Swipe typing is built into the iPhone keyboard as QuickPath and is available in Google’s Gboard keyboard as Glide typing. On an iPhone, open any text field and slide across the letters of a word without lifting your finger; there is no separate QuickPath switch in Apple’s documented setup. On Android, open Gboard’s settings, turn on Glide typing if necessary, and use the same touch-and-slide gesture.
Both systems depend on the selected keyboard language, and neither vendor supports every language. Android menu names also vary between manufacturers and software versions, so the exact route may differ from the standard Google path.

What swipe typing is called on each phone
Swipe typing lets you enter a word by moving one finger from letter to letter instead of tapping each key separately. You start on the first letter, trace the rest of the word, and lift your finger at the end. The keyboard interprets the path and inserts its best match.

Use QuickPath on the built-in iPhone keyboard
QuickPath works in any iPhone app that provides a text field, such as Messages, Mail, Notes, a web form or a search box. You do not need to install an app or change a keyboard setting just to try it.
Step-by-step
- Open an app with a place to type and tap the text field. The iPhone onscreen keyboard appears.
- Touch the key for the first letter of the word.
- Without lifting your finger, slide across the remaining letters in the order they appear in the word. Your path can pass over the letters rather than requiring a precise tap on each key.
- Lift your finger after the final letter. The keyboard completes the gesture and enters the word.
- Continue with the next word. You can switch between sliding and ordinary taps whenever a word is easier to enter manually.
Apple documents this gesture in its iPhone User Guide. The guide describes QuickPath as a way to enter words in an app with a text field and notes that it is unavailable for some languages.
There is no separate QuickPath switch in Apple’s documented steps
Do not look for a setting labeled “QuickPath” or “swipe typing” as a required activation step. Apple’s standard instructions go straight from displaying the onscreen keyboard to sliding across letters. The general keyboard settings page is Settings > General > Keyboard; it contains keyboard options, but Apple does not list a distinct QuickPath enable switch in the QuickPath procedure.

How to enter a difficult word
If a name, abbreviation or uncommon word is not recognized, tap the letters normally for that word and resume sliding for the rest of the sentence. QuickPath is a gesture method, not a requirement to use one technique for every word.

Enable and use Glide typing on Android with Gboard
The Android instructions in this guide use Gboard. Gboard is already the default keyboard on some Android phones, while other devices use a manufacturer keyboard until you install or select Gboard. Google’s setup guidance includes Android 8.0 and later for some of these steps.
Open Gboard’s settings
- Tap a text field in any app so the active keyboard appears.
- If Gboard is not installed or is not the current keyboard, install it or select it through your phone’s keyboard settings. The exact screen depends on the device.
- Open Gboard’s settings. Google’s documented Android route is Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard.
- Choose Glide typing.
- Turn on the Glide typing option if it is disabled.
Google documents the feature and its settings in Gboard Help. If your phone uses different labels or places keyboard settings elsewhere, Google advises checking the device manufacturer’s instructions. A custom Android interface may use terms such as “On-screen keyboard,” “Keyboard list,” or “Manage keyboards” instead of “Virtual keyboard.”
Trace a word
- With Gboard visible, touch the first letter of the word.
- Slide over each following letter without lifting your finger.
- Lift your finger when you reach the final letter. Gboard interprets the path and enters its suggested word.
- Review the suggestion strip before continuing if the word is unusual or the trace was complicated.
Google says Glide typing does not work for every language. The active Gboard language therefore matters as much as the setting itself.
Correct or remove a result
- Replace a misread word: choose the intended word from Gboard’s suggestions.
- Delete a word: double-tap the word, then tap Delete, following Google’s documented procedure.
- Use tapping instead: enter that particular word with individual key taps and return to Glide typing afterward.
Use Gboard’s Glide typing on an iPhone or iPad
An iPhone can use Apple’s built-in QuickPath or Google’s Gboard. Choose Gboard only if you specifically want its keyboard and Glide typing workflow; it is not required for swipe typing on iOS.

Install and configure Gboard
- Install Gboard on the iPhone or iPad.
- Open the Gboard app.
- Select Keyboard settings > Glide typing and enable the feature.
- Open iOS Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Add Gboard to the list of keyboards and adjust its position if you want it to be the preferred option.
- In an app with a text field, use the keyboard switcher to select Gboard.
- Touch the first letter, slide across the rest of the word, and lift at the end.
Google’s Gboard setup instructions for iPhone and iPad list iOS 9 and later as supported. The same page covers adding the keyboard to iOS, while the app’s Keyboard settings page is where Google places the Glide typing option.

Why swipe typing may not work on an iPhone
The selected language may not support QuickPath
Apple explicitly says QuickPath is not available for all languages. Check which keyboard language is active before treating a missing gesture as a fault. You can review keyboard and language options at Settings > General > Keyboard. If the feature works when another supported keyboard language is selected, the limitation is language coverage rather than a damaged touchscreen or a hidden switch.
You are using a different keyboard
QuickPath applies to Apple’s built-in keyboard. If you installed another keyboard and selected it with the keyboard switcher, its gesture feature and settings are separate. Switch back to the Apple keyboard to test QuickPath, or configure the other keyboard according to its own instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe keyboard is not visible in the text field
QuickPath can only be used after an app presents an editable text field and the onscreen keyboard is shown. Tap the field again, dismiss and reopen the keyboard, or test in another ordinary text-entry app to determine whether the issue belongs to that app rather than the keyboard.

Why Glide typing may not work on Android
Gboard is not the active keyboard
Opening Gboard’s settings does not automatically make it the keyboard used by every app. Tap a text field and verify that Gboard is the keyboard on screen. If another keyboard appears, use the device’s keyboard switcher or keyboard-management settings to select Gboard.
Glide typing is switched off
Return to Gboard’s settings and open Glide typing. The documented route is Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard, but manufacturer software may rename or relocate those menus. Enable the option, return to a text field, and test a short, familiar word.
Your Android menu does not match Google’s path
Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 8.0 and later and that custom Android versions can differ. Look in the phone’s Settings search for “Gboard,” “virtual keyboard,” “on-screen keyboard,” or “languages and input.” If those searches do not reveal the controls, consult the phone manufacturer’s current help pages rather than assuming the feature is absent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The language is unsupported
Glide typing is not available for every Gboard language. Check the active language in Gboard and test with a language known to offer the feature. A language mismatch can look like an accuracy problem because the gesture may be interpreted as ordinary input or produce an unexpected word.

The trace is being read as the wrong word
Use the suggestion strip to select the intended result. For a word that is easier to enter manually, tap its letters. If the wrong word has already been inserted, double-tap it and tap Delete, then try again.
Language, version and device requirements
- iPhone QuickPath: Apple says support is language-dependent. The documented feature is part of the onscreen keyboard workflow, not a separately listed installation.
- Android Gboard: Google’s settings documentation uses the Android route through System, Languages & input, Virtual keyboard and Gboard. Some Android steps are documented for Android 8.0 and later.
- Manufacturer variations: Android manufacturers can change menu names and locations. The same Gboard setting may be reached through a different “keyboard” or “input” section.
- iPhone Gboard: Google lists iOS 9 and later as supported for Gboard on iPhone and iPad. You still need to add Gboard under iOS keyboard settings and select it while typing.
- Language support: Neither Apple nor Google promises swipe typing for every language. Always treat language availability as a separate check from whether the feature is enabled.
Practical workflow for reliable swipe typing
- Confirm the keyboard first. On iPhone, identify whether you are using Apple’s keyboard or Gboard. On Android, verify that Gboard is active before troubleshooting Glide typing.
- Confirm the language. A supported gesture in one keyboard language does not establish support in another.
- Start with short, familiar words. Place your finger on the first letter and keep it down until the final letter.
- Check the proposed word. On Gboard, use the suggestion strip when the trace is misread. On either platform, tap the word manually when a name or uncommon term is easier that way.
- Mix methods freely. Swipe typing is an input option, not a lock-in. Alternate between tracing and tapping within the same message or document.
Common questions answered
Can I swipe type on an iPhone without installing anything?
Yes. Apple’s built-in keyboard supports QuickPath in supported languages. Open a text field, slide across the letters of a word, and lift your finger at the end.
Do I have to enable QuickPath in iPhone Settings?
Apple’s documented QuickPath procedure does not include a separate enable switch. Use Settings > General > Keyboard for general keyboard options and check the selected language if QuickPath is unavailable.
How do I enable Glide typing in Gboard?
On Android, open Gboard through Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard, select Glide typing, and enable it. On iPhone, open the Gboard app, choose Keyboard settings > Glide typing, then add and select Gboard in iOS keyboard settings.
Why does the Android path look different?
Android manufacturers customize Settings, and Google says custom Android versions can use different menu names. Search Settings for Gboard or keyboard, then consult the device manufacturer’s help if the documented route is not present.
Can I switch between tapping and swiping?
Yes. Both QuickPath and Glide typing allow you to use ordinary key taps whenever a word is difficult to trace.
