You cannot put a universally clickable URL inside a PNG file itself. Make the image clickable where it is displayed by wrapping it in an HTML <a> element, use your publishing app’s image-link control, or provide the URL separately (or as a QR code) when the PNG is shared alone.
The direct answer: link the image in its container
A PNG stores pixels. It does not carry a portable click action that browsers, email clients, file viewers and social apps will all recognize. On a web page, the dependable pattern is an anchor whose href contains the destination and whose content is the image:

</a>The anchor is the link; the PNG remains an image. The MDN image-element reference and the HTML Standard’s images section describe this document-level relationship.
Choose useful alternative text
Write alt text that explains the link’s purpose, such as “Read the pricing guide,” rather than listing every visual detail. When an image is used as a link, Google says the alt text can function as the anchor text; keep it descriptive and avoid keyword stuffing. See Google’s image SEO guidance.

Make the whole image one target
If any click on the artwork should open the same destination, the single wrapper above is sufficient. The destination can be changed later by editing the page’s href; you do not need to recreate the PNG.
Why PNG metadata does not make a file clickable
PNG does support text chunks. The PNG Specification (Second Edition) states: “PNG provides the tEXt, iTXt, and zTXt chunks for storing text strings associated with the image, such as an image description or copyright notice.” Those chunks can hold fields such as Title, Author, Description, Copyright, Creation Time, Software, Disclaimer, Warning, Source and Comment.
They are descriptive data, not an instruction that every viewer must follow when a person clicks the picture. A particular application could choose to interpret a metadata value as a URL, but that behavior is not a portable web standard. Use an actual link element for predictable navigation.

An image-link button in a publishing platform creates a link in that platform’s document or post. It does not modify the PNG into a universally clickable file. Exact labels and limitations depend on the service and its current version.

Responsive images

</a>Keep the fallback src valid. loading="lazy" can reduce initial page work for images below the fold, but do not lazy-load a prominent link that users need immediately.
Do not make a fake link in the artwork
Text such as “click here” drawn into pixels is not keyboard-focusable, cannot be copied as a URL and is not exposed as a link to assistive technology. Keep the destination in HTML and use visible text or an informative alt value as the fallback.
Different destinations in different parts of one image
When a diagram, floor plan or map needs several targets, page-level regions can provide separate hit areas. An HTML image map keeps those targets in the document, not in the PNG:

</map>Image maps require accurate coordinates and careful testing at different display sizes. For responsive or accessibility-heavy interfaces, separate HTML elements positioned over the image, or separate linked image pieces, are often easier to maintain. Each region still belongs to the host page’s markup.
When the image must travel alone
Put the URL beside it
A standalone attachment has no dependable click context. Send a caption, message or adjacent line containing the complete URL. This is the clearest fallback for screen readers, copy-and-paste and viewers that ignore metadata.

A QR code turns the destination into scannable visual content. It is not a hyperlink embedded in PNG behavior: the recipient must scan it with a camera or QR reader. Keep a printed or typed URL nearby for people who cannot scan.
Use a short, durable destination
If the artwork will be distributed widely, point the link or QR code to a URL you control and redirect it when necessary. That lets you change the final page without recoloring or redistributing the image.
How to check a linked PNG before publishing
- Open the page in a keyboard-capable browser and press Tab until the image link receives focus.
- Activate it with Enter and verify the exact destination, protocol and path.
- Check the same page at narrow and wide widths; image maps and overlays can drift when dimensions change.
- Disable images temporarily or inspect the accessibility tree to confirm the link still has useful text from
alt. - Test the destination in a signed-out or private window if access permissions might differ for visitors.
- For a QR code, scan from the intended print or display size and confirm that the decoded URL matches the visible fallback URL.
Troubleshooting common failures
The image displays but clicking does nothing
Inspect the rendered markup. The <img> must be inside an <a>, or the publishing tool must show an image-link destination. A URL typed into PNG metadata or painted onto the pixels will not create a browser link.

Only part of the image should be clickable, but the target is wrong
Check image-map coordinates against the actual rendered dimensions. If CSS scales the image, fixed pixel coordinates can no longer line up. Recalculate coordinates or use responsive overlay elements.

The link works on desktop but not in an email or social post
Those products sanitize HTML and may remove anchors, strip image maps or require their own link control. Use the platform’s documented image-link workflow and provide a visible URL when the service does not preserve the link.
Screen readers announce an unhelpful link
Replace generic or empty alt text with the action or destination purpose. If the image is decorative and adjacent text already supplies the link label, use alt="" so assistive technology does not announce the same information twice.
A QR code scans to the wrong address
Decode it with more than one scanner, compare the result character by character and check for an unintended tracking or redirect parameter. Keep sufficient contrast and a clear margin around the code; do not crop its quiet zone.

Practical decision guide
- Use an HTML anchor when the PNG appears on a website and one destination serves the whole image.
- Use an image map or separate linked elements when distinct regions need different destinations.
- Use the host application’s image-link command in email, documents or social platforms; verify its current restrictions.
- Provide nearby text or a QR code when the file will be downloaded, attached or printed by itself.
- Never rely on PNG text metadata as a cross-viewer hyperlink mechanism.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a PNG clickable in Windows or macOS File Explorer?
No portable click behavior is defined for a PNG opened as a file. Put the URL in the accompanying message or open the image inside a document or web page that supplies the link.
Will renaming a PNG with a URL extension create a hyperlink?
No. A filename, comment field or other text metadata does not establish navigation. The application displaying the image must provide an actual link.
Can I change a web image’s destination without replacing the image?
Yes. When the image is wrapped in an HTML anchor, edit the anchor’s href; the PNG pixels remain unchanged.
