How to Edit and Customize Control Center Controls in macOS Tahoe 26

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control Center in macOS Tahoe 26 is meant to be personal: you can put the toggles you use most right where you want them, and hide the ones you never touch.

This guide walks you through the exact settings path, how to add, remove, and reorder controls, and what to do when the UI doesn’t match your expectations.

Note: Apple sometimes changes wording between builds. If your labels differ slightly, follow the structure and section names, not the exact phrasing.

What Control Center Customization Actually Changes

When you customize Control Center, you’re changing the set of controls shown and their order. You’re not changing the underlying system features (like Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth)—you’re only controlling what appears in the Control Center panel.

Prerequisites and What Can (and Can’t) Be Customized

Before you start, make sure you’re on a macOS Tahoe 26 build that includes Control Center customization. You’ll typically need macOS Tahoe 26 installed and you’ll need access to System Settings.

  • System access: You need to be signed in with an account that can modify system settings.
  • Managed devices: If your Mac is enrolled in an organization (MDM), your admin may restrict Control Center edits.
  • Hardware limits: Some controls depend on whether your Mac supports the feature (for example, Bluetooth or AirPlay/screen mirroring behavior).

In general, you can customize “quick toggles” and “status tiles,” while a few essential elements may remain fixed.

Open the Control Center Settings in macOS Tahoe 26

To change what shows up in Control Center, start from System Settings.

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, find and click Control Center.
  4. Look for a list or panel that shows Controls, Customize Controls, or a similar heading.

If you don’t see a Control Center entry in the sidebar, use the search field at the top of System Settings and type Control Center.

Edit, Add, Remove, and Reorder Controls

Once you’re in the Control Center settings page, you should see a “current” list and an “available” list (or an inline editor that lets you turn items on/off). Use the workflow that matches your UI.

Add a Control

  1. Open System Settings → Control Center.
  2. Find the control you want under Available controls (or a similar list).
  3. Click + next to the control, or toggle it On / Enabled.
  4. Repeat for each control you want to add.

Common controls people add include toggles for Focus, Sound, Display brightness controls, and quick access tiles like Screen Mirroring (wording varies by build).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove a Control

  1. Go to System Settings → Control Center.
  2. In your current controls list, find the control you want to remove.
  3. Click − (or an Remove option), or toggle it Off.
  4. Confirm any prompt if one appears.

If a remove option is missing, the control may be required by macOS Tahoe 26 for your configuration or locked by policy.

Rearrange Controls

  1. Open System Settings → Control Center.
  2. In the current controls list, hover the control you want to move.
  3. Use drag-and-drop to reorder, or use Move Up/Move Down controls if your UI provides them.
  4. Place your most-used items at the left/top so they appear first.

Reordering matters because the Control Center layout can wrap depending on display size, scaling, and the number of enabled controls.

Restore the Default Layout

If you end up with a layout you don’t like, you can usually revert to the default set.

  1. Go to System Settings → Control Center.
  2. Look for Restore Defaults, Reset, or Use Default Controls.
  3. Click it, then confirm.

If you don’t see a reset button, remove controls manually and re-add them—or use the UI’s default template option if available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Per-Control Details and Common Limitations

Not every control behaves the same way. Some controls are true toggles; others are more like “status and quick actions.” Use this table as a practical reference for what’s often customizable and what commonly has constraints.

Control (typical) What it does Common customization behavior
Wi‑Fi Enables/disables and lets you switch networks Often removable or reorderable; some builds keep it available
Bluetooth Enables/disables and manages connections Typically removable; may be required on some setups
Focus Quickly toggles Focus modes Usually customizable; exact options depend on Focus types
Sound Adjusts output and volume Often present; you may be able to add a sound tile
Display / Brightness Changes brightness and related display settings Available on laptops/externals that support it
Screen Mirroring Finds AirPlay-capable targets May appear only when supported targets are relevant

If a control is present but greyed out, it usually indicates a feature is unavailable (for example, hardware state) rather than a customization problem.

How to Verify Your Changes

After you edit controls, verify in the Control Center panel rather than relying on the settings list.

  1. Open Control Center (click the Control Center icon in the menu bar or use the associated keyboard shortcut if your Mac has one).
  2. Confirm the added controls appear.
  3. Check the order: the left/top controls should match your intended sequence.
  4. Remove and re-open Control Center once if the UI seems delayed.

Some controls refresh instantly; others may update after you close and reopen Control Center.

Troubleshooting: Controls Missing, Uneditable, or Not Updating

Most Control Center customization problems fall into a few buckets: delayed UI refresh, missing features, or policy restrictions.

Control Center won’t open or doesn’t reflect changes

  1. Log out and back in (fastest sanity check).
  2. Restart the Mac if it’s still stuck.
  3. Re-check System Settings → Control Center to confirm toggles actually saved.
  4. If you use multiple displays, test with one display connected; layout behavior can differ.

Also confirm you’re editing the right Control Center settings page—macOS sometimes has similarly named controls elsewhere.

You can’t remove a specific control

If the UI won’t let you remove a control, it’s usually by design. Try these steps:

  1. Look for a different setting type (for example, a toggle vs. a “tile” list) in the same page.
  2. Check if the control is part of a required group that can’t be changed.
  3. Try Restore Defaults then re-add only the controls you want.

If removal still fails, it could be enforced by an admin or by the macOS build’s minimum set.

Options are missing after an update

  1. Update the Mac again or apply the latest point release available for macOS Tahoe 26.
  2. Restart your Mac.
  3. Reopen System Settings and search for Control Center to make sure you’re in the right panel.
  4. Confirm features like Bluetooth or Screen Mirroring are supported and enabled on your Mac.

In some releases, Apple renames controls or changes which items show up as “available.”

Permissions, profiles, and managed devices

If your Mac is managed, you may not be able to change Control Center controls at all. Signs include:

  • Controls don’t have remove buttons.
  • Toggle switches are greyed out.
  • The page shows fewer options than expected.

When that happens, contact your organization’s IT admin. The fix isn’t local—policy settings override your customization choices.

  • Put the “stop doing” toggles first: Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Focus, or Screen Mirroring at the start reduces search time.
  • Keep audio controls together: If you add Sound-related tiles, place them near each other to reduce back-and-forth.
  • Limit to what you actually use: Too many tiles cause wrapping; that can make the panel slower to scan.

If your Mac exposes Control Center actions through a keyboard shortcut, check System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts and look for Control Center-related entries.

Comparison: Customizing vs. Using System Settings Shortcuts

Control Center is best for quick toggles and status checks. System Settings is best for deeper configuration.

For example, you might keep Control Center focused on “on/off and selection” (Wi‑Fi, output device, Focus), while reserving System Settings for changing advanced preferences (network profiles, display calibration, or deep audio routing).

Bottom Line

To edit Control Center controls in macOS Tahoe 26, head to System Settings → Control Center, then add, remove, and reorder controls in the available/current lists. Verify changes by opening Control Center and checking both presence and order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If controls are missing or uneditable, restart, update macOS Tahoe 26 to the latest point release, and check whether the Mac is managed by an admin policy.

FAQs

Why can’t I add a control that shows up in tutorials?

It may be unavailable on your Mac hardware, renamed in your macOS Tahoe 26 build, or restricted by a managed-device policy. Try searching within the Control Center settings page and confirm the feature is supported and enabled.

Will my Control Center layout sync across Macs?

That depends on your macOS settings and how Apple links UI preferences. If you don’t see the same layout on another Mac, manually recreate it in each System Settings → Control Center page.

Does rearranging controls affect anything beyond the UI?

No. Reordering only changes what you see and where it appears in Control Center. The underlying system behavior for each feature stays the same.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What’s the fastest way to “fix” a broken layout?

Use Restore Defaults in Control Center settings (if available), restart the Mac if the panel doesn’t refresh, then re-add only the controls you actually use.
