What .htaccess does—and when it applies
.htaccess is Apache’s per-directory configuration file. WordPress commonly uses it to implement “pretty” permalinks: Apache checks whether a requested path is a real file or directory and sends other requests to WordPress’s index.php.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
This file is not a universal WordPress setting. A site served by Nginx uses server-block configuration, while an IIS installation uses web.config. Editing .htaccess on those servers will not fix rewrite problems. On managed hosting, check the host’s documentation or ask support before changing server configuration.
That server check determines both whether the file is relevant and which directives are allowed. Even two Apache hosts can differ in enabled modules, directory-override policy, document-root layout, and permitted contexts. A rule copied from another site can therefore produce a 500 error instead of solving the original problem.

Prepare a safe change
Confirm the server and access method
- Check your hosting control panel, technical documentation, or support response for Apache or an Apache-compatible web server.
- Choose an access path: the WordPress dashboard for standard permalink regeneration, an SFTP/FTP client, a hosting file manager, or SSH.
- Ensure you can restore the original file without relying on the edit you are about to make. If you have no working backup or file access, do not begin a live edit.
Use the dashboard only for the narrow task it handles well: regenerating WordPress’s ordinary rewrite rules. Use SFTP, FTP, a host file manager, or SSH for a deliberate custom change, and choose the method you can reverse confidently. If the host manages Apache centrally, a support ticket may be safer than a direct edit because the provider can confirm the permitted directives and apply the change in the correct virtual host.
Define the change before opening the file
Write down the exact behavior you want: a single redirect, an access restriction, an HTTPS requirement, or restoration of ordinary permalinks. Record the old URL, the intended destination or response, and the URLs that must remain unaffected. This keeps a small edit from turning into an untracked rewrite overhaul.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Review the existing file before changing it. List custom redirects and rewrites separately from the WordPress block, note whether the installation is in the document root or a subdirectory, and identify any host-provided rules. If a plugin or host inserted directives, do not remove them simply because they are unfamiliar; ask the provider or plugin documentation what they do first.
Back up both the file and the site
Download the current .htaccess unchanged and save it with a date and time in a private location. Also create a current backup of the WordPress files and database. WordPress migration guidance puts this plainly: “Make a backup copy of your .htaccess file. This is not a recommendation but a requirement.”
Copy every existing custom redirect or rewrite into a separate text file as well. A later permalink regeneration can replace WordPress’s managed section, so the separate copy is your reference when checking that custom behavior still exists. A full backup matters because a rewrite mistake can prevent dashboard access even though the database and WordPress files remain intact.
Find the correct file
For a normal root installation, .htaccess is in the same directory as the main WordPress index.php. It is a dotfile, so many FTP clients and hosting file managers hide it.
- Open the site’s document root—the directory containing
index.php,wp-admin,wp-content, andwp-includes. - Enable Show hidden files, Show dotfiles, or the equivalent option in your SFTP/FTP client or host file manager.
- Verify the filename is exactly
.htaccess, with no added extension such as.txt. - If the file does not exist, use the WordPress Permalinks screen to generate the required rules, or create a new plain-text file locally and upload it only after checking the contents.
Some operating systems do not let you create a filename beginning with a dot through a normal save dialog. Saving as htaccess.txt and renaming it to .htaccess before upload can work, but confirm that the final remote filename has no extension.
Do not assume the first directory you see is the right one. Add-on domains, staging sites, and subdirectory installs can have separate document roots. Uploading a flawless file to another site’s directory has no effect on the URL you are testing and can create a new problem elsewhere.
Edit a copy, not the only live copy
Use a plain-text editor
Use an editor that does not insert rich-text formatting, smart quotation marks, hidden markup, or an unexpected encoding. Keep the original download untouched, edit a duplicate, and preserve the file’s line endings and encoding. Make one logically scoped change at a time so a failure has an obvious cause.

Before uploading, check for accidental characters before the first directive, unmatched quotes, misspelled directive names, and rules copied from a different document root or Apache version. Do not paste screenshots or formatted text into the file. If your editor offers a syntax or plain-text mode, use it and save without an automatic extension.
Preserve the WordPress-managed block
WordPress may rewrite the section between # BEGIN WordPress and # END WordPress. Leave that block intact unless you are deliberately replacing it with the exact rules shown by WordPress. Put custom redirects, access restrictions, cache rules, or other directives before or after the markers—not inside them.
For a root installation, the standard baseline shown in WordPress’s Apache documentation is:
# BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
# END WordPress
The exact rules can differ for a subdirectory installation or a host with custom configuration. Do not paste a root-install block into a site installed under a path unless WordPress’s own Permalinks screen displays those rules for that site.
The comments are operational boundaries, not decoration. WordPress uses them to identify the section it owns when it updates permalink settings. A custom redirect placed inside those boundaries can disappear after a later visit to the Permalinks screen. Keeping your rules outside them makes the ownership clear and simplifies comparison with the downloaded backup.

Regenerate standard permalink rules through WordPress
If your objective is to restore ordinary WordPress rewrites, the dashboard is usually safer than hand-editing. Go to Settings → Permalinks in wp-admin and visit the screen. Saving the existing structure is useful when you intentionally changed it; merely visiting the screen flushes rewrite rules, so an additional save is not required just to flush them.
When .htaccess is writable, WordPress can write the rules automatically. When it is not writable, the screen displays the exact rules to copy manually. Copy only what WordPress shows, retain your backup, and place unrelated custom directives outside the managed markers.
If you cannot reach the dashboard, do not repeatedly edit the file hoping a rewrite will appear. Use the last known-good copy, verify Apache and directory overrides with the host, and then apply the displayed WordPress block manually through SFTP or the host file manager. Once access is restored, revisit the Permalinks screen and confirm that the intended structure is still selected.
Add security rules cautiously
WordPress’s official Apache examples include denying web access to sensitive files such as wp-config.php, .htaccess, .htpasswd, and debug.log with a FilesMatch rule, as well as requiring SSL in an administrator’s .htaccess context. These are examples, not universal drop-in snippets.

Validate every directive against the Apache version, hosting policy, document root, and application behavior. A rule that is valid in one server context may cause a 500 error in another. Test that legitimate administrative requests, updates, diagnostics, APIs, and static assets still work. If your host supplies a security rule, use its documented form rather than combining snippets from unrelated configurations.
Apply one security rule at a time and record what response you expect: a denied request, a redirect to HTTPS, or an unchanged response for an allowed file. Check both an intentionally protected path and a normal page. A rule that blocks an accidentally broad filename pattern can interfere with WordPress updates, debugging, feeds, or API requests even when the homepage still loads.
Upload with permissions and rollback under control
- Compare the edited copy with the untouched download and confirm that only the intended lines changed.
- Keep the old file in a private, non-public backup location or on your local machine. Do not leave a backup such as
.htaccess.bakin a web-accessible directory if it could disclose configuration. - Upload the edited file to the exact directory containing the live WordPress
index.php. - Use the narrowest permissions that allow the required operation. Do not make the file world-writable merely to let WordPress update it.
- If ownership or permissions prevent a safe update, ask the host to correct ownership or apply the change rather than broadly opening write access.
WordPress notes that the file may need to be writable for automatic permalink updates, but restrictive permissions are the safer starting point. If it cannot be written, manually copying the rules displayed on the Permalinks screen is preferable to granting unnecessarily broad permissions.
After uploading, confirm the remote timestamp or use the client’s compare feature so you know which copy is live. Keep the rollback copy available until every test passes and any cache has been cleared. Never treat a public backup filename as a rollback plan: if it is downloadable, it may expose server configuration.

Test immediately after the change
Use a private browser window or a cache-cleared session, then check more than the homepage. A rewrite can appear successful while breaking only a particular URL pattern.
- The homepage and at least one recent post.
- Several older posts and pages, including a URL with a slug or date structure that existed before the edit.
- Category and tag archives, author archives, and pagination.
- The
/wp-login.phppage and an authenticated administration page. - Media files, feeds, XML sitemaps, and any API endpoint your site uses.
- Every redirect you added or preserved, including the old URL and its expected destination.
- The behavior the change was intended to affect, such as an HTTPS redirect or access restriction.
Test from a device or network that is not relying on an old cached response. Check the web server’s error log when a request fails; it often identifies a directive or permission problem that the browser reports only as “500 Internal Server Error.”
For redirects, test the source URL directly and follow the chain to its final destination. Confirm that the destination does not point back to the source and that query strings or important path segments behave as intended. For access rules, test a protected file and a normal WordPress request so you do not mistake a site-wide block for a successful restriction.
Recover when the site breaks
500 Internal Server Error immediately after upload
- Restore the previously downloaded
.htaccessfirst. This is the fastest way to remove a syntax or context error. - Reload the homepage and an administrative URL to confirm that the rollback took effect.
- Compare the failed version with the original one line by line. Look for unsupported directives, malformed conditions, incorrect quoting, and rules copied for a different server context.
- Ask the host for the Apache error-log entry and confirmation of which directives are permitted in the directory.
Do not make several corrective edits before testing the rollback. A known-good file separates the original site problem from the new rule and gives support staff a reproducible starting point.

If the homepage works but only a subdirectory fails, verify that you edited the .htaccess in the installation’s actual document root and that the rewrite base matches the installation path. Also check whether the failing URL is a real file or directory that should be excluded by the standard conditions.
Redirect loops or wrong destinations
Temporarily remove the new redirect while the old file is restored, then test one redirect at a time. Check whether both WordPress and Apache are enforcing HTTPS, whether a proxy or CDN adds another redirect, and whether the destination itself redirects back to the source. Preserve the original redirect list so you can distinguish a missing rule from a conflicting rule.
WordPress cannot update the file
Do not solve a write error by making .htaccess world-writable. Use the rules displayed on the Permalinks screen and upload them through SFTP or the host file manager, or have the host repair file ownership and permissions. Retest after the manual update.

| Method | Best use | Compatibility and rollback | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings → Permalinks | Restore or regenerate standard WordPress rewrite rules | Requires working dashboard access; WordPress supplies the appropriate rules for the installation | Custom rules can be lost if they were placed inside WordPress’s managed markers |
| SFTP/FTP client | Precise edits when dashboard access is available or unavailable | Works for Apache-hosted files; downloaded original provides a direct rollback | Hidden files may be invisible until dotfiles are enabled; an upload to the wrong directory has no effect |
| Hosting file manager | Quick access when no desktop client is installed | Depends on the host; use its backup or version history if provided | Editors may alter encoding or permissions, and a public backup copy can expose configuration |
| SSH | Experienced administrators making controlled, logged changes | Fast rollback when a known-good copy is available; requires shell access | A syntax error can take the site down immediately, and commands run in the wrong directory affect another site |
Compare these methods by server compatibility, access path, rollback quality, permission model, and whether WordPress might overwrite the section you changed. The best method is the one that leaves a dated original, lets you verify the exact remote path, and gives you a reliable way to test and reverse the change.
Rules that prevent most .htaccess incidents
- Confirm Apache compatibility before touching the file.
- Keep both a current file backup and a current full site/database backup.
- Reveal dotfiles and verify the document root before downloading or uploading.
- Edit one logical change in plain text; preserve encoding and line endings.
- Keep custom directives outside
# BEGIN WordPressand# END WordPress. - Use the Permalinks screen for standard WordPress rewrites whenever possible.
- Use minimum required permissions; never rely on world-writable settings.
- Test representative content, administration, media, and redirects immediately.
- If a failure appears, restore the last known-good file before investigating more deeply.
When not to edit .htaccess yourself
Stop and involve your host or an administrator when the server is Nginx or IIS, you cannot obtain a backup, the host forbids directory overrides, the site uses a complex proxy or multisite arrangement, or the error log reports directives you cannot identify. A controlled host-side change with a rollback plan is safer than repeated live edits.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the WordPress .htaccess file?
It is normally in the WordPress directory containing the main index.php, alongside wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes. Enable hidden or dotfile visibility in your SFTP/FTP client or hosting file manager. Verify the exact filename and document root before editing.
How can I edit it if it does not exist?
Open Settings → Permalinks and visit the screen. If the file is writable, WordPress can create or update the standard rules. If it is not writable, WordPress displays the rules to copy manually into a new plain-text .htaccess file.
Why did permalinks start returning 404 after my edit?
Restore the previous file, visit the Permalinks screen to flush rewrite rules, and verify that Apache has mod_rewrite and permits directory overrides. A wrong document root, an incorrect subdirectory base, or unavailable host rewrite support can also cause pretty-permalink 404s.
What should I do if the site shows a 500 error?
Restore the last known-good .htaccess immediately, then request the Apache error-log entry from your host. Compare the failed copy for unsupported directives, malformed conditions, quoting mistakes, or rules used in the wrong context before trying another change.
Best Value
Will WordPress overwrite my custom rules?
It can rewrite the area between # BEGIN WordPress and # END WordPress. Keep custom redirects, access controls, and other directives outside those markers, and retain a separate copy of them for later verification.
Should I make the file writable to fix an update error?
No. World-writable permissions weaken security. Use the exact rules shown by the Permalinks screen and upload them through SFTP or the host file manager, or ask the host to correct ownership and apply the minimum required permissions.

How do I edit the WordPress .htaccess file safely?
Confirm Apache compatibility, back up the file and the full site/database, reveal hidden files, edit a plain-text copy, keep custom rules outside WordPress markers, upload with rollback ready, and test representative URLs immediately.
Where is .htaccess?
Usually in the WordPress document root beside the main index.php. Enable Show hidden files or Show dotfiles in your SFTP/FTP client or hosting file manager.
Why are my WordPress permalinks showing 404 after I changed .htaccess?
Restore the previous file, visit Settings → Permalinks to flush rewrite rules, and ask the host to verify mod_rewrite and directory overrides. Also confirm the document root and installation path.
How do I restore .htaccess if the site breaks?
Upload the untouched backup you downloaded before editing, verify the homepage and an admin URL, then inspect the error log or contact the host before making another change.
Can WordPress regenerate .htaccess automatically?
Yes, when the file is writable. Otherwise the Permalinks screen displays the exact rules to copy manually. Keep custom directives outside the managed markers.
The Bottom Line
The safest .htaccess edit is a controlled, reversible change: confirm Apache, back up the file and site, edit a plain-text copy, preserve WordPress’s managed block, use minimum permissions, upload to the verified document root, and test posts, archives, administration, media, and redirects. If a 404 or 500 error appears, restore the last known-good file first and involve the host when rewrite support or server context is uncertain.
