How to Enable and Disable Android’s Install Unknown Apps Permission

On Pixel, Android’s Install unknown apps permission is granted to a source app through Allow from this source and can be revoked per app in Special app access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Google Pixel, start the download in the app that will handle the installation. When Android prompts you, tap Settings, then turn on Allow from this source. To revoke access later, go to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, select that source app, and turn off Allow from this source. This is Google’s documented Pixel route; menus can differ on other Android devices.

The setting is an exception to the usual Google Play route, not a safety check. It gives a particular app permission to request installs from outside Play, so use it only when you trust the source and turn it off when you are finished. A separate developer-verification block, when present, has its own process.

Enable installation access for a source app

Android grants this permission to the app that is trying to install the downloaded app—not to the app being downloaded. For example, if one app handles the download and installation, that is the app you select when granting or revoking access. The distinction matters: the permission is about which app may request an installation, while the app you are about to install is the item under review.

  1. Begin downloading the app from the source app that will handle the installation.
  2. When Android displays the permission prompt, tap Settings.
  3. Turn on Allow from this source for that app.
  4. Return to the installation flow and review Android’s install prompt before continuing.

Google documents these steps for Pixel phones in its Pixel app-download instructions. If your phone uses a manufacturer-customized version of Android, the labels or menu route may differ; use the device maker’s instructions if the Pixel path does not match your Settings app.

What to check during the install flow

Granting access and installing the app are separate actions. Turning on Allow from this source lets the selected source app request an installation; it does not itself install the download or certify it. Once you return to the install flow, pause at Android’s install prompt and consider whether you expected this app, whether the publisher is identifiable, and whether you can confirm that the source is the publisher’s genuine distribution channel.

If you did not intend to install an app or cannot identify who published it, do not continue simply because Android offers an install button. Google recommends Google Play and verified developers. The prompt is an opportunity to make a decision, not an endorsement of the app by Android.

Disable the permission when you are done

On Pixel, access is controlled separately for each source app. Revoking it for one app does not mean there is a single universal switch that disables install access for every source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
  3. Select the source app whose access you want to remove.
  4. Turn off Allow from this source.

If you cannot find Install unknown apps or the labels differ, your Android version or manufacturer may use a different route. Google’s Pixel instructions are not a universal menu map; consult your device maker’s help for the specific model and software version.

Reviewing access app by app

Because the permission is attached to a source app, a useful final check is to review the entries in the Install unknown apps screen and decide which ones still need access. Select each source app you want to restrict and switch off its own Allow from this source control. Do not assume that turning off one entry changes every other entry.

For a one-time installation, revoking access afterward limits that source app’s ability to request later installs. This does not remove an app you already installed, nor does it make that installed app safe or unsafe by itself. The permission controls future installation requests from the selected source; app trust still depends on its origin and publisher.

What “Install unknown apps” permits—and what it does not

Google describes installing an app from a source other than Google Play as “sideloading.” Enabling Allow from this source lets the selected app request installation of apps from outside the Play Store. It does not certify the downloaded app, confirm its publisher, or prove that it is safe.

Google recommends getting apps through Google Play. It warns that apps from unknown sources can put both the device and personal information at risk, including potential damage, data loss, or harm to personal information. Its Android app-download guidance advises caution when downloading from unknown sources. Google’s wording is direct: “Important: If you download apps from unknown sources, your device and personal information can be at risk.”

Compare the source, not just the file

When deciding whether an installation source is appropriate, compare three things: whether it is an official store or the developer’s verified channel, whether you can independently confirm the publisher, and whether you can revoke that source app’s install permission afterward. These are practical checks, not a guarantee that an app is harmless.

  • Google Play: This is Google’s recommended route. Google says Play Store apps are checked by Play Protect before download. The check is an additional safeguard, not proof that an app can never pose a risk.
  • Another official store or a developer’s verified channel: Google recommends verified developers. Confirm that the store or channel is genuinely associated with the publisher rather than relying on a similar-looking name or an unverified link.
  • An unfamiliar source: If you cannot independently confirm who publishes the app or whether the distribution channel is genuine, there is not enough basis to treat that source as trusted. Do not rely on an unverified roundup of APK sites as a safety certification.

There is no additional device, accessory, paid app, or special tool required by Google’s steps for changing this permission. The decision is about the source and the app, not about buying another product to make sideloading safe.

Check the source and publisher before installing

  • Prefer Google Play or another official store, and use a developer’s verified channel when appropriate. Google recommends Play and verified developers.
  • Check that you can independently confirm who published the app and that the source is the publisher’s genuine channel.
  • Do not treat the fact that Android permits an installation as a safety endorsement. The permission controls whether the source app may request an install; it does not validate the app’s origin.
  • When you no longer need a source app to install outside-Play apps, turn off its permission using the app-specific Pixel route above.

These checks are more useful than relying on a generic list of APK-download sites: a source should not be treated as vetted unless its publisher and distribution channel have actually been verified.

How Play Protect fits in

Google Play Protect is an additional security layer, not a substitute for checking where an app came from. Google says it checks Play Store apps before download and also checks apps from other sources. It can warn about apps it detects as potentially harmful and can remove known harmful apps. Google describes a lightweight automatic daily scan and says users can also start a full scan; those checks do not guarantee that every app is harmless. Details are in Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs.

In practice, read any warning Android or Play Protect shows rather than assuming that enabling install access overrides the warning or makes the app trustworthy. A scan is a security measure, not a substitute for choosing a source you can verify. Conversely, the fact that a source is allowed to request an install does not mean Play Protect has declared the app safe.

If Android blocks an app as coming from an unverified developer

A block for an unverified developer is a separate control from Allow from this source. The first setting grants a particular source app permission to request installations; the developer-verification flow addresses whether an app’s developer is verified. If you see a specific unverified-developer block, changing the per-source permission alone may not resolve it.

Google’s current help pages describe developer verification for certified Android devices running Android 8 and later. The documented rollout begins in September 2026 for participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with global expansion planned for 2027. The initial participating-store list includes Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Palm Store, Samsung Galaxy Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. Google says Android Open Source Project and non-certified devices are exempt, as are certain regions where Google Mobile Services are unsupported. These are rollout conditions and plans in Google’s developer-verification guidance; applicability depends on device certification, location, and the rollout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That timeline describes developer verification, not a change to the ordinary Pixel Allow from this source steps. A user can encounter the source permission without facing an unverified-developer block, and the newer developer flow is relevant only when Android presents that particular block. The listed stores and regions are the initial rollout details; Google describes global expansion as planned for 2027, so do not interpret the initial list as a permanent or complete map of availability.

The advanced flow Google documents

Only follow this route if you are facing the unverified-developer block and understand the risk. Google recommends installing apps from verified developers. Its instructions describe a separate advanced process:

  1. Enable Developer options on the device.
  2. Open Settings > System > Developer options.
  3. Enable Allow apps from unverified developers.
  4. Complete the required 24-hour security delay.
  5. After the delay, choose whether to keep the advanced flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely.
  6. If you proceed with an installation, expect an install warning; Google’s instructions say to tap Install anyway to continue.

The 24-hour wait is part of Google’s advanced unverified-developer process; it is not a delay imposed when enabling ordinary source access. After waiting, the choice is whether that advanced flow remains available for seven days or indefinitely. Even then, an install warning still appears. The option to proceed does not convert an unverified developer into a verified one or guarantee that the app is safe.

This advanced setting is not the same as granting a source app Allow from this source. The one-time delay and the option to keep the flow enabled apply to Google’s documented unverified-developer process, not to the ordinary Pixel permission steps. See Google’s instructions for allowing app installs from unverified developers for the current flow.

Common points of confusion

The prompt does not appear

The documented Pixel process begins by starting the download in the source app that will handle installation; Android then presents the permission prompt. If you started the download elsewhere or the installation flow differs, confirm which app is requesting install access. Menu details can vary by Android version and manufacturer.

Do not guess at a universal path if your Settings screen differs. Google’s documented menu route is for Pixel; manufacturer-customized Android versions may label or organize the same kind of setting differently. Check the device maker’s instructions for your model and software version rather than changing an unrelated security setting.

You turned off access, but another source can still install apps

On Pixel, review the source-app list under Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Select each source app you want to restrict and turn off its own Allow from this source setting. The permission is app-specific, rather than necessarily one global switch.

When you review the list, distinguish the app requesting an install from the app you installed. Choose the source app whose permission you want to revoke. If you used more than one source app, check each relevant entry instead of assuming that changing one entry has revoked all outside-Play access.

The app is still blocked after you grant source access

Source access and developer verification are distinct. If Android’s warning specifically identifies an unverified developer, consult the separate advanced-flow section and Google’s current instructions; do not assume that toggling Allow from this source removes that block.

You are unsure whether to allow the source

Google’s default recommendation is to use Play and to install from verified developers. If you cannot confirm the publisher or source, the safer choice is not to proceed. The setting exists to permit a request; it does not establish that the request is trustworthy. If you do proceed for a source you trust, review the installation prompt and revoke that source app’s permission when it is no longer needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does “Install unknown apps” permission apply to every app on my phone?

No. In Google’s Pixel instructions, you select the particular source app whose install access you want to grant or revoke. It is not necessarily one universal switch. Review each relevant source app in Install unknown apps if you want to restrict more than one.

Is “Allow from this source” the same as allowing an unverified developer?

No. Allow from this source lets a selected app request an installation from outside Google Play. Google’s unverified-developer block is a separate control with a separate advanced flow, including a 24-hour delay in its current instructions. If the warning names an unverified developer, changing source access alone may not resolve it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Play Protect make sideloaded apps safe?

No. Google says Play Protect checks apps from outside the Play Store and can warn about potentially harmful apps or remove known harmful ones. It also performs a lightweight automatic daily scan, and users can start a full scan. These checks add protection but do not guarantee that every app is harmless or replace checking the source and publisher.

Can I disable access after installing an app?

Yes. You can return to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, choose the source app, and turn off Allow from this source. This revokes that source app’s install permission; it does not mean that an app already installed is automatically removed.

Why are the settings on my phone different?

The cited route is Google’s Pixel guidance. Google notes that custom Android versions may use different steps, so menus and labels on another manufacturer’s phone may not match. Use the device maker’s instructions for the specific model and Android version rather than assuming the Pixel path is universal.

Do I need to wait 24 hours to enable ordinary install access?

No 24-hour wait is part of the ordinary Pixel steps for Allow from this source. Google describes that delay for the separate advanced process used when a device blocks an app from an unverified developer. If you see that specific block, follow Google’s current instructions and consider its recommendation to install from verified developers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sources and current guidance

The Pixel steps are documented by Google Pixel Phone Help in “Download apps to your Pixel phone.” General risk guidance appears in Google Android Help’s “Download apps to your Android device.” Google’s developer-verification and unverified-developer instructions are covered in its developer-verification help and unverified-developer install guide. Play Protect details are in Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs.

Developer-verification timing and availability can change as rollout proceeds. The dates described here are Google’s stated September 2026 initial rollout and planned 2027 global expansion; check Google’s current help pages if the unverified-developer flow is the reason you are reading this guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “Install unknown apps” permission apply to every app on my phone?

No. On Pixel, access is controlled per source app. Select each app you want to restrict in the Install unknown apps screen and turn off Allow from this source for that app.

Is “Allow from this source” the same as allowing an unverified developer?

No. Allow from this source lets a selected source app request an installation from outside Google Play. An unverified-developer block is a separate control with a distinct advanced flow and, under Google’s current instructions, a 24-hour delay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Play Protect make sideloaded apps safe?

No. Google says Play Protect checks apps from outside Play and can warn about potentially harmful apps or remove known harmful ones, but it does not guarantee that every app is harmless. Check the source and publisher as well.

Can I disable access after installing an app?

Yes. On Pixel, go to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, select the source app, and turn off Allow from this source. This revokes that source’s install permission; it does not remove an app already installed.

Why are the settings on my phone different?

The cited menu path is Google’s Pixel guidance. Manufacturer-customized Android versions may use different labels or steps, so consult the device maker’s instructions for your model and software version.

Do I need to wait 24 hours to enable ordinary install access?

No. The 24-hour delay belongs to Google’s separate advanced flow for a specific unverified-developer block, not the ordinary Pixel Allow from this source permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

On Pixel, enable Allow from this source from the install prompt for the app handling the download, then revoke it per source app in Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps when you are done. Prefer Google Play or a verified developer, treat Play Protect as an added layer rather than a guarantee, and remember that an unverified-developer block is a separate process.
