If you want to change a Codex plan yourself, OpenAI Support’s documented workaround is to save the plan as a file and edit that copy. If you want Codex to rethink or revise the plan, ask it to make the changes. Support described these options on September 8, 2026, and said it had no timeline for a directly editable Plan-mode document.
Choose between a Codex revision and editing a file
The right option depends on whether you want model-assisted reconsideration or direct control over the plan’s wording and structure.

How to edit the plan yourself
- Save the plan as a file. Preserve the proposed plan’s text in a file you can edit. OpenAI Support suggested saving it but did not specify a particular file format or export control.
- Make your changes in the file. Revise the sections, wording, and level of detail directly, rather than asking Codex to rewrite them.
- Keep the edited copy available as you continue. The cited guidance does not establish whether changes to that file update a plan already open in Codex, or specify a re-import or handoff procedure. Treat the file and the active session as separate unless your client provides a documented way to connect them.
Why a Plan-mode plan may not act like an editable document
The official Codex plan-mode template describes planning as conversational and presents the resulting plan in a <proposed_plan> block. That format helps explain why a rendered plan may not behave like a conventional document editor, but it does not establish how every Codex client displays plans or whether a particular version offers an editing control.

What OpenAI has said about direct editing
In a September 8, 2026 reply in the OpenAI Developer Community, OpenAI Support suggested asking Codex to revise the plan or saving it as a file to edit. Support said a directly editable Plan-mode document would be more convenient, that it would pass the request along, and that it had no timeline to share. This describes Support’s answer at that time; it does not establish the current availability of editing controls across Codex clients or versions.

The official Codex plan-mode template describes the conversational process and proposed-plan format. It does not document an in-place editing control or synchronization from a saved file back to an active session.
