How to Enable Automatic Security Updates on Debian with unattended-upgrades

Check whether unattended-upgrades is installed and enabled, configure APT’s schedule and allowed origins, then verify activity in the logs or with a dry run.

unattended-upgrades installs eligible package updates through APT without asking for approval each time. To use it safely, check that it is installed, confirm APT’s schedule and allowed repository origins, and verify its logs. Debian installations do not all have the package enabled or configured identically.

What unattended-upgrades does

unattended-upgrades is an APT package that automatically installs eligible security and other upgrades from the package sources configured on a Debian system. It does not bypass APT: which packages qualify depends on repository metadata and the system’s allowed-origin rules. Debian’s Bookworm manual describes it as the backend for APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade, commonly invoked by apt-daily-upgrade.service or cron. It also guards against package configuration-file prompts, but that is not a guarantee that every upgrade will proceed without issues. Debian Bookworm unattended-upgrade manual.

Is unattended-upgrades enabled by default?

Not reliably enough to assume it is active on a particular machine. Debian’s PeriodicUpdates wiki says many Debian versions install the package with conservative settings, but also warns that it may be absent or disabled. Check the package, configuration, and scheduler on the host rather than relying on a general default. Debian PeriodicUpdates.

How do I enable automatic security updates on Debian?

  1. Check whether the package is installed: dpkg-query -W -f='${Status}n' unattended-upgrades. If it is not installed, install it with sudo apt update && sudo apt install unattended-upgrades.

    #1 Best Overall
  2. Run sudo dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades and select the option to enable automatic stable updates when prompted. Then inspect the resulting configuration; the prompt does not replace checking your host’s settings.

  3. Review the periodic APT settings, commonly in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/. Debian Reference gives this example for refreshing package lists and invoking unattended upgrades: APT::Periodic::Update-Package-Lists "1"; and APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade "1";. The value 1 is an example setting, not a universal schedule recommendation. See Debian Reference: package management and verify the active configuration for your release.

  4. Inspect the allowed origins in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades, the default configuration file documented by the Debian Bookworm manual. Keep eligible sources limited to those you intend to update automatically. Check the release’s shipped configuration and local overrides before changing the scope.

  5. Check the scheduler. Debian documents /lib/systemd/system/apt-daily.timer for downloads and /lib/systemd/system/apt-daily-upgrade.timer for upgrades. Timer state and behavior can vary with release and host configuration. Use systemctl list-timers and inspect the relevant timers and services on your system.

For local changes, Debian’s package README recommends a later-sorting APT configuration fragment rather than editing the package’s shipped defaults in place. That makes the local override easier to preserve when package defaults change. unattended-upgrades package README.

Which updates will it install?

The configured origin and suite/archive rules determine which repository packages are eligible. The relevant settings include Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins and Unattended-Upgrade::Origins-Pattern. Repository Release files provide origin and suite/archive metadata; Debian’s package README explains how to inspect repository policy with apt-cache policy. Debian’s wiki describes the usual default aim as security updates rather than new features, but do not infer the exact package set without checking the system’s active rules and sources.

Broader allowed origins can include more updates, but they also increase the scope of changes installed without interactive approval. Keep the rules aligned with the host’s role and the level of administrator oversight you need.

Choose an update approach that fits the system

Approach What it means Trade-off
Stable release, security-focused origins Automatically installs eligible updates from the configured security sources. Limits automatic change compared with a wider source set, while reducing the delay before eligible security fixes are applied. Review the actual origin rules.
Wider allowed-origin set Allows upgrades from additional configured origins or suites. More updates can be installed automatically, with correspondingly greater operational change. The exact scope depends on local rules.
Download or list, then install manually Use APT periodic settings to refresh lists or download packages without enabling automatic installation. Preserves an approval step, but fixes may wait for an administrator to review and install them.
Testing or unstable release Runs on a release where package changes are less suited to unattended installation. Debian Reference cautions against automatic upgrades on testing or unstable because the system can eventually break. Debian describes the package as mainly intended for security upgrades on stable systems.

Debian Reference states: “The unattended-upgrades package is mainly intended for the security upgrade for the stable system.” Debian Reference. This is guidance, not a measured failure rate or a guarantee about any particular host.

How to verify and troubleshoot updates

  1. Confirm the package is installed and that periodic settings enable unattended upgrades.

  2. Review 50unattended-upgrades and the repository policy to see which origins are eligible.

  3. Check the systemd timers or the cron path used on your host to determine whether the job is scheduled.

  4. Review /var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades.log and /var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades-dpkg.log, listed in the Bookworm manual. Also check /var/log/dpkg.log for package-manager activity.

  5. Simulate an unattended run without installing updates using sudo unattended-upgrade --dry-run. For diagnostic detail, use sudo unattended-upgrade -d; debug mode can help explain selection or execution behavior. These commands do not establish that a scheduled run completed successfully.

Debian recommends apt-listchanges for notifications about changes. Email notification may also require a configured local mail transfer agent; installing unattended-upgrades alone does not ensure that email will work. Debian PeriodicUpdates.

Additional safeguards for administrators

On a stable system, weigh the risk of automatic package changes against the security exposure of delaying fixes. Limit eligible origins, monitor the unattended-upgrades and dpkg logs, and use a manually supervised workflow where an automatic change would be unacceptable. Debian Handbook notes that apt-listbugs, if installed and configured, can prevent automatic installation of packages associated with reported serious or grave bugs; it is an optional guardrail, not a substitute for monitoring.
