How to Enable Bluetooth in BIOS [Within 2 Minutes 2024]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most Bluetooth adapters don’t need BIOS changes. You usually only need BIOS/UEFI settings when Bluetooth is blocked at the firmware level (for example, an airplane-mode toggle, a “Wireless” master switch, or a radio control setting), or when Windows can’t power on the device due to a hardware disable.

This guide focuses on the fastest practical path: identify the BIOS setting that controls Bluetooth/radios, enable it, save, then verify the result in Windows. If you already know your system brand, you can often complete it within two minutes.

Important: BIOS layouts differ by model. If you don’t find an exact “Bluetooth” toggle, you’re still likely looking for a radio-related setting such as Wireless, WLAN, WWAN, or Onboard Devices.

What It Means to Enable Bluetooth in BIOS (and when you actually need it)

BIOS/UEFI is the firmware that initializes hardware before Windows loads. Some laptops expose a firmware-level control for wireless radios—Bluetooth included—so the OS starts with the radio enabled.

  • Plug & Play with Free Driver Support - Plug and play for Windows 8.1/10/11 (internet required). Supports Win7 (driver required and can be downloaded from website for free). Download the latest driver from TP-Link website to utilize Bluetooth 5.4
  • You likely need BIOS enable if Bluetooth is completely unavailable: no toggle in Windows, no Bluetooth device in Device Manager, or a persistent “Bluetooth is off” state.
  • You likely don’t need BIOS enable if the Bluetooth device exists in Windows but you just can’t connect—then it’s usually drivers, Windows services, or pairing.
  • Some systems don’t expose Bluetooth at all in BIOS. In that case, firmware control is automatic, hardwired, or managed through a “Wireless” master switch.

Prerequisites Before You Start

  • Power and access: Plug the laptop in (or use fresh battery). Avoid interruptions while saving BIOS changes.
  • Know how to enter BIOS: Restart and press the BIOS key during boot. Common keys are F2, F10, F12 (menu), DEL, or ESC.
  • Disable Fast Boot (if needed): If the Bluetooth setting isn’t visible, Fast Boot can skip some screens—however, you typically must reboot back into BIOS to change it.
  • Have Windows confirmation ready: You’ll confirm results in Windows afterward using Settings and Device Manager.

Find the Right BIOS Setting (names that vary by manufacturer)

Bluetooth is often grouped under a broader wireless control. Here are the setting names you should search for in BIOS setup:

  • Wireless / Wireless Device Control / Radio Control
  • Bluetooth (sometimes appears under Onboard Devices or Peripheral Configuration)
  • WLAN / WWAN (Bluetooth may still be tied to the “Wireless” master switch)
  • Airplane Mode / Flight Mode (enabling can indirectly disable Bluetooth)
  • Onboard Devices / Device Configuration (where Bluetooth is sometimes listed)

Windows 11 confirmation

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Check that the Bluetooth toggle is present and can be turned on.
  3. Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager).

  2. Check the Bluetooth toggle and whether Windows detects a Bluetooth adapter.
  3. Open Device Manager → expand Bluetooth.
  4. If present, ensure the adapter isn’t disabled and doesn’t show an error code.

If You Do Not See a Bluetooth Option in BIOS

Missing the Bluetooth toggle is common. Here are the most likely explanations and what to do next.

  • The system uses a master “Wireless” toggle only. Enable Wireless or set airplane mode to Off.
  • Bluetooth is hardware-controlled and not user-configurable in BIOS. In this case, BIOS won’t show Bluetooth—Windows settings and drivers become the path.
  • BIOS is in a simplified/limited mode. Look for an option like Advanced or Expert Mode to reveal more settings.
  • BIOS update mismatch. On some models, the radio control can change by BIOS version. Check your BIOS version in BIOS setup and consider a vendor update.
  • Fast Boot or quick boot hides some menus. Disable Fast Boot in BIOS if available, then re-check wireless settings.

Troubleshooting Checklist (when enabling Bluetooth still doesn’t work)

If Bluetooth still fails after you enabled the relevant BIOS radio setting, work through this sequence. It’s fast and reduces guesswork.

2) Power cycle the adapter state

  1. Shut down fully.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Power back on and re-check Device Manager.

3) Check Device Manager for status

  • If Bluetooth hardware appears with a warning, open properties and check the Device status message.
  • If you see an adapter under Other devices, you likely have a missing driver.

4) Update the Bluetooth driver

Use your laptop maker’s driver page (best) or the adapter vendor’s latest package. Windows Update can be a secondary option but isn’t always reliable for radio firmware.

5) Reset BIOS to defaults (last resort for missing toggles)

If you accidentally changed a wireless/security toggle, reset BIOS defaults. Look for Load Setup Defaults or Restore Defaults, then Save & Exit.

6) Verify the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo hardware

Many laptops ship with a single card (e.g., Intel AX series Wi-Fi + Bluetooth). If BIOS disables the wireless radio entirely, Bluetooth may disappear too.

Common Mistakes That Waste Time

  • Changing the wrong BIOS menu. If you don’t find Bluetooth, keep searching for Wireless, not just Bluetooth.
  • Saving changes incorrectly. Always use Save & Exit (wording varies). Exiting without saving often makes your change disappear.
  • Using only sleep/hibernate after BIOS changes. Reboot instead.
  • Assuming Windows has a Bluetooth toggle even when firmware is disabled. Device Manager is the truth test.
  • Overwriting BIOS with the wrong model. Only flash firmware intended for your exact laptop model and hardware revision.

FAQs

Can I enable Bluetooth in BIOS on a desktop?

Sometimes yes, especially if the Bluetooth adapter is part of an integrated wireless module or tied to a wireless master switch. For add-in PCIe cards, Bluetooth is typically handled by drivers, not BIOS.

Why does my BIOS only show Wi‑Fi but not Bluetooth?

Many laptops treat Bluetooth as part of the same wireless radio subsystem. Enabling the wireless master setting (or disabling airplane mode) often enables Bluetooth indirectly.

Will enabling Bluetooth in BIOS affect security features?

Usually not directly. However, wireless settings can interact with platform security behavior (for example, airplane mode policies). If you changed other security toggles, reset BIOS defaults before troubleshooting Windows.

What if Device Manager shows no Bluetooth device at all?

First verify the wireless/radio toggle in BIOS. Then check airplane mode and driver status. If the adapter is still absent, it may be disabled in BIOS effectively through a hardware switch, or the hardware may be failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should this take?

If your BIOS exposes the correct wireless/Bluetooth toggle and you can save normally, the process is commonly under 2 minutes—excluding driver updates and confirmation steps in Windows.

Bottom Line

Enabling Bluetooth in BIOS is usually a matter of switching a firmware-level wireless radio control from Disabled to Enabled. If you don’t see a Bluetooth toggle, look for Wireless, Radio Control, or Airplane Mode instead.

Once you save and reboot, verify in Windows via the Bluetooth toggle and Device Manager. If Bluetooth still won’t appear, move on to drivers, airplane-mode controls, and (as a last resort) BIOS reset to defaults.
