You can set up Nintendo Switch emulation on a Steam Deck with EmuDeck’s documented Ryujinx workflow, then add games to Steam Game Mode. You must provide your own game files, keys, and firmware; installing an emulator does not include them. Whether a particular game runs well depends on the title, emulator version, and your expectations—not just whether it starts.
What you need before you start
EmuDeck’s SteamOS guide uses Ryujinx for Switch emulation. Its workflow expects a prod.keys file to decrypt game ROMs, Ryujinx firmware, and dumped game files or homebrew. The Ryujinx setup guide says it assumes users have hacked a Switch and dumped their keys and firmware; it does not provide those files. - Emulator: EmuDeck’s SteamOS Ryujinx setup.
- Files: Your own game files, keys, and firmware.
- Storage: Internal SSD space is sufficient if it meets your needs. A microSD card is optional extra storage, not a setup requirement.
- Controls: A configured input device. Ryujinx lets you select a device and map controls; supported controllers can also provide motion input, but game-specific behavior is not guaranteed.
The Ryujinx guide lists OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan 1.2 as minimum graphics API levels and gives a general 8 GB RAM minimum. These are general requirements, not Steam Deck-specific performance benchmarks.
Set up Ryujinx on SteamOS
- Install and open EmuDeck. Follow its current SteamOS documentation and choose an installation location. Paths beginning with
Emulation/are relative to that location, so the full root differs between an internal SSD installation and an SD-card installation. - Place your game files. Put your legally obtained, dumped Switch ROMs in
Emulation/roms/switchunder the EmuDeck installation location. - Add your keys. Put your own
prod.keysfile inEmulation/bios/ryujinx/keys. The emulator needs the keys to decrypt supported game files. - Install firmware through Ryujinx. Open Ryujinx and use its graphical interface to install firmware you have dumped. EmuDeck’s documentation specifies the GUI installation step rather than a firmware folder destination.
- Configure controls. In Ryujinx, choose an input device and map the controls you want to use. Check the settings and behavior for each game, especially if it relies on motion input.
- Add games to Steam Game Mode. EmuDeck offers Steam ROM Manager parsers for ES-DE, Nintendo Switch Ryujinx, and Emulators. Use the relevant parser options in the current EmuDeck workflow to add launch entries to Steam. The available parser choices are documented in the EmuDeck Ryujinx guide.
If a game does not appear, first check that it is in the Switch ROM directory for the correct EmuDeck installation root, then check that the intended parser was used. If Ryujinx cannot decrypt or launch it, verify that your keys and firmware are installed and correspond to your own setup; do not fetch replacements from unofficial download sites.

Choose a Ryujinx build
Ryujinx distinguishes stable and canary builds. This is a trade-off between a steadier experience and earlier access to features, not a promise that one build will run every game faster or better.

Check whether a specific game is likely to work
Compatibility is title-specific. Ryujinx’s site reported approximately 4,300 titles tested, more than 4,100 that boot past menus into gameplay, and roughly 3,550 considered playable when checked on October 4, 2026. Those are Ryujinx’s overall, vendor-reported counts—not results for Steam Deck models or a guarantee for any one game. Consult the Ryujinx site and look for information about the exact title and emulator build.
Do not treat “boots,” “reaches gameplay,” and “playable” as interchangeable:

- Boots: The game starts, but may not get past its menus or opening sequence.
- Reaches gameplay: You can get beyond menus into the game, but glitches, control problems, or poor performance may remain.
- Playable: The source considers the experience playable, but that label does not establish performance on your Deck or match every player’s standards.
For a useful compatibility check, look for reports that identify the exact game, Ryujinx version or build, whether it gets past menus, known issues, and actual gameplay quality. A successful launch alone does not establish smooth frame pacing, correct controls, or an acceptable experience. The sources linked here do not provide dependable Steam Deck-specific results for individual named games, so treat general emulator compatibility reports as a starting point rather than a Deck performance promise.

EmuDeck says the original GitHub pages for Yuzu and Citra were taken down, leaving no official source for either, and that it can no longer install Yuzu for new users. Its FAQ says Ryujinx became the default Switch emulator in ES-DE for that reason. Some existing Yuzu installations may continue to receive EmuDeck configuration support, but that is not a reason to seek copies from unofficial mirrors. Legal and file-provenance considerations
Rules for making, possessing, or using game copies, keys, and firmware vary by jurisdiction and circumstance. Nintendo’s Intellectual Property and Piracy FAQ condemns piracy and points users to official channels for Nintendo games. Buying a game does not, by itself, answer whether making or using a particular copy is authorized where you live. Do not download copyrighted games, keys, or firmware from unofficial sources; check local law or consult qualified counsel for advice about your circumstances.
