Change your 7 Days to Die server’s public name, description, listing status, and join password in serverconfig.xml—or in your host’s control panel when the panel manages that file. Stop the server before editing, save the file, and restart it. If the server still does not appear in the browser, check that you edited the file the launch command actually loads and that the visibility value is permitted by your panel and file comments.

Where public server details are stored
The game reads public-facing identity and listing settings from serverconfig.xml. The exact editing method depends on who runs the machine.

Self-managed installation
On a server you administer yourself, look for serverconfig.xml in the server’s root installation directory. This is the directory containing the dedicated-server files and the launch script or executable. Do not assume that a similarly named copy elsewhere is active.
Hosted server
For a rented server, sign in to the provider’s control panel, open the server’s management page, choose the Files area, and open serverconfig.xml. Some panels expose name, password, and player-limit controls on a Startup tab and write those values into the XML whenever the server starts. In that situation, use the panel fields instead of hand-editing the file; a direct edit can be replaced at the next start.

How do I change my 7 Days to Die server name?
Stop the server first, then edit the ServerName element. The stock value is My Game Host; replace the text between the tags with the title you want players to see in the server browser.

Save the file, then start the server again. The browser reads the new name after the server has loaded the configuration; changing a file while the process is running does not reliably update the listing.

The usual default is 2. Set the value to 2 when you want a public listing under this majority interpretation:
<property name="ServerVisibility" value="2" />There is a conflicting interpretation in one 2026 guide, which labels 1 as listed and 2 as listed with password. Because the labels are disputed, read the comments in your own serverconfig.xml and follow the meanings documented there. A provider can also lock this setting or expose a different control in its panel; if the field is read-only, use the panel’s visibility option or ask the provider which value it supports.
Server password and public visibility are separate
ServerPassword controls whether joining requires a password. Its default is blank, which means the server is open rather than password-protected.

Conversely, leaving the password blank does not make an unlisted server public; visibility remains controlled by ServerVisibility. If your host manages the password from a Startup tab, set it there so it is not overwritten.
Edit serverconfig.xml safely: exact procedure
- Identify the active installation. Open the server’s root directory, or the hosted panel’s Files section, and locate the configuration file.
- Check the launch parameter. Inspect the startup command or script for
-configfile=<name>.xml. If this option is present, the server loads the named file rather than the stockserverconfig.xml. Edit that named file instead. - Stop the server cleanly. Use the panel’s Stop control or stop the dedicated-server process. A clean shutdown can rewrite the configuration, so a live edit may be lost when the process exits.
- Make a recovery copy. Save a copy of the current XML before changing it. If the server fails to start or a value is rejected, you can restore the previous file.
- Edit only the required values. Change
ServerName,ServerDescription,ServerVisibility, and, if needed,ServerPassword. Leave unrelated settings unchanged. - Validate the XML shape. Keep each
<property>element closed, preserve quotation marks, and avoid deleting the surrounding configuration entries. - Save the file in the panel or server directory. Confirm that the editor reports a successful save and that you changed the active file, not a template or backup.
- Start or restart the server. The new values are read during startup. A running server will not necessarily publish a changed name or visibility until it has restarted.
- Verify from a client. Search the browser for the exact new name, inspect the description, and test joining with the password if one is configured.
7 Days to Die server not showing in browser: troubleshooting
You edited the wrong file
Look for -configfile= in the launch script or service definition. For example, a command that contains -configfile=serverconfig-production.xml means edits to the stock serverconfig.xml will have no effect. Change the file named by the parameter, then restart.
The server is still running
Stop it before saving. The game can write its current settings during a clean shutdown, replacing a live edit. After saving, start the process again and allow it to finish loading before checking the browser.
A hosting panel rewrote your values
Compare the file after a restart with what you entered. If the name or password reverted, the panel is likely managing those fields. Set them on the panel’s Startup or equivalent settings page, save there, and restart. Panel behavior is provider-specific, so a locked visibility field should be treated as an intentional panel control rather than bypassed blindly.

Check the inline comments supplied with your own configuration. Most documentation uses 0 for unlisted, 1 for friends only, and 2 for public, but another 2026 guide assigns different labels. The comments in the file used by your installation are the most relevant local reference. If the server is friends-only, it will not appear in the public browser; players must connect by IP.
The public name changed in the file but not in the browser
Confirm that the server actually restarted, that the file timestamp changed, and that you searched for the complete new name rather than the old one. A browser listing can take time to refresh after startup; first verify that the server is running and reachable, then repeat the search.
The server starts but ignores the edit
- Recheck the active file and any
-configfileargument. - Look for a panel field that regenerates the XML.
- Restore your backup if the XML structure was damaged, then make one small change at a time.
- Confirm that the panel account has permission to save the file.

Version note for readers following older guides
One hosting guide notes that, since V3.0, several difficulty, loot, experience, day-length, airdrop, and zombie settings are no longer separate lines in serverconfig.xml. That change does not remove the name, description, visibility, or password fields discussed here. If an older tutorial tells you to edit a gameplay line that is missing, do not add it merely to make the file look like the tutorial; concentrate on the fields present in your active configuration and use the panel controls for settings it now manages.
What players should see after a successful change
- Name: the new
ServerNameappears as the browser title. - Description: the new
ServerDescriptionappears alongside or beneath the listing, depending on the client view. - Visibility: a public value allows a listing; unlisted or friends-only values keep it out of the public browser.
- Password: a non-blank
ServerPasswordprompts joining players for credentials.
If any one of these remains unchanged, troubleshoot the active file, restart state, and panel ownership separately rather than changing all four values again.
