How to Edit or Delete Android Keyboard Shortcuts

Android keyboard shortcuts depend on the keyboard app. Learn where Samsung Keyboard stores text shortcuts and how Gboard handles unwanted suggestions and dictionary words.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android keyboard shortcuts are managed by the keyboard app, not by one universal Android menu. On Samsung Keyboard, open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts to add or remove a phrase shortcut. Gboard’s documented controls cover unwanted suggestions and dictionary words, not phrase-expansion shortcuts. First identify which keyboard is active and whether you mean a configured shortcut, a saved word, or a learned suggestion.

First identify what you want to change

People use “keyboard shortcut” to mean several different things. A configured phrase shortcut expands a short text string into a longer phrase. A dictionary word is a spelling the keyboard should recognize. A learned suggestion is a word or phrase offered as you type. The right control depends on which one you are seeing.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These distinctions matter because the actions are not interchangeable. If a short string expands into text you did not expect, look for a configured shortcut. If a correctly spelled name or term is marked as an error, you may need a dictionary control. If an unwanted word appears in the suggestion bar while you type, you may be able to remove that learned suggestion. Removing a suggestion does not necessarily delete a configured shortcut, and adding a dictionary word does not make it expand into a longer phrase.

The instructions below apply to Samsung Keyboard and Gboard. Samsung notes that steps for third-party keyboards can differ, and Google’s help describes Gboard-specific suggestion and dictionary controls. There is no single menu path that applies to every Android keyboard.

What you mean Samsung Keyboard Gboard
Configured phrase shortcut Text shortcuts settings: add with +; delete with the bin icon. The cited Gboard instructions do not establish a phrase-shortcut edit or delete control.
Unwanted learned suggestion Touch and hold the suggestion, then confirm Remove. Touch and hold the suggestion and drag it to Bin.
Word to recognize Personalized prediction controls are available in Samsung Keyboard settings. Tap a red-underlined word and choose Add to dictionary.

These are different operations: removing a suggested word does not delete a configured phrase shortcut, and adding a dictionary word is not the same as creating a shortcut. Samsung and Google describe their respective controls in their Samsung Keyboard support guide and Gboard Help.

Check which keyboard is active

  1. Open an app with a text field and tap the field so the keyboard appears.
  2. Look at the keyboard’s name or its settings gear. If the gear is visible, tap it to open that keyboard’s settings.
  3. If the keyboard name is unclear, open Android Settings and search for “keyboard.” Check the active keyboard or input-method settings, then open the settings for that app.

This first check prevents a common detour: following Samsung steps when the phone is displaying Gboard, or looking for Gboard controls while another keyboard is active. Keyboard settings belong to the keyboard app in use. A setting with a similar name in a different keyboard may not manage the item you are trying to change.

If you are unsure whether the issue is a shortcut or a suggestion, note what happens. A configured phrase shortcut is associated with a short text string and an expanded phrase in Samsung’s Text shortcuts list. A learned suggestion appears in the predictive toolbar as you type. A dictionary issue is more likely when a word is underlined as misspelled even though you want the keyboard to recognize it. These clues help you choose the right procedure, but do not assume that every suggestion must come from a configured shortcut.

Menu labels and paths can differ by device, Android version, and keyboard version. Samsung’s current US guidance uses the path below, while also noting that older devices or operating systems may not show every option. Google’s cited Gboard instructions apply to some steps on Android 7.0 and up. If your labels differ, use Settings search or the active keyboard’s own settings rather than assuming another phone will have the same menus.

Edit or delete a phrase shortcut in Samsung Keyboard

Open the shortcut list

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Samsung Keyboard settings.
  4. Tap Text shortcuts.

This is Samsung’s current described path for the shortcut list. The screen contains configured shortcuts and their expanded phrases. If you do not see the same labels, search Settings for “Samsung Keyboard” or “Text shortcuts,” or open the Samsung Keyboard settings from the keyboard itself if its gear is available. The menu may differ on an older device or operating system.

Before changing an entry, confirm that the shortcut and expanded phrase shown in the list match the text you are trying to correct. A suggestion that appears as you type is not, by itself, evidence that a matching phrase shortcut is saved here. If the list does not contain the entry you expect, return to the distinction between configured shortcuts and learned suggestions rather than deleting an unrelated shortcut.

Add a shortcut

  1. In Text shortcuts, tap the + icon.
  2. Enter the short text you want to use as the shortcut.
  3. Enter the longer phrase it should expand to.
  4. Tap Add.

Make the shortcut easy to type without accidentally entering it in ordinary messages. The support instructions require a shortcut phrase and an expanded phrase; they do not specify a required format or length. The important task is to enter the intended short form and the complete phrase in their respective fields, then save the entry with Add.

If you are replacing a shortcut that expands incorrectly, prepare the corrected short form and expanded phrase before adding the new entry. That makes it easier to check that the replacement contains the wording you want. Do not treat this as a universal Android process: the documented steps here are for Samsung Keyboard’s Text shortcuts list.

Delete or correct an existing shortcut

To remove an entry, open Text shortcuts and tap the bin icon in the top-right corner of the shortcut screen. Samsung’s support instructions document adding and deleting entries, but do not describe an in-place edit action for an existing entry. If you cannot find an edit control, remove the old shortcut and create a corrected one using the add steps above. Avoid assuming the same edit control is present on every device.

Deletion is appropriate when you no longer want the short form to expand. If you want to keep using the same short form but change the expanded wording, the documented fallback is to remove the old entry and add it again with the corrected expansion. This is different from editing a visible predictive suggestion: the bin icon belongs to the shortcut list, while the individual suggestion-removal action takes place in the predictive toolbar.

If the bin icon or another control is not where expected, check that you are on the Text shortcuts screen and not in another keyboard setting. Samsung documents the bin icon at the top right of the shortcut screen. Device and software variations can affect what controls appear, so do not assume a missing edit button means the shortcut cannot be changed at all; use the documented remove-and-recreate workflow if editing in place is unavailable.

Remove an unwanted suggestion in Samsung Keyboard

If the item appears in the predictive toolbar as you type, rather than in the Text shortcuts list, it may be a learned suggestion. Touch and hold that suggestion, then confirm Remove. This removes an individual learned suggestion; it is not the shortcut-list deletion action.

Use this individual removal when one learned word is the problem. The action is intentionally narrower than erasing all personalized prediction data. It also does not remove a configured shortcut from the Text shortcuts list. If a phrase continues to expand after you remove a toolbar suggestion, check the shortcut list separately.

Samsung also provides a broader reset for learned prediction data: open Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions. Use this only if you intend to erase personalized prediction data generally. It is broader than removing one suggestion or one configured shortcut. Choose the individual long-press removal when you only want to address one suggestion; reserve the reset for a wider cleanup.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Keep the scope of the change in mind. The three Samsung actions have different targets: deleting an entry from Text shortcuts removes a configured phrase shortcut; confirming Remove after a long press removes an individual learned suggestion; and Erase personalized predictions clears personalized prediction data more broadly. Picking the matching action helps avoid resetting more than you intended.

Remove a suggestion or add a word in Gboard

Remove one unwanted suggestion

  1. When the unwanted suggestion appears above Gboard, touch and hold it.
  2. Drag it to Bin.

This is Gboard’s documented way to remove an unwanted suggestion. It does not establish that the same gesture edits or deletes a phrase-expansion shortcut. Use it for a suggestion in Gboard’s suggestion area, not as a substitute for a shortcut manager.

If you do not see the suggestion above the keyboard, make sure Gboard is the active keyboard and that you are looking at its suggestion area. If the text is expanding from a short string into a longer phrase, the cited Gboard instructions do not document a phrase-shortcut editor. Check the active keyboard’s settings and avoid applying Samsung’s Text shortcuts path to Gboard.

Add a word to Gboard’s dictionary

  1. Type the word you want Gboard to recognize.
  2. Tap the red-underlined word.
  3. Tap Add to dictionary.

Use this when Gboard marks a word as misspelled but you want to keep it. It adds a word to the dictionary; it does not create a short phrase that expands into longer text. The process starts with the word in a text field, then uses the correction interaction on the underlined word. If the word is not underlined, these documented steps may not match what you are trying to do.

Do not confuse the dictionary action with suggestion removal. Adding a word tells Gboard to recognize that word; removing a suggestion removes an unwanted item from the suggestion area. Neither action is documented here as a way to manage phrase-expansion shortcuts. This distinction is especially useful if a reader says “delete a word” without specifying whether the concern is an underlined spelling, a suggestion, or a phrase that expands.

If the menu or control is missing

  • The keyboard is not Samsung Keyboard or Gboard: Open that keyboard’s settings. Its shortcut and dictionary controls may use different names or steps; the instructions here do not cover every Android keyboard.
  • The Samsung path does not match: Search Android Settings for “Samsung Keyboard” or “Text shortcuts,” or open the keyboard’s gear settings. Samsung documents older alternate paths and warns that some settings may not appear on older devices or operating systems.
  • You see a suggestion but no matching shortcut entry: Treat it as a suggestion or learned prediction, not proof that a phrase shortcut exists. Use the keyboard-specific suggestion controls above.
  • You want to change a shortcut but see no edit action: Samsung’s cited instructions document adding and deleting, not editing an existing entry in place. Remove the old entry and add the corrected one.
  • Gboard’s suggestion controls do not solve the problem: The documented Gboard steps here address suggestions and dictionary words. They do not establish a phrase-shortcut editor, so check the active keyboard’s settings if you are looking for a configured expansion.

When a menu is missing, work from the keyboard app rather than relying on a path found for a different phone. Search Android Settings for “keyboard,” check which input method is active, and open that keyboard’s own settings. This is a way to find the relevant controls without claiming that all manufacturers use the same menu names.

Version differences are another reason the labels may not match exactly. Samsung notes that some options are unavailable on older devices or operating systems and gives alternate paths for older versions. Google notes that some of the Gboard steps apply on Android 7.0 and up. If a control is unavailable, the appropriate next step is to confirm the active keyboard and look for its current settings—not to infer that another keyboard’s instructions should work.

Compare the two workflows by the task

There is no quality ranking implied by these procedures; the relevant difference is what each documented workflow lets you do. For a configured phrase shortcut, Samsung provides a Text shortcuts list with an add flow and a bin-icon deletion flow. The cited Gboard help instead explains how to remove suggestions and add dictionary words, and does not establish phrase-shortcut editing or deletion controls.

For an unwanted learned suggestion, the action is located where the suggestion appears: Samsung uses a long press followed by confirmation of Remove, while Gboard uses a long press and drag to Bin. For a word that should be recognized, Gboard’s documented path is to tap the red-underlined word and choose Add to dictionary. Samsung’s personalized prediction settings are separate from its configured Text shortcuts list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The scope also differs. Removing one suggestion or deleting one configured shortcut is an individual action. Erasing Samsung personalized prediction data is broader. If you only have one unwanted item, use the narrow action that matches it. Consider the broader reset only when clearing personalized prediction data generally is what you want.

Finally, the instructions vary by keyboard version and device. Samsung’s current US path is specific to Samsung Keyboard, and Google’s described controls are specific to Gboard. Neither set of steps should be presented as a universal Android menu. If your keyboard is from another provider, its own settings and support instructions are the relevant place to look.

Choose the smallest change that fixes the problem

For a Samsung phrase that expands incorrectly, change the entry in Text shortcuts by removing and recreating it if an edit option is unavailable. For one learned Samsung prediction, remove that suggestion individually; use the personalized-predictions reset only when a broader cleanup is intended. In Gboard, remove an unwanted toolbar suggestion or add a word to the dictionary according to what you need. Keeping those actions separate prevents a broader prediction reset when only one shortcut or suggestion needs attention.

In short, identify the keyboard, identify the kind of item, and then use that keyboard’s matching control. A configured phrase shortcut, a dictionary word, and a learned suggestion can look related while typing, but they are handled differently. On Samsung, Text shortcuts is the place for configured phrase expansions; on Gboard, the documented steps here address suggestions and dictionary words rather than phrase-shortcut editing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I delete a text shortcut on a Samsung phone?

Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts, then tap the bin icon in the top-right corner of the shortcut screen. Menu names can vary on older devices or operating systems.

Can I edit a Samsung Keyboard shortcut without deleting it?

Samsung’s current support instructions document adding and deleting shortcuts, but do not describe an in-place edit action. If you do not see an edit control, delete the old entry and add it again with the corrected shortcut and expanded phrase.

How do I remove a learned word from Samsung Keyboard?

If it appears as a suggestion in the predictive toolbar, touch and hold it and confirm Remove. This removes an individual learned suggestion; it is different from deleting a configured shortcut.

How do I remove an unwanted Gboard suggestion?

Touch and hold the suggestion above Gboard, then drag it to Bin. This documented action is for a suggestion, not a confirmed phrase-shortcut editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make Gboard recognize a word?

Type the word, tap it when it is red-underlined, and choose Add to dictionary. That adds a dictionary word; it does not create a phrase that expands from a shortcut.

Will resetting Samsung personalized predictions delete one shortcut?

Erasing personalized predictions is a broader reset of learned prediction data, not the same as deleting one configured Text shortcuts entry. Use the shortcut list to remove a phrase shortcut, or the long-press Remove action for an individual learned suggestion.

Why don’t these keyboard settings match my Android phone?

The path depends on the active keyboard, device, and software version. Search Settings for “keyboard,” check which keyboard is active, and open that app’s settings. Third-party keyboards may have different controls.

The Bottom Line

Android shortcut controls depend on the keyboard app and on whether you mean a phrase shortcut, dictionary word, or learned suggestion. Samsung Keyboard’s Text shortcuts list lets you add or delete configured phrases; if no edit action appears, remove and recreate the entry. Gboard’s documented steps here remove suggestions or add dictionary words, not phrase-expansion shortcuts.
