You cannot enable it by subscribing to a Workshop item. The server administrator should use the normal Arma 3 dedicated-server installation and configuration process, then select missions and terrain that use Apex content. The exact launcher parameter, server setting, or SteamCMD branch for Apex should be checked against Bohemia Interactive’s current “Arma 3: Dedicated Server” documentation rather than guessed.

The server host needs a valid Steam copy of Arma 3. Every player also needs Apex to use Apex content; Tanoa is the reported compatibility boundary. Players without the DLC can generally join servers that avoid Tanoa and other Apex-only assets, but community reports are not a substitute for an official compatibility guarantee.

What “enable Apex” means on an Arma 3 server
Apex is downloadable content (DLC) for Arma 3. It is distributed through Steam as “Apex DLC,” not as a Workshop modification. Workshop subscriptions can add missions, terrains, scripts, and mods, but subscribing to an item cannot grant Apex ownership or activate the expansion.
On a dedicated server, “enable Apex” normally means making sure the server installation and its selected content are compatible with Apex missions, terrain, vehicles, weapons, and units. It does not mean adding an @Apex Workshop folder or asking players to subscribe to an Apex mod.

- Player-driven story
- More than 70 weapons
- Over 100 different vehicles
- Massive online battles
- Game world of 225 square km
The most important distinction is between server availability and player entitlement:
- The account used to set up the dedicated server must own a valid Steam copy of Arma 3.
- Players must own Apex to use Apex content in the game.
- A server can be technically online while a player still lacks permission to use a DLC-only mission, terrain, or asset.
Whether a particular dedicated-server installation requires an additional Apex-specific launcher argument or SteamCMD branch is version- and distribution-dependent. Do not copy an unverified parameter from an old forum post. Use the current Bohemia Interactive dedicated-server instructions for the command-line options and Steam installation method.
Check ownership and version before changing the server
Do these checks first. They prevent most false “Apex is disabled” diagnoses.
1. Confirm the server account owns Arma 3
Use the Steam account that will install or maintain the server. A community dedicated-server guide identifies ownership of a valid Arma 3 Steam copy as a prerequisite for setting up the server. If the account does not own the base game, fix that account issue before troubleshooting DLC.
2. Confirm Apex ownership for every intended player
Each player who must use Apex missions or content should own the Apex DLC on the Steam account used to launch Arma 3. A server cannot transfer that entitlement to clients.

3. Update the server and clients to compatible builds
Run the normal Arma 3 server update procedure documented by Bohemia Interactive, and have players update their game through Steam. A server/client build mismatch can look like a DLC problem, especially when the mission is downloaded successfully but fails during loading.

4. Identify whether the mission uses Apex-only content
Read the mission description and inspect its required terrain, factions, vehicles, weapons, and dependencies. A mission set on Tanoa is the clearest warning sign: community reports consistently describe Apex as required for Tanoa scenarios. A mission on Altis or Stratis may still contain an Apex vehicle or weapon, so terrain alone is not a complete dependency check.
Use the official dedicated-server procedure
The safest installation path is the one in Bohemia Interactive’s current Arma 3: Dedicated Server documentation. That page is the authority for the SteamCMD app, installation directory, update command, startup syntax, configuration files, and supported branches.
For Apex specifically, the exact enabling mechanism is not established here. The available material does not verify a current Apex launcher parameter, a separate SteamCMD branch, or a required server-side DLC file. Consequently, the procedure below separates actions that are safe and general from settings that must be confirmed in the official documentation.
- Install or update the dedicated server using the official Arma 3 method. Keep the server files in a separate directory from the normal desktop game installation unless the official instructions for your operating system say otherwise.
- Apply the standard server startup options. Use the documented profile, port, configuration-file, and mission-cycle options. Do not add an invented
-apexswitch or an unofficial branch name. - Follow the current Apex-specific note, if present, in the official documentation. If Bohemia Interactive documents a parameter or content branch for your server build, use that exact spelling and placement. If no such option is documented, do not force one.
- Choose a mission that matches your player licenses. Start with a mission whose terrain and required assets are available to every intended player. Test Tanoa and other Apex-dependent missions separately.
- Restart the server after any content or configuration change. A running process will not necessarily reread its mission cycle, loaded data, or profile settings.
- Test with an Apex owner and a non-owner account, if your community supports both. This reveals whether the problem is server configuration or an individual player’s license.
This workflow intentionally does not provide an unverified command line. Dedicated-server syntax changes over time, and a wrong parameter can make the server fail to start or appear to work while silently ignoring the intended content.

Configure missions and terrain correctly
Tanoa missions
Tanoa is the main reported blocker for players without Apex. If your mission is built for Tanoa, assume that players need Apex unless the mission author and current game documentation state otherwise. Publish that requirement in the server name, description, and community instructions so players do not discover it only after a failed join attempt.
Non-Tanoa missions
Community reports say players without Apex can generally join servers that do not use Tanoa content. Treat “generally” literally: a non-Tanoa mission can still depend on an Apex-only vehicle, weapon, unit, object, or script. Check the mission’s declared addons and test the complete load sequence.
Mixed-content missions
If a mission combines base-game terrain with Apex assets, decide whether the server is intended for Apex owners only. A mixed mission can be technically attractive but difficult to support because clients with different entitlements may see different errors, missing-content messages, or restricted interactions.
For a mixed-license community, maintain two mission entries or two server profiles:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- An Apex profile containing Tanoa and other Apex-dependent missions.
- A base-game profile that avoids Apex-only terrain and assets.
Do not solve a dependency problem by renaming a mission or removing files from the server. That can create a mission that loads for one client but fails synchronization or produces missing-object errors for everyone else.

What players without Apex can and cannot do
The following behavior comes from player reports rather than a formal compatibility matrix, so use it as practical guidance, not a guarantee.
| Server content | Likely result for a player without Apex | Operational advice |
|---|---|---|
| Base-game mission on Altis or Stratis with no Apex assets | Often joinable | Confirm the mission’s dependencies and test after updates. |
| Tanoa mission | Reportedly requires Apex | Label the server as Apex-required and verify every player owns the DLC. |
| Apex vehicle used by the mission | A player may be able to ride in it but not operate it | Do not rely on passengers being able to drive, fly, command, or otherwise control the asset. |
| Apex weapon or equipment | Access may be restricted; marksman weapons are reported as an exception | Test the exact item in the current game version instead of assuming all weapons behave alike. |
These reports explain why a player may join a server yet be unable to select a role, operate a vehicle, or load a particular mission. “I can see the server” does not prove that the player has the DLC required by the scenario.

How to test an Apex server without locking out your community
- Start with a known base-game mission. Verify that the server appears in the browser, accepts connections, and runs its normal mission cycle.
- Record the server build and mission name. Keep these details with the test notes so a later update can be compared accurately.
- Run an Apex-owner test. Join with an account that owns Apex and load the intended Tanoa or mixed-content mission.
- Run a non-owner test. Use an account without Apex only on a mission that is intended to support non-owners. Do not use this test to bypass DLC ownership.
- Check the whole interaction path. Joining the lobby, selecting a slot, loading the terrain, spawning, entering a vehicle, operating it, and using mission equipment are separate tests.
- Read both server and client logs. Capture the first missing-addon, entitlement, signature, or version error rather than relying on the final generic disconnect message.
- Restore the normal mission cycle and restart. Temporary test missions should not remain in production rotation unless they have been checked for the intended audience.
Use a simple test matrix so an apparent DLC failure is not confused with a network or mod problem:
| Test | Account | Mission | What it isolates |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Apex owner | Base-game terrain | Basic server connectivity and startup. |
| B | Apex owner | Tanoa or another Apex mission | Server content and Apex-owner compatibility. |
| C | No Apex | Base-game mission with no Apex assets | Compatibility for non-owners. |
| D | No Apex | Tanoa or Apex-only mission | Expected entitlement restriction; use only to document the result. |
Troubleshoot common Apex server failures
The server is not visible
- Confirm the process is running and listening on the configured port.
- Check firewall, router, and hosting-panel rules using the standard Arma 3 server checklist.
- Verify that the server is advertising the intended profile and mission cycle.
- Do not assume invisibility means Apex is disabled; test a base-game mission first.
The server appears, but Tanoa will not load
- Confirm the connecting account owns Apex.
- Confirm the mission actually targets Tanoa and has no additional missing dependencies.
- Update the client and server to compatible builds.
- Check the first addon or entitlement error in the logs.
- Try a base-game mission. If that works, the failure is likely mission content or DLC entitlement rather than basic networking.
A player can join but cannot use a vehicle
This matches community reports about DLC vehicles: a non-owner may be able to ride in an Apex vehicle but not operate it. Check the player’s Apex ownership before changing server files. For a community that includes non-owners, remove DLC-only roles from the base-game mission or run a separate Apex mission rotation.
A weapon is unavailable
Verify the item’s DLC dependency and the player’s entitlement. Player reports describe marksman weapons as an exception to the usual restrictions, so do not infer the behavior of one weapon from another.

An “Apex” mod or framework is confusing the setup
“Apex Framework” is a separate community mission-framework project. Its name does not enable the Apex DLC. Treat it as an independent project with its own documentation and dependencies; installing it is not a substitute for owning or enabling Apex.
The server starts after adding a guessed parameter, but nothing changes
Remove the unverified option and return to the documented startup command. A parameter copied from an obsolete guide may be ignored, unsupported, or intended for a different server build. Re-test with a base-game mission, then consult the current Bohemia Interactive dedicated-server page for the supported syntax.
How to describe Apex requirements to players
Make the requirement visible before players download a mission or join voice chat. A useful server listing should state:
- Whether Apex is required for the whole server or only for selected missions.
- Whether Tanoa is in the mission rotation.
- Which mission names require Apex.
- Whether the server offers a base-game rotation for players without the DLC.
- Which optional Workshop mods are separate from Apex.
Example wording: “Apex required for Tanoa missions. Base-game missions are available on the alternate rotation. Apex is a paid Arma 3 DLC, not a Workshop subscription.” This prevents players from downloading unrelated Workshop content and expecting it to unlock the expansion.
When a separate server profile is the better solution
Use separate profiles or instances when your audience has mixed DLC ownership and the mission set cannot be kept dependency-free. A dedicated Apex profile can run Tanoa and Apex-heavy scenarios, while a base-game profile can guarantee access for players who do not own the expansion.
Separate profiles also simplify administration: each profile has its own mission cycle, description, logs, and test results. Do not duplicate configuration files blindly; copy only the settings documented for your server build, then verify ports, identities, and mission rotation independently.
What is confirmed and what remains version-dependent
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Is Apex a Workshop mod? | No. It is a paid Arma 3 DLC distributed through Steam. |
| Does the server account need Arma 3? | Yes. The setup account needs a valid Steam copy of Arma 3. |
| Does every player need Apex? | Players need Apex to use Apex content. Community reports indicate non-owners can often join non-Tanoa servers, but this is not an official universal guarantee. |
| Is Apex required for Tanoa? | Community reports identify Tanoa scenarios as requiring Apex. Treat Tanoa as Apex-required unless current official documentation or the mission author says otherwise. |
| What exact command enables Apex? | Do not guess. Confirm the current launcher and SteamCMD instructions in Bohemia Interactive’s “Arma 3: Dedicated Server” documentation. |
| Does Apex Framework enable the DLC? | No. It is a separate community framework project. |
Final checklist
- The server account owns Arma 3 on Steam.
- The dedicated server is installed and updated with the current official procedure.
- No Workshop subscription is being treated as Apex activation.
- The exact Apex-related server syntax has been checked against current Bohemia Interactive documentation.
- Every Tanoa or Apex-only mission is clearly labeled.
- Players who need Apex content own the DLC on their playing accounts.
- Base-game missions are available if your community includes non-owners.
- Server and client logs have been checked after each failed test.
The Bottom Line
Apex cannot be enabled through Steam Workshop. Install and maintain the Arma 3 dedicated server through the official server procedure, use Apex-dependent missions only for players who own the DLC, and treat Tanoa as Apex-required based on current community reports. Because the exact Apex-specific launcher or SteamCMD mechanism is version-dependent and not confirmed here, verify that setting in Bohemia Interactive’s current dedicated-server documentation before deploying it.
