How to Edit a WhatsApp Screenshot (Images, Blur, Annotations, and Sent Messages)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two different things people mean by “edit a WhatsApp screenshot.” If you want to change the picture, open the saved screenshot in your phone or computer’s image editor, crop or annotate it, blur private details, and save a separate copy. If you want to change words in the actual WhatsApp conversation, use WhatsApp’s Edit command on a sent message within 15 minutes. Editing an image never changes the underlying chat.

First decide what you are editing

What you want Correct workflow What changes
Crop, mark up, or redact a saved screenshot Use Photos, Gallery, Preview, or another image editor Only the image file
Add edits to a picture before sending it in WhatsApp Attach the picture, then use WhatsApp’s media editor The copy being sent
Correct a message already sent in a chat Long-press the message and choose Edit within 15 minutes The message text, with an “edited” label

WhatsApp’s official help describes editing photos and videos attached to a message, not changing an existing screenshot in the chat history. Its documented tools include text, stickers, emojis, freehand drawing, filters and blur on supported mobile workflows (WhatsApp Help Center).

Edit a saved WhatsApp screenshot

This is the usual answer when someone asks how to edit a screenshot. The screenshot is a normal PNG, JPEG or other image file, so edit it outside the conversation.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Photos and select the screenshot.
  2. Tap Edit. Use crop or straighten to frame the relevant part. Use the markup tools to draw, add text, or point to an item.
  3. For sensitive information, use a blur or opaque covering tool from an image editor that supports it. A solid, fully opaque block is safer than a translucent marker.
  4. Tap Done, then use Duplicate or export a copy if you need to preserve the original unchanged.
  5. Zoom in on the exported copy and check every edge, name, phone number, avatar and notification before sharing.

If the screenshot is being selected directly from another app for sharing, download it to the device first when you need to edit it before sending. WhatsApp notes that an iPhone photo or video shared directly from another app cannot be edited in WhatsApp’s editor; save it locally, then attach it from Photos.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

On Android

  1. Open Google Photos, your phone’s Gallery, or the image editor supplied by the manufacturer.
  2. Choose Edit and use crop, draw, text, or a redaction/blur tool.
  3. Save as a new copy when the original may be needed later. The exact button can be labeled Save copy, Save as, or Export.
  4. Review the copy at full size before attaching it to WhatsApp or posting it elsewhere.

Menu names vary between Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus and other Android editions. The important distinction is that the editor is operating on the image file, not rewriting WhatsApp’s chat database.

On Windows or macOS

  1. Open the screenshot in Photos, Paint, Preview, or another image editor.
  2. Crop unnecessary messages and use a high-opacity brush, rectangle, or blur to remove private information.
  3. Add labels or arrows only when they clarify what the reader should notice.
  4. Export a separate PNG or JPEG, then reopen it to verify that redactions are not transparent or reversible.

How to blur or redact a WhatsApp screenshot safely

Before sharing, remove details that are not needed for the purpose. Typical examples include names, phone numbers, profile photos, notification previews, unrelated messages, group names and timestamps that reveal more context than you intend.

  • Crop first: remove whole areas when they are irrelevant.
  • Cover second: use an opaque shape for data that must not be visible.
  • Blur only when appropriate: a strong blur can hide casual reading, but weak blur may still reveal shapes or characters.
  • Inspect the exported file: do not assume an overlay was flattened. Try zooming, changing the background, or reopening the file in another viewer.
  • Keep the original private: retain an unaltered copy only when you have a legitimate reason, and label the shared version as edited, annotated, or redacted.

An edited screenshot should not be presented as an untouched record. The official WhatsApp sources explain editing and privacy controls, but they do not provide a forensic test that proves a screenshot is authentic.

Edit a photo or screenshot while attaching it to WhatsApp

When the image is not yet in a chat, WhatsApp’s media composer can add presentation edits before you send it.

Android and iPhone

  1. Open the chat and tap the attachment or camera control.
  2. Select the screenshot or photo.
  3. Use the media toolbar for text, stickers, emojis, freehand drawing, filters and blur where available.
  4. Preview the result, confirm that private details are covered, and send.

This workflow creates an edited version for that outgoing message. It does not alter a screenshot that is already stored in an earlier message. On iPhone, use the local-download step above if the image is coming directly from another app and the editing controls are unavailable.

WhatsApp Web and desktop

WhatsApp documents text and drawing tools for attached photos and videos on the Web workflow (WhatsApp Help Center: Web media editing). Select the file in the chat composer, apply the available tools, review the preview, and send. Treat this as editing media that is about to be sent, not as an in-place screenshot editor.

Correct a WhatsApp message after sending

If the problem is a typo in the conversation rather than the screenshot image, use WhatsApp’s message-editing feature. Meta announced that a sender can edit a message for up to 15 minutes after it was sent (Meta Newsroom, May 22, 2023).

  1. On your phone, press and hold the sent message. On supported desktop or Web clients, open the message’s menu.
  2. Choose Edit.
  3. Correct the text and confirm.

The message is marked as edited. After the 15-minute window, the practical choices are to send a correction or clarification, or to make a separate annotated image; changing a screenshot will not change what other participants saw in the chat.

Privacy limits you should understand

WhatsApp says personal messages, calls, photos and videos are protected with end-to-end encryption (WhatsApp Privacy). That protects transmission, not every copy a participant can make after content appears on a screen.

Advanced Chat Privacy can limit automatic media saving and chat export when enabled for a chat, according to WhatsApp’s help page (About advanced chat privacy). It is a chat setting, not a promise that nobody can photograph a screen, manually reproduce visible text, or share an existing copy.

WhatsApp also announced screenshot blocking for View Once messages (Meta Newsroom, August 9, 2022). That statement is specific to View Once content; do not generalize it to ordinary chat screenshots.

Common problems and fixes

The blur can still be read

Undo it and use a larger, fully opaque block or crop the information out. Export, close and reopen the file, then inspect it at 200–400% zoom.

My edits disappeared after sharing

Check that you sent the edited copy rather than the original screenshot. In the picker, compare the file name or thumbnail, and reopen the outgoing attachment after sending.

I cannot find Edit on a sent message

Confirm that you are the sender and that less than 15 minutes have passed. The feature edits message text, not an image already posted in the chat; update WhatsApp if the option is missing and your account has not received the feature yet.

The iPhone editor has no tools

If the image was shared directly from another app, save it to Photos first, then attach it from WhatsApp’s picker. WhatsApp’s iPhone help specifically distinguishes that path.

The screenshot looks authentic after editing

That is why you should label annotations and redactions clearly. Preserve the original privately when appropriate, and never imply that an altered image is an untouched record.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a fresh webpage image rather than edit a WhatsApp chat image, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Here is a complete cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

You can request PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; full-page captures load lazy images, and options include CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. The parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start.
