Sony’s AI upscaling feature for the base PlayStation 5 is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). To use it, update a supported game and select QSSR in that game’s graphics options. Sony announced the first two supported games—Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei—on October 1, 2026. QSSR is not a universal PS5 setting.
What QSSR does—and how it differs from PSSR
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI upscaling technology for the base PS5. Sony describes it as a streamlined, performance-oriented tier derived from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. The company says QSSR is designed to improve image detail and stability on PS5; those are Sony’s claims, not independent comparative test results. Sony’s announcement describes the technology and its initial game support.

QSSR is not the same feature as PlayStation 5 Pro’s PSSR. Sony’s announcement presents PSSR as the PS5 Pro technology and QSSR as a separate option for the base PS5. It says QSSR is added inside supported games, rather than enabled through a single system-wide switch.

Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games receiving QSSR graphics options in patches announced October 1, 2026. Sony says the technology will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but has not named additional games or a rollout schedule in that announcement. Support for any other title should be confirmed in that game’s current version.

How to turn on QSSR on PS5
- Update the game. On the PS5 home screen, highlight Marvel’s Wolverine or Ghost of Yōtei, press the controller’s Options button, and choose Check for Update. Install an available update. PlayStation’s update instructions document this process.
- Check for a console software update if needed. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony says the current system software version and any available update are shown there. See PlayStation’s system software instructions.
- Open the updated game’s graphics options. Look for QSSR and select it if you want to use it. Sony confirms QSSR is an additional graphics option in the supported games, but does not specify the exact submenu path or the option’s precise on-screen wording. The location may therefore depend on the game’s current interface.
If no QSSR option appears, first confirm that the game has installed its latest available update and that it is one of the named supported titles. Sony’s announcement does not establish QSSR support for every PS5 game.

QSSR is presented as a graphics choice within each supported game. Sony has not published resolution, frame-rate, latency, or quantified image-quality comparisons for either initial title in the announcement. The right choice depends on the game’s other graphics options and the presentation you prefer; there are no official figures in the announcement for ranking QSSR modes between the two games.

Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said the feature brings “even more clarity and detail” to the world of Ghost of Yōtei. These are developer comments about their own games, not independent benchmark findings.
