You can earn Mega Energy in Pokémon Go without raids by completing eligible research tasks or, occasionally, walking with a Buddy Pokémon from an evolutionary line in which you have already Mega Evolved a Pokémon. Research tasks are the more predictable option when one offering the energy you need is available; Buddy walking has a prerequisite and no guaranteed amount or distance. Mega Energy is tied to its Pokémon species, so check that the reward matches the Pokémon—and Mega form—you want to use it on.
Two raid-free ways to earn Mega Energy
Niantic documents two ways to collect Mega Energy without joining a Mega Raid: complete specific research tasks or walk with a qualifying Buddy. The routes differ in availability and predictability, but both require you to pay attention to which Pokémon’s energy you are collecting. Niantic’s Mega Energy guidance describes both methods.

| Method | What you need | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Research tasks | A currently available task that lists the relevant Mega Energy as a reward | The task’s reward is specified in game; task availability can change |
| Buddy walking | A Buddy in an evolutionary line that includes a Pokémon you have previously Mega Evolved | Mega Energy may be awarded occasionally; Niantic does not give a guaranteed amount or fixed walking distance |
In practical terms, research is conditional on what tasks are available at the time, while Buddy walking is conditional on your Mega Evolution history. A research task lets you inspect its listed reward before deciding whether to pursue it. Buddy walking can remain an option once you meet the prerequisite, but the official guidance calls the reward occasional and does not say when it will arrive. Neither route provides a universal pool of Mega Energy: the species and, for Pokémon with multiple forms, the form still matter.

Open the in-game Research tab and look at the rewards for available tasks. Choose a task only if its reward explicitly shows Mega Energy for the species you are trying to Mega Evolve. Niantic confirms research tasks as a way to earn Mega Energy, but its general guidance does not provide a standing list of task names or rewards. That means a task mentioned in an old guide may no longer be available; verify the reward in your game instead of relying on a remembered task or an outdated list.

Research is the clearer route when a suitable reward is currently offered: you can see what the task pays before deciding whether to complete it. The available tasks and rewards may vary over time, so there is no evergreen task or reward amount to rely on. If none of your current tasks offers the energy you need, try the Buddy route if you meet its prerequisite.
Use the reward shown for the task as your guide rather than assuming that any research reward will help with Mega Evolution. A task may be useful for another reason but does not meet this specific goal unless it lists the Mega Energy you need. Also distinguish a task that gives Mega Energy from one that gives a different reward: completing research in general is not itself a guarantee of Mega Energy.
There is no reliable permanent task checklist to copy from an older article. The active task selection can change, and Niantic’s general collecting instructions do not name current tasks or promise a particular reward quantity. If you cannot find the right energy listed in your current research, that means the research route is not presently confirmed for that target in your game; it does not mean you can substitute another species’ energy.
Earn Mega Energy by walking with a Buddy
Buddy walking can produce Mega Energy, but it is conditional and occasional—not a guaranteed payout for every walk or a known amount for a fixed distance. Before choosing a Buddy, check its evolutionary line: you must have previously Mega Evolved a Pokémon in that line. Niantic’s help page does not state a fixed distance threshold or a set amount of energy for this reward. The official collecting guidance describes it as an occasional reward.
- Identify the energy you need. Note the Pokémon species and, where relevant, the Mega form you intend to use.
- Check the prerequisite. You must previously have Mega Evolved a Pokémon in the evolutionary line of the Buddy you plan to walk.
- Select a Buddy from that line. If no Pokémon in the line has been Mega Evolved before, the walking method does not meet Niantic’s stated condition.
- Walk with that Buddy and check your Mega Energy total. Treat any energy as an occasional reward; the official guidance does not promise when it will arrive or how much you will receive.
The prior Mega Evolution is the key eligibility check. Simply choosing a Buddy whose species can Mega Evolve is not enough if no Pokémon in its evolutionary line has been Mega Evolved before. Conversely, the condition is described in terms of the Buddy’s evolutionary line, not a promise of energy for every walk. Do not assume that changing to a qualifying Buddy guarantees an immediate payout.
Walking is therefore a continuing option once you have met the prerequisite, but it is not a dependable way to predict how soon you will reach a target. If you need energy for a different species, choose a qualifying Buddy from that species’ line rather than assuming energy can be redirected afterward. When the reward does not arrive on a particular walk, Niantic’s guidance gives no fixed distance or schedule you can use to calculate the next one.

That makes the two methods useful in different circumstances. A research task is easier to evaluate in advance because its listed reward tells you what you will receive if you complete it, but the right task may not be available. Buddy walking is not tied to a currently listed research reward, but it has a prior-Mega-Evolution requirement and an uncertain yield. If you are deciding where to focus, first check research for the exact energy, then check whether you have unlocked the Buddy condition for that same target.

Mega Energy is not a universal currency. Energy for one Pokémon species cannot be transferred to another, so a large balance for one species does not help with a different species’ Mega Evolution. Check the species named on a research reward and make sure the Buddy route relates to the line you are targeting.
This is worth checking before you invest effort in either route. A reward for one species cannot be saved and repurposed later for another, and a Buddy from an unrelated line is not a substitute for a qualifying Buddy tied to your target. Treat the energy label as part of the requirement, not as a detail you can sort out after collecting it.
Some Pokémon have more than one Mega form, and energy progress for one form does not automatically cover the other. Charizard, for example, has Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y. Niantic’s guidance treats the forms separately: if you want the other form, you must Mega Evolve it at its full cost before that form’s future cost can be reduced. See Niantic’s Mega Evolution guidance for the form and cost rules.
For Charizard, therefore, progress with one selected form should not be mistaken for progress with the other. If your goal is Mega Charizard Y, having Mega Evolved Mega Charizard X does not establish the reduced future cost for Y. Check which form you intend to use before spending the energy you have collected, especially if you are choosing between research rewards or tracking a species-specific balance.

The first Mega Evolution is per individual Pokémon
Each individual Pokémon needs Mega Energy for its first Mega Evolution. Mega Evolving one Pokémon of a species does not unlock a different individual of the same species for free. If you have two Pokémon of the same species, each must make its own first Mega Evolution. Niantic explains the initial Mega Evolution requirement.

This distinction helps set a realistic energy target. Evolving one individual does not pay the first-use cost for every other individual you own, even when they share a species. If your plan is to Mega Evolve a particular Pokémon, collect and spend energy with that individual’s first Mega Evolution in mind; another individual’s earlier Mega Evolution does not remove the initial requirement.
Later Mega Evolutions can be energy-free after rest
Once an individual Pokémon has Mega Evolved, it can Mega Evolve again without spending energy after its rest period ends. That rest period can last up to several days; it is not one fixed duration for every situation. Repeated Mega Evolutions also reduce the energy cost over time. The Mega form itself lasts eight hours before the Pokémon returns to normal. Niantic describes the rest-period and repeat-use rules. Its Mega Evolution page covers the form’s duration and cost.
Niantic describes the initial Mega Evolution cost as significant, and costs can differ by species. The general help guidance does not give one universal price to apply to every Pokémon. Repeated Mega Evolutions reduce the cost over time, and the energy-free repeat becomes available after the Pokémon’s rest period ends. For that reason, it is more useful to think of your first Mega Evolution as the main energy hurdle for that individual than to expect every future use to require the same amount.
The eight-hour Mega form and the rest period are different parts of the cycle. The form ends after eight hours and the Pokémon returns to normal; the later energy-free re-use depends on its rest period ending. The stated rest period can last up to several days, so do not treat eight hours as a promise that the Pokémon will be ready for a free Mega Evolution immediately afterward.
This is why earning enough energy for an individual Pokémon’s first Mega Evolution matters: afterward, waiting for its rest period can let you reuse that Pokémon without paying energy again. However, do not assume that every later progression step is free. Mega Levels rise as an individual is Mega Evolved more often and do not reset when its Mega form ends; reaching Super Max Level requires spending Mega Energy. Niantic’s Mega Level guidance explains that progression.
In other words, energy-free repeat Mega Evolution after rest is not the same as energy-free Mega Level progression. A Pokémon’s level progress remains when its form ends, but Niantic specifically notes that reaching Super Max Level requires energy. Keep those goals separate when deciding whether to save energy for another individual’s first Mega Evolution or use it toward further progression.

Special case: Rayquaza needs more than Mega Energy
Rayquaza has an additional Mega Evolution requirement: it needs a Meteorite and the Charged Attack Dragon Ascent. Niantic says a Meteorite can be obtained through Special Research. This is a separate requirement from collecting Mega Energy, so earning the energy alone does not satisfy everything Rayquaza needs to Mega Evolve. Check Niantic’s Mega Evolution instructions for the requirement.

This exception does not change the two raid-free Mega Energy routes. It means that a player targeting Rayquaza should treat Mega Energy and the Meteorite/Dragon Ascent requirement as separate pieces of preparation. A Special Research route for a Meteorite is not itself a general guarantee of Mega Energy, and collecting Mega Energy does not replace the required Meteorite or Charged Attack.
When a Mega Raid is the alternative
Mega Raids also award Mega Energy, with the amount depending on how quickly the raid boss is defeated. That is a separate route from the two raid-free methods above. If avoiding raids is your goal, concentrate on current research rewards and qualifying Buddy walking rather than treating raid rewards as part of either method. Niantic’s Mega Raid guidance describes the raid reward relationship.
A quick decision guide
Start with the Pokémon you actually want to Mega Evolve, not with the amount of energy shown for another species. Check whether the target has one Mega form or separate X/Y forms, then look for a current research task whose reward explicitly matches the needed energy. If you find one, the task’s listed reward is the clearest way to know what you can earn by completing it.
If no matching task is available, check the Buddy prerequisite. Choose a Buddy from the target’s evolutionary line only if a Pokémon in that line has previously Mega Evolved. Then treat walking as a chance to receive Mega Energy, not a fixed-rate exchange of distance for energy. If the prerequisite is not met, Buddy walking is not a supported solution yet; the documented condition must be fulfilled first.

Finally, set the right goal. If this is the first Mega Evolution for an individual Pokémon, that individual needs energy even if you have Mega Evolved another member of the same species. If the individual has already Mega Evolved, it may later Mega Evolve without spending energy after its rest period ends, while repeated uses reduce the cost over time. For X/Y Pokémon, keep each form’s progress distinct; for Rayquaza, remember the Meteorite and Dragon Ascent requirement too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you get Mega Energy from walking your Buddy?
Yes, occasionally. Niantic says Buddy walking can award Mega Energy when the Buddy’s evolutionary line includes a Pokémon you have previously Mega Evolved. The guidance does not promise a fixed amount or walking distance.
Do you need to Mega Evolve a Pokémon first to get Mega Energy from walking?
Yes. You must previously have Mega Evolved a Pokémon in the evolutionary line of the Buddy you plan to walk. Choosing a Buddy from an eligible species line without meeting that prerequisite is not enough.
Can I use another Pokémon’s Mega Energy?
No. Mega Energy is species-specific and cannot be transferred to a different species. If a Pokémon has separate X and Y Mega forms, energy and cost progress for one form do not automatically cover the other.
What research tasks give Mega Energy right now?
Check the rewards in your in-game Research tab. Niantic confirms specific research tasks as a way to earn Mega Energy, but its general collecting guidance does not maintain a current task list or reward schedule.
Does every Buddy walk give Mega Energy, or is there a fixed distance?
No fixed distance or guaranteed payout is stated in Niantic’s guidance. It describes Buddy Mega Energy as an occasional reward, so you cannot calculate a guaranteed amount from a set walking distance.
Does Mega Evolving one Pokémon make another of the same species free to Mega Evolve?
No. Each individual Pokémon needs Mega Energy for its own first Mega Evolution. After that individual has Mega Evolved, it can Mega Evolve again without energy after its rest period ends.
How long does a Mega Evolution last, and when can I repeat it for free?
The Mega form lasts eight hours before the Pokémon returns to normal. After its rest period ends—which can last up to several days—the same individual can Mega Evolve again without spending energy.

No. Rayquaza also needs a Meteorite and the Charged Attack Dragon Ascent. Niantic says a Meteorite can be obtained through Special Research.
The Bottom Line
To earn Mega Energy without raids, check current research rewards for the exact species and form you need, or walk with a Buddy from a line in which you have already Mega Evolved a Pokémon. Research rewards are task-specific; Buddy rewards are occasional, with no fixed distance or amount promised. Energy is not transferable between species, and each individual Pokémon needs energy for its first Mega Evolution, even though later re-use can be free after rest.
