There is no universal PlayStation 2 security-chip dumper. First identify the console’s exact MechaCon chip and version, then use documentation for that chip family: MechaDump documents a Dragon-family route, while SPC970-MechaLIBerator supports specified pre-Dragon SPC970 layouts. Neither should be treated as a risk-free read-only operation: both involve patching or writing console state, and both require you to preserve recovery data and follow their restoration instructions.
What the PS2 “security chip” is
The chip commonly meant by this phrase is MechaCon, short for mechanics controller. It controls optical-drive mechanics and is also associated with disc security, MagicGate, and KELF decryption, as described in the PS2 Developer Wiki’s MechaCon reference. Dumping its firmware is a hardware-specific preservation task, not a generic console backup procedure.

Start by recording the console’s SCPH model, chassis or board information if known, and the complete MechaCon model and version. PS2Ident can collect hardware identification data and console ROM and MechaCon NVRAM dumps. Its documentation cautions that the reported model identification can be incomplete or inaccurate even when chip and version IDs read from hardware are accurate. Keep the full chip and version identifiers; a shortened family label may not be enough to choose a supported method.

Choose a method by chip family and exact support
These tools are not interchangeable. A console model that looks similar to one in a support list is not proof that its chip layout is supported. Check the tool’s current README against the exact hardware identity and, for SPC970, the documented configuration layout before running anything.

|---|---|---|
| MechaDump | Dragon-family support is documented for SCPH-500xx, all slim systems, and PSX systems (MechaDump project documentation). | The project describes installing a hook and warns that a failure can brick the console. Its procedure includes restoring EEPROM after the ROM dump; the project says not to leave the back-door state active (MechaDump project documentation). |
| SPC970-MechaLIBerator | Documents a dumper for the 256 KiB pre-Dragon SPC970 ROM window and specific layouts keyed to observed configuration bytes. Listed examples include SCPH-18000 and CXP102064-era consoles, and identified CXP103049 markers including SCPH-39001 (SPC970-MechaLIBerator project documentation). | Low-level MechaCon and NVRAM writes can corrupt console data or prevent normal operation on unsupported hardware or after interruption or storage/software failure. The project provides baseline and recovery artifacts, but says some power-loss and USB-failure handling still needs real-hardware confirmation (SPC970-MechaLIBerator project documentation). |
A September 2026 update to the PS2 Developer Wiki points to a newly discovered SPC970 firmware-dumping method except for version 1. That finding does not establish support for every SPC970 variant: use the dumper’s own layout list and observed configuration data, not an inference from a nearby SCPH model.
Before you run a dumper
- Record identity. Save the SCPH model, board or chassis details if available, full MechaCon model and version, and the identification tool used. Keep this information with every dump.
- Read the matching project instructions in full. Confirm the exact supported family or layout and required hook, media, storage, and recovery sequence. Do not adapt a procedure from the other chip family.
- Prepare a preservation copy. Have writable USB storage available for SPC970-MechaLIBerator, which requires it; the project does not specify a required capacity or guarantee a particular USB device. Plan to retain all generated files rather than just the ROM image.
- Keep the console stable during writes. Do not reset, remove storage, or cut power while an operation is active. The SPC970 project warns that interruption can corrupt console state; for MechaDump, follow its documented full-power removal and restoration sequence rather than improvising.
Dragon-family systems: follow MechaDump’s complete sequence
MechaDump describes dumping ROM after installing a hook and fully removing power so MechaCon reloads the patch state. The project documents two hook options, with different prerequisites and risk trade-offs:

- DualShock Controller
- DVD playback
- Digital surround sound
- 2 memory card slots
- Disc-protection hook: MechaDump characterizes this as the safer option, but it requires a legitimate regional disc and a working drive.
- IRQ hook: The project says this has broader prerequisites but is more dangerous. Do not interpret “broader” as universal compatibility or a safety guarantee.
These are the project’s own descriptions, not an independent assurance that either route is safe on a particular console. Its warning is explicit: a failed run can brick the console and may require soldering and a Raspberry Pi for recovery. Use the current MechaDump README for its exact supported procedure; do not invent a workaround if a run fails or is interrupted.

MechaDump says the documented sequence then powers the system down automatically. Do not leave the console in the back-door state: according to the project, that state disables factory patches and could cause reliability problems.

SPC970 systems: preserve the capture and recovery set
SPC970-MechaLIBerator is a homebrew application for its documented pre-Dragon SPC970 layouts. Its workflow writes low-level MechaCon and NVRAM state, so compatibility and uninterrupted operation matter. The project’s instructions call for removing any disc, closing the tray, and letting the drive stop; attaching writable USB storage; completing the initial capture; confirming the on-screen write prompt; and waiting for the operation to finish. Follow the current project instructions in their stated order.
The initial capture includes a full 1,024-byte NVRAM image, a raw configuration window, and capture details with CRC32 values. The application creates numbered captures and uses saved baselines and verified chunk records for recovery. Preserve the complete SPC970/ directory, including the original capture, session files, and verification artifacts; do not separate or delete files that the project uses to match a session or restore a baseline.

The project warns that unsupported hardware, storage or software failures, and interruptions can corrupt console data or leave the PS2 unable to operate normally. It also notes that handling of some power-loss, interrupted USB-write, and USB-capacity failure scenarios still needs confirmation on real hardware. Do not assume that a recovery artifact guarantees recovery from every failure.

Restoration is not an optional cleanup step. For Dragon systems, finish MechaDump’s EEPROM restore and allow its documented shutdown behavior to complete. For SPC970 systems, use the project’s NVRAM restore or recovery flow and retain the files it uses to verify the baseline. If a write was interrupted or the tool reports an error, stop and consult the relevant project’s recovery instructions; do not repeatedly rerun the dumper or guess at a repair sequence.

Inspect the dump without losing its context
Keep an untouched copy of each raw output. Alongside it, record the console and MechaCon identity, tool name and version, capture/session files, and any checksums or reports generated by the tool. For SPC970 captures, keep the configuration window, NVRAM image, CRC32 details, and recovery records together.
These project documents establish acquisition and recovery procedures, not a universal method for interpreting firmware bytes. A byte difference between two files does not by itself prove a security feature, hardware fault, or meaningful firmware change. Comparisons are only useful when the chip identities, capture methods, and relevant metadata are known; preserve the original files so later analysis does not depend on a modified copy.
