How to Emulate and Debug Atari 2600 Games with Stella

A practical Stella workflow for opening the Atari 2600 debugger, inspecting state, stepping through execution and testing changes without confusing emulator edits with game behavior.

Stella is a multi-platform Atari 2600 emulator with an integrated debugger. Load a ROM you are entitled to use, record its exact version and TV standard, then use Stella’s debugger to inspect CPU, memory, TIA and RIOT state, step through execution, or stop at breakpoints. This walkthrough focuses on Stella’s documented tools; other emulators may not provide the same debugging features.

Prepare a reproducible test

Choose a ROM and record its identity

Use a ROM you are entitled to use. The documentation cited here does not establish the rules for obtaining or using ROMs, so check the terms that apply to your copy rather than assuming that a particular source or use is permitted.

Before launching the game, write down the ROM filename or revision and whether it is NTSC or PAL. These details matter: Stella’s debugger tutorial uses a particular regular NTSC version of Battlezone and cautions that its example may not work with PAL or modified ROMs. If your results differ, first check that your ROM matches the tutorial’s example rather than treating the difference as an emulator fault.

Open Stella’s debugger

Stella’s debugger documentation says to toggle the debugger with the backquote key. You can also start Stella with -debug. To begin stopped at the initialization vector before the first instruction, the guide gives a command-line example using -break with that vector. The exact way to enter command-line options depends on how Stella is installed and launched.

For Stella’s documented debugger controls and launch examples, see the Stella debugger documentation.

Inspect state before changing it

Start by observing the game without editing values. Stella’s debugger exposes CPU registers and memory, along with TIA and I/O/RIOT information. Its TIA views include graphics and position state, and collision status is presented in decoded form. These views let you compare what the program and video hardware state say at a particular point in execution.

When the game is stopped, note the values relevant to the symptom and where execution is paused. A screenshot or written record can help distinguish the game’s original behavior from anything caused by a later debugger edit.

Advance execution to the problem

Step or trace instructions

Use instruction stepping or tracing when you need to follow CPU execution closely. This is useful for checking what changes immediately before or after a suspected fault. A breakpoint on an address can stop execution when the program reaches a location you want to inspect.

Use conditional breakpoints for specific events

If the event can be described as a condition, Stella supports conditional breakpoints as well as address breakpoints. This can help you stop only when a relevant state occurs instead of repeatedly pausing at the same code location.

Advance by scanline or frame

For visual behavior that may depend on timing, advance by a scanline or a whole frame rather than moving only instruction by instruction. Compare the displayed result and hardware state at each pause. This makes the timing interval under observation explicit, although it does not by itself prove that the same behavior occurs on original hardware.

  • Please review full game list. For better gaming experience, please update the firmware for the product as soon as you plug the item in.

Change state only to test a hypothesis

Stella’s debugger can change CPU registers and memory, and write to many TIA controls. Treat any edit as an experiment: identify the question it is meant to answer, record the original value, make one change, and observe the result. Keep debugger-edited state separate from the game’s unaided behavior in your notes.

  • Record the value and location before editing.
  • Change only what is needed to test the hypothesis.
  • Note whether the observed result followed the edit or occurred before it.

Use symbols when they exist

For software you are developing, DASM-generated listing and symbol files can give debugger addresses meaningful labels. Labels make code locations easier to recognize, but they are not guaranteed to exist for an arbitrary commercial ROM. Stella’s debugger documentation describes symbol support.

If you are moving from debugging a game to writing Atari 2600 software, Stella’s homebrew resources link to a programmer’s guide, bankswitching material and tutorials. The historical programmer’s guide is attributed to Steve Wright in the indexed record, dated 12/03/1979; the date format is ambiguous and is retained as displayed.

What an emulator session can and cannot establish

A Stella debugging session lets you inspect and manipulate the emulator’s representation of the game and hardware state. It is useful for narrowing down where behavior changes and for reproducing a software-level issue. The documentation cited here does not independently evaluate emulation accuracy or establish that a result will be identical on original Atari 2600 hardware. If the distinction matters, treat hardware testing as a separate validation step rather than assuming an emulator result proves hardware behavior.

Stella’s documentation describes its debugger as “completely cross-platform”; that is a description of the debugger’s availability across platforms, not a claim that every emulator has the same tools or that every ROM will behave identically.
