That simple comparison helps separate a website problem from a connection or Chrome problem. The steps below focus on Chrome on Android; other browsers have their own menus and settings. Start with the least disruptive checks, and clear browsing data only if the evidence points toward Chrome’s saved session.
First, find out how widespread the problem is
Reload the page once, then compare a few pages before changing settings. Open another page on the same site and then visit a different website. Note whether the page text loads while images do not, or whether the whole page struggles to load; this comparison helps describe the problem, but does not by itself identify its cause.
- Images are missing on several unrelated sites: check the phone’s internet connection first.
- Only one website is affected: reload it, then test the same URL in Chrome Incognito and another browser.
- Only one page on a site is affected: check another page on that site before treating it as a site-wide issue.
Google’s Chrome Help guidance recommends checking whether a loading issue affects one website or multiple websites. It also notes that a website may be down or under maintenance. These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not proof: a single site can have a local or temporary problem, while a browser or connection issue can affect multiple pages.
If several websites have missing images, check the connection
When unrelated websites are affected, confirm that Android is actually online before changing Chrome data. Try loading a page that is mostly text, or use another app that needs an internet connection. If those also fail, the issue is broader than images in one browser session.

- Check Wi-Fi or mobile data. Confirm the phone is connected to a working network. If you use mobile service, make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Finish public Wi-Fi sign-in. Some public networks require a sign-in or acceptance page before regular internet access is available. Open the network’s prompt if Android displays one, complete it, and reload the website.
- Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data, if available. If pages work on one connection but not the other, that narrows the issue to the connection path. It does not establish the exact cause.
- Check the Wi-Fi equipment. If Wi-Fi is the only connection failing, check that the modem and router are working. Google’s Android Chrome guidance suggests restarting them if needed; follow the equipment maker’s instructions and allow the connection to return before testing again.
Do not assume a VPN, DNS change, ad blocker, or new network equipment is the answer. The checks above establish whether connectivity is a likely part of the problem without making a change that could create a different one.
If one website is affected, isolate the page and Chrome session
A site-specific failure may come from the page, the site, or data saved in the regular Chrome session. Try these checks in order so you can tell which change, if any, affects the result.
Reload and compare another page
Reload the affected page, then open a second page on the same website. If the second page works, the problem may be limited to the first page or its content. If both fail but other sites work, the issue may be limited to that website. A loading problem can also be temporary, including when a site is down or undergoing maintenance.

Open the URL in a Chrome Incognito tab
In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito tab, then enter the affected URL. If images work there but not in the regular tab, that points toward data or state associated with the regular browsing session. It is a clue, not proof of a specific cause. Google recommends deleting browsing data as a next step when the issue goes away in Incognito.

Update and restart Chrome
Check the Google Play Store for a Chrome update and install one if it is available. Then close and reopen Chrome and test the page again. If the phone has many open tabs or apps and appears short on memory, close unused ones before retrying. These steps can eliminate a stale app session or resource pressure without deleting saved browsing data.
Clear Chrome’s cached files carefully
If the Incognito comparison suggests the regular session may be involved, clear only the relevant data first. In Chrome for Android, open the three-dot menu and select Delete browsing data. Choose an appropriate time range and select Cached images and files. Review the selected categories before confirming deletion so you do not remove more than intended.

Cached images and files are locally stored copies that Chrome may use when loading pages. Removing them can make a page download its images again, so it may load more slowly the next time. If the problem remains, clearing cookies or site data is a more disruptive option, not the automatic next click: doing so can remove saved preferences and sign you out of websites. You may need to sign in again.
After clearing the cache, reopen the affected URL and wait for it to finish loading. If the images return, the cached data was a useful lead. If they do not, do not repeatedly clear data; move on to comparing browsers and connections instead.

Check Chrome’s on-device site-data setting only when relevant
Chrome has an On-device site data setting that controls whether sites may save information locally on the device. Google says sites are more likely to work as expected when they are allowed to save data, and may not work as expected when this is disallowed.

This is not a dedicated permission for displaying images, and the available guidance does not identify it as a direct fix for missing pictures. Consider checking it if other site features that depend on saved data are also failing. If the issue is images alone, start with the scope, connection, Incognito, and cache checks instead of treating this setting as a universal image switch.

Open the same URL in another browser installed on the phone. If images appear there but not in Chrome, focus further troubleshooting on Chrome. If the page fails in multiple browsers, the website or network may be involved. These comparisons narrow the possibilities but do not confirm a cause.
If one website remains broken after reloading, trying Incognito, and comparing browsers, contact the site owner. Include the exact page URL and a concise description of what you tried: whether another page on the site works, whether the same URL works in Incognito or another browser, and whether other websites load normally. Do not send passwords, access codes, or other private account information.
