from Java server behavior. The allow-cheats property is documented for Bedrock dedicated servers in the guides reviewed here; claims that the same key controls Java servers conflict, so do not add it to a Java server expecting it to work.
Java Edition: enable commands in a single-player world
When creating a new world
- From the title screen, select Singleplayer, then Create New World.
- Open the world options section and find Allow Commands. In some versions or older documentation, the switch is labelled Allow Cheats.
- Set the switch to ON.
- Finish the remaining world settings and select Create New World.
Commands are now enabled for that world. The setting belongs to the world you just created; creating another world does not inherit it.

- Load the world and press Esc to open the pause menu.
- Select World Options.
- Turn Allow Commands on. If your build uses different wording, look for the equivalent cheats or commands switch.
- Return to the world and use the chat command interface.
Current versions do not require deleting the world or opening it to LAN just to change this setting. Older tutorials often send players through Open to LAN and an Allow Cheats checkbox; that path belongs to older workflows and should not be treated as the current Java menu route.
Hardcore worlds
Java Hardcore worlds do not offer the Allow Commands option. The normal world-options procedure therefore cannot enable cheats in Hardcore. If you need a command-enabled survival challenge, create a non-Hardcore world and choose the setting during world creation instead of assuming a hidden Hardcore toggle exists.
Bedrock Edition: enable cheats in a world
Before creating a world
- Select Play, then choose Create New and start a new world.
- Open Game Settings.
- Find the Cheats section and switch on Activate Cheats.
- Create the world.
Bedrock records the choice with that world. If the switch is left off, command attempts will not behave as they would in a cheat-enabled world.

- Open the world and pause the game.
- Select Settings, then Game.
- Locate Cheats and flip the switch on.
- Return to the world and open chat to issue commands.
Menu names can shift slightly between Bedrock releases and platforms. If you do not see the exact wording, stay in the world-level Game settings and look for the Cheats section rather than changing unrelated multiplayer permissions.

Edit the server setting
Stop the server before editing its configuration so that a running process cannot overwrite your change. Open the server’s server.properties file and change the line to:
allow-cheats=true
If the file currently says allow-cheats=false, replace only the value after the equals sign. Keep the key spelling and punctuation exactly as shown.
Use a hosting control panel
Managed hosts commonly expose the same property as a switch labelled Allow Cheats or Enable Cheats. Change that toggle instead of editing a generated file if the panel controls the server configuration. The panel may save the equivalent allow-cheats=true value for you.
Restart and verify
- Save the file or panel change.
- Start or restart the server; the new value is not reliable until the server has reloaded its configuration.
- Join the server and test a command as an operator. A non-operator can still be denied even when the server setting is correct.
- If the value returns to
false, make the change while the server is stopped and check whether the host panel regeneratesserver.properties.
Enabling the server switch only permits command use. It does not grant OP status to existing players, and it does not automatically elevate everyone who joins.

Java dedicated servers: commands and OP are separate
On a Java server, administrative access is normally granted from the server console. Enabling a generic cheats setting is not a substitute for adding an operator, and the evidence available for this topic does not establish that allow-cheats is a Java server property. Treat Java and Bedrock server instructions as different procedures.
Grant OP from the console
- Open the server console, not the in-game chat window.
- Enter
op PlayerName, replacingPlayerNamewith the player’s exact in-game name. - Do not put a slash before the command in the console. The console form is
op PlayerName, not/op PlayerName. - Have the player reconnect or retry the command after the server confirms the operator change.
Use the console for the initial assignment when possible. It avoids confusing a missing OP permission with a disabled cheats switch and provides a clear server log entry.
Operator permission level on Java
Java server guides describe op-permission-level as a value from 0 through 4, with a default of 4 reported by one guide. This setting applies to operators created afterward; changing it does not alter the permissions of operators who already exist. Because descriptions of what each numeric level permits differ between guides, verify the level meanings against the documentation for the exact server version before using a number as a security policy.
Grant OP on a Bedrock server
Try the console command first
Use the server console to assign the player as an operator. If the console cannot resolve the player, Bedrock may not yet have generated the account’s XUID entry.
When the player is not recognized
- Let the player join the server once so Bedrock records the account identifier.
- Open the server’s
latest.logand locate the player’s XUID. - Add the player with operator permission in
permissions.json, using the identifier and structure expected by the server version. - Restart or reload as required by that server build, then have the player reconnect.
Editing permissions.json is a recovery path for a console assignment that fails; it is not a reason to skip a backup. Keep a copy of the original file before changing it.

Bedrock OP permission level
Bedrock server guidance reports a default OP permission level of 1. At that level, some administrative commands, including /reload, may be unavailable. The server’s OP permission level setting can be raised when administrators need broader access. The exact available values and labels can vary by server version, so read the comments or documentation shipped with that build before changing the setting.
How to tell whether cheats and permissions are working
Test the two controls separately so a failure points to the right fix:
- World or server setting: confirm that the Java world shows Allow Commands enabled, the Bedrock world shows Cheats activated, or the Bedrock server file contains
allow-cheats=trueafter a restart. - Identity permission: on a server, confirm that the player appears as an operator through the console, host panel, or Bedrock
permissions.json. - Command response: run an administrative command such as
/giveor/tp. A permission error points to OP or permission level; a message saying commands are unavailable points to the world/server cheats setting. - Correct target: make sure you changed the world or server that is actually being played. A second world, a copied server directory, or a panel-managed configuration can make a successful edit appear ineffective.
Troubleshooting common failures
The option is missing in Java
Check whether the world is Hardcore. Hardcore worlds do not expose Allow Commands. If it is not Hardcore, look in the world-creation screen or the paused world’s World Options; the label may be Allow Cheats in an older build.
An existing Java world still rejects commands
Reopen Esc > World Options and verify the switch is on for that specific world. Current versions do not require Open to LAN. If you followed an old guide, stop using its LAN workaround and use the world-options control instead.
Bedrock says cheats are enabled but a command is denied
On a solo world, return to Settings > Game > Cheats and confirm the switch remains on. On a server, check both allow-cheats=true and OP status. The server property enables cheats globally; it does not make every player an operator.
Best Value
The Bedrock server change did nothing
Confirm that you edited the active server’s server.properties, saved it while the process was stopped, and restarted afterward. If you use a host panel, the panel may overwrite manual edits; use its Allow Cheats or Enable Cheats toggle and restart from the panel.

Java console OP command fails
Use the player’s exact name and omit the slash in the console. Check the server log for the confirmation or error, then have the player reconnect. If the player is already an operator but still cannot run a command, inspect the configured permission level rather than repeatedly enabling cheats.
Bedrock console OP command cannot find the player
Have the player join once, obtain the XUID from latest.log, and add the account to permissions.json. Preserve the file’s existing JSON structure and restart as required by the server build.
A command remains unavailable to a Bedrock operator
Review the server’s OP permission level. The reported default is level 1, which can omit higher-level commands. Raise the setting only as far as needed and verify the value supported by your version.
Protecting a world and server before enabling cheats
- Make a backup of the world folder before changing a long-running survival world.
- For Bedrock servers, copy
server.propertiesandpermissions.jsonbefore editing them. - Tell players that enabling cheats changes the world’s achievement status, especially when the world is shared.
- Grant OP only to people who need administrative commands; cheats enabled is not a reason to give every player operator rights.
- Record which account received OP and which permission level was selected so you can audit or revoke access later.
Choosing the right procedure
Use the single-player world menus when you control the world directly. Java players should use Allow Commands at creation or in World Options; Bedrock players should use Game Settings or Settings > Game > Cheats. For a Bedrock dedicated server, change allow-cheats=true (or its host-panel equivalent), restart, and then assign OP. For a Java server, focus on the console’s op PlayerName command and the server’s documented permission settings rather than assuming the Bedrock property applies.
Because labels and permission behavior can change between releases, use the wording shown by your installed edition and confirm server-key names against that version’s own configuration comments. This avoids applying a Bedrock instruction to Java or an older menu path to a current world.
