What a Hytale whitelist does
A whitelist changes the server from open access to an allow-list: only players registered in the server’s whitelist can connect. It is useful for private survival worlds, testing servers, family or school groups, and staged community launches where you want the address to remain reachable without accepting every player.
Whitelisting is an access control layer, not authentication, moderation, or a substitute for backups. Anyone who can use an authorized account can still join, and a whitelisted player can still damage a world or break server rules. Keep operator permissions limited and maintain normal backups.

For a single player, use the console or an authorized in-game command. Reserve file editing for a deliberate maintenance window.

- Open the live server console. Use your host’s console window, terminal session, or local server process. Do not put console commands in a web-chat box unless the host explicitly routes that box to the server.
- Enable protection. Enter
whitelist enableand submit it. - Confirm the state. Run
whitelist status. A result indicating that the whitelist is enabled means new connections must be authorized. - Add at least one player before inviting anyone. Use
whitelist add <username>with the player’s Hytale username. Runwhitelist listto confirm the entry. - Have the player reconnect. A player who was already connected may not be tested by the new access rule until they reconnect; if behavior is unclear, disconnect and reconnect that account.
The command set and its reported subcommands are also summarized in this Hytale command reference. That site is a community source, not identified official Hypixel Studios documentation, so command availability can differ by server version.

Enable a whitelist in a hosting panel
Some managed hosts expose the same setting as a switch. The documented examples are:
- Aternos’ Hytale whitelist instructions, which use the options page instead of a console command.
- exaroton’s Hytale instructions, which likewise describe a panel-based toggle.
Open the server’s options or configuration page, locate the whitelist control, turn it on, and save or apply the change. The exact label, location, and whether a restart is requested are host-specific. After saving, use the panel console (if available) to run whitelist status and whitelist list. A panel switch does not automatically tell you which names are authorized; add those entries separately unless the host’s interface includes an explicit player-management field.
Add and remove players
Add by username
Run:
whitelist add <username>Replace the angle-bracket placeholder with the exact account name, without the brackets. The guides report that the command accepts an online username. If capitalization, spelling, or punctuation is wrong, the intended account may not be authorized.

Remove by username
Run:
whitelist remove <username>Removal prevents future access for that identity but does not ban the account or erase its world data. If the player is currently connected, disconnect them separately if you need access to end immediately.
Use an offline UUID
The same add and remove operations can use an offline UUID instead of a username, according to the command references. UUIDs are useful for bulk administration or when the player is not online. Copy the UUID exactly; a missing character or an extra space creates a different identity.
whitelist add <offline-UUID>
whitelist remove <offline-UUID>Do not assume a username and UUID entry are interchangeable. Keep a record of which identifier you used so that later removal targets the same entry.

Inspect and clear entries
Use these read and maintenance commands:

Run whitelist list after every add or remove operation when you are administering a private event. It gives you a simple audit trail in the console.
Manage access from inside the game
An in-game route is convenient when you are already playing, but it requires an account with permission to execute server commands. Open the server’s command interface, enter the same syntax used by the console, and check the result:
- Run
whitelist add <username>. - Run
whitelist listand verify the name. - Ask the player to reconnect and test access.
If the command is rejected as unknown or unauthorized, use the server console instead. Do not grant operator access broadly just to avoid opening the console; operator permissions can affect the whole world.

For a large roster or an external access-management workflow, the whitelist is reported as a plain JSON array containing authorized players’ UUIDs. The exact directory was not confirmed by the available references, so use your host’s file manager or inspect the server directory rather than assuming a universal path. The Hytale file and folder structure guide can help you identify the server’s data layout, but treat its details as community documentation.

- Stop the server cleanly. Do not edit the file while the process is running.
- Make a dated backup. Download or copy the existing
whitelist.jsonbefore changing anything. - Open the file as text. Preserve valid JSON syntax: brackets, quotation marks, commas, and UUID strings.
- Make the smallest change possible. Add or remove only the UUID entries you intend to change. Do not paste a username where the file expects a UUID.
- Save as plain JSON. Avoid rich-text editors that can add formatting or a hidden extension.
- Start the server. Watch the startup log for JSON or permission errors.
- Verify in the console. Run
whitelist statusandwhitelist list, then test with an authorized account.
Manual edits made while the server is running may be overwritten when the server saves its current state. A restart after a file edit is therefore the safe procedure. The available material does not establish a universal file path or guarantee identical reload behavior for every Hytale build.
Example JSON shape
The file is described as an array of UUIDs, not a command script. The following illustrates the shape only; use real UUIDs from your server and do not copy the example value:

]If your server’s file contains a different structure, preserve that structure and rely on the command interface instead of forcing it into this example.
Disable the whitelist temporarily or permanently
To make the server public again, run:
whitelist disableCheck with whitelist status. Disabling the feature normally leaves the saved entries in place, so re-enabling it can restore the previous list; verify that behavior on your build before relying on it for an event. If you need a completely new roster, review the list and change entries explicitly rather than using whitelist clear as a shortcut.
Troubleshoot a Hytale whitelist that does not work
“Unknown command” or syntax error
- Confirm that you are connected to the Hytale server console, not a host shell or operating-system terminal.
- Enter the command without a leading slash in the server console. In an in-game command box, use the interface’s normal command format.
- Check spelling: the documented root is
whitelist, followed byenable,disable,add,remove,list,status, orclear. - Compare the server build’s command help with the third-party syntax references. There is no identified official command manual in the material available for this guide.
The player is still refused after being added
- Run
whitelist listand confirm the exact account appears. - Check for a spelling or capitalization mismatch and try the player’s UUID if username matching is uncertain.
- Have the player disconnect and reconnect.
- If you edited the JSON file, stop the server, restore the backup if necessary, and repeat the edit with valid JSON.
- Check the startup and console log for a malformed file or a failed save.
The server is still public
- Run
whitelist status; adding names does not enable the feature by itself. - If you used a host panel, confirm that the setting was saved on the correct server instance.
- Look for a second proxy, fallback server, or test instance that players may be joining instead.
Everyone was locked out after a file edit
Stop the server, restore the dated backup, start it, and verify the list. If no backup exists, reconstruct the array with the correct UUIDs, validate the JSON syntax, and test one account before inviting the rest. Avoid editing the live file again until the cause is understood.
