In F-Droid 2.0, open Discover, tap the gear icon, scroll to Updates, then turn on Automatically install updates. This is separate from Check for updates: enabling checks alone can find updates without installing them automatically. The navigation comes from a 2.0 alpha issue report, so labels and placement may differ in other releases.
Turn on automatic installation in F-Droid
- Open the F-Droid app.
- Tap Discover.
- Tap the gear icon to open settings.
- Scroll to Updates.
- Enable Automatically install updates.
This route is documented in an issue report for the F-Droid 2.0 alpha interface, rather than a versioned manual. If you use another release, look in Settings or Updates for the equivalent automatic-install option; the menu may differ.
Automatic checks and automatic installation are different
Check for updates controls whether or when F-Droid looks for available updates. Automatically install updates controls what happens after an update is available. If your goal is to avoid approving each app update, switch on the installation setting itself. You can still choose to have updates surfaced for review rather than installed automatically.
Why F-Droid may still ask you to approve an update
Turning on the setting does not guarantee silent installation on every Android device. According to the F-Droid Client project, background auto-updates require either the Privileged Extension or a device new enough to support automatic updates through Android’s Session Installer. Without a supported installation route, F-Droid may notify you and Android may ask you to confirm the install.

The Privileged Extension is a system-integrated component, not an ordinary add-on that every user can install like a regular app. The project documentation says it can be included in a ROM or flashed as a system update; whether that is practical depends on the device and its software.
What the default setting means
A change merged into the F-Droid Client project on May 22, 2025, says, “New installs will default to auto-installing app updates,” with an option for new users to opt out in settings. The change also says that if a user misses update prompts, F-Droid will auto-install updates daily. These are project implementation details, not proof that the setting is enabled on every existing installation or that every device can install unattended.

The official package listing describes the client as able to “Optionally download and install updates automatically.” Its current release information lists F-Droid 2.0-rc1 as added on August 23, 2026. If your interface looks different, check which F-Droid release is installed before following instructions written for version 2.0.

If updates are missing or still need attention
- Check the installation toggle: confirm Automatically install updates is enabled; a check schedule by itself is not enough.
- Check notifications: make sure Android allows notifications from F-Droid if you expect it to alert you about updates.
- Look for “Suggested”: F-Droid’s FAQ explains that a newer app version may not be recommended for your device. The recommended version is marked Suggested; a newer version may be incompatible.
- Consider repository state: update availability depends on repository metadata as well as the app’s compatibility with the device. A missing notification does not by itself show that automatic installation is broken.
- Account for Android’s install flow: if F-Droid finds an update but Android requests approval, the device may not support the background installation route required for unattended updates.
