Open Settings and tap Apps. Depending on your device, this may be called Apps & notifications or use another manufacturer-specific label. Google notes that Android settings steps can vary because manufacturers change the software: Google’s Android app settings guidance.

If Android System WebView is not visible, look for an option in the Apps screen’s menu or filter to show system apps. The control’s name and location are device-specific, and it may not be available on every device.

Tap Android System WebView. If its app page shows Enable, tap it. For a disabled pre-installed app, Google’s guidance explains that Enable appears where Disable would otherwise be offered.

Close and reopen the app that was having trouble displaying web content. If it still fails, continue with the checks below rather than assuming WebView was the only cause.
Google cautions that disabling a system app can cause other apps to misbehave. Avoid disabling Android System WebView unless you have a device-specific reason.

If WebView is missing or Enable is unavailable
A missing standalone WebView entry does not by itself mean the device is broken. Android configurations differ, and some devices may not expose a separate WebView control.

Open Google Play Store and search for Android System WebView. If an update is offered, install it.

Search for Google Chrome and install any available update there, too.

Reopen the affected app and check whether the problem remains.

Google recommended updating both Android System WebView and Chrome during a crash incident in March 2021. Its incident guidance said some devices did not have WebView pre-installed and needed only a Chrome update: Google’s March 2021 WebView incident guidance. That was advice for that incident, not a universal fix for current problems or every Android device.

WebView appears in Google Play and shows Update: install the update, then reopen the affected app.

WebView is not separately listed and Chrome is installed: check Chrome for an update. The available controls depend on the device configuration; do not treat the missing entry alone as proof of a fault.

The setting remains unavailable or the app still fails: contact the device maker or consult its instructions. Have the device maker, model, Android version, and affected app name ready.

WebView is not your default browser
Android System WebView is the system component apps can use to display web content. The default browser setting instead chooses which browser opens ordinary links. To change that choice, Google documents the path as Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app, then select a browser: Google’s instructions for default apps.
Android’s developer documentation says the WebView package can change when it is updated, disabled, or uninstalled, and that a package change can stop app processes that had loaded WebView. Those apps use the new package the next time they start. This is why reopening the affected app after a provider change is useful; it is not a reason to change providers in Developer Options without a device-specific need: Android WebView API reference.
