You can earn money from a website through display ads, affiliate links, physical or digital products, subscriptions, or coaching. The best fit depends on your subject, what your visitors need, and the work you can take on. None of these models guarantees income: even Google says AdSense earnings vary and its estimates are not promises.

Choose a revenue model that fits your website

Before adding monetization, decide what the site is for and who it serves. A useful model has a natural connection between the audience and the offer; unrelated ads or products can weaken trust without creating a reliable income stream.

Model How it earns Fit and trade-offs
Display ads Make space available for advertisements through a publisher service such as AdSense. Can suit an original content site, but earnings vary with advertiser prices and other factors. It is not a guaranteed income source. Google explains how AdSense works.
Affiliate marketing Recommend relevant products or services; a commission may be earned if a referred reader buys. Works most naturally when readers seek recommendations related to the site’s subject. A travel site recommending gear it discusses is a more coherent fit than inserting unrelated links. Google’s guide to making money from blogging describes this model.
Physical products Sell relevant goods through an online store. Requires attention to inventory, shipping, and applicable taxes and duties. Google’s guide notes these operational considerations.
Digital products Sell downloadable or electronically delivered products. Electronic delivery can be less complex than handling physical stock, though the product still needs to meet an audience need. Google’s guide includes digital goods as an option.
Memberships or subscriptions Charge a recurring fee for premium content, community, learning resources, videos, tools, or services. May suit a site with an engaged community. There is no universal audience-size threshold that guarantees a subscription will work. Google’s guide presents it as one possible model.
Coaching Offer coaching through the site. Consider it when you have a suitable service and the audience wants that help. Naming the model does not establish expected earnings. Google’s guide includes coaching among the options.

Compare options by audience fit, whether you have a relevant product or service, the operational work involved, and how uncertain the revenue is. The right choice may be one model or a combination; there is no universal best model or required order.

How AdSense works—and what it does not promise

AdSense is a publisher service: a website owner makes ad space available and adds ad code, while Google matches ads to the site’s content and visitors. Advertisers bid for that space, and Google handles billing and payments. Google says publishers can be paid for clicks or impressions on displayed ads, but that description is not a promise of approval, traffic, or a particular amount of income. See Google’s explanation of AdSense.

Google’s AdSense page offers an earnings estimate, but explicitly says the estimate is not a guarantee or commitment. It identifies factors including content category, advertiser demand, visitors’ location and device, seasonality, ad format and size, number of ads, and currency exchange rates. Because the outcome depends on those variables, a projected figure should not be treated as typical earnings for a new site.

Do not confuse monetizing a site with buying promotion for a business. Google Ads is for advertisers promoting products or services; AdSense is for publishers seeking to earn from space on their properties.

What you need before applying to AdSense

Google’s AdSense getting-started guidance identifies these setup and eligibility considerations:

  • Original content created from scratch that you own.
  • Compliance with the AdSense program policies.
  • A Google Account.
  • A valid phone number and postal address for setup and payments.

Review Google’s current eligibility terms and policies before applying; program requirements can change. Approval and subsequent earnings are separate issues: meeting listed requirements does not itself guarantee acceptance, visitors, or income.

A practical order for building toward revenue

  1. Define the subject and audience. Be specific about what the site covers and what readers come to solve or learn.
  2. Choose a fitting revenue model. Decide whether ads, relevant recommendations, a product, a membership, or a service makes sense for that audience and for the work you can handle.
  3. Create useful original content or a relevant offer. For AdSense, Google specifically requires original content you own and compliance with its policies. Other models also depend on having something relevant to recommend or sell.
  4. Set up the appropriate platform or program. If you plan to use AdSense, follow its current setup guidance and eligibility rules. If selling or recommending products, check the applicable platform and program terms directly rather than assuming a provider or commission arrangement.
  5. Assess results without assuming a guaranteed return. Traffic, audience response, advertiser demand, and purchases can differ. Treat estimates as estimates, and adjust the model based on how visitors actually use the site.

This is a practical sequence, not a promise of results. The available guidance does not establish comparative earnings across models, success rates, or tax and legal obligations for every jurisdiction; check local requirements where relevant.
