To embed YouTube Live Chat on your website during a livestream, put YouTube’s live-chat URL in an iframe and replace its video ID and embed_domain with values for your stream and the page hosting the iframe. The host must match exactly. YouTube says this chat embed is unavailable on mobile web.
Embed YouTube Live Chat with an iframe
- Get the stream’s video ID. Open its YouTube watch-page URL. In a URL such as
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12345, the video ID is12345. - Find the host name of the page that will contain the chat. For
https://www.example.com/youtube_chat, the host iswww.example.com. Leave out the protocol, path and trailing slash. - Build the live-chat URL. Use YouTube’s documented format, replacing both example values:
https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=12345&embed_domain=www.example.com - Use it as the iframe source. For example, the following is illustrative HTML; change the video ID and host to match your own stream and page:
<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=12345&embed_domain=www.example.com"></iframe>
YouTube’s Help instructions identify the live-chat URL as the iframe URL and specify that the value of embed_domain must match the domain of the page containing the iframe. If the values differ, the embedded chat will not open. For example, if the page is hosted at www.example.com, do not use example.com or a different subdomain as the embed domain. Keep the chat embed separate from the video player
The chat iframe and the YouTube video player embed are separate. YouTube says Live Chat is available on the YouTube watch page, not on embedded players. Adding an embedded player to your page does not, by itself, add the chat; embed the live-chat URL separately. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
Availability and lifecycle limits
- Mobile web: YouTube Help says embedding Live Chat is not available on mobile web. Do not assume the chat iframe will work there.
- Live event only: YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation says a live chat is available while its live event is active and is no longer available for that event after it ends. The documented embed pattern is for a live stream; it does not establish that the same URL works for a replay or an ordinary video.

When to use the Live Streaming API instead
The iframe is the simpler fit when you want to show YouTube’s chat interface on your site. If you are building an application that needs to retrieve and present messages in its own interface, YouTube documents API methods for that task:
liveChatMessages.listretrieves messages using a live chat ID associated with the broadcast. The broadcast’ssnippet.liveChatIdprovides that ID. List responses include a polling interval and page token.liveChatMessages.streamListprovides a server-streaming connection for low-latency message delivery. YouTube recommends it rather than repeatedly polling withlist.
This is a software-development route, not a ready-made iframe: your application must make the API requests and handle the live chat’s lifecycle. Consult the LiveChatMessages API reference and the streamList method reference for method details. The documented retrieval methods do not make the API a turnkey, unauthenticated chat embed.
