How to Dry and Store Water-Damaged Books Safely

Wet books need gentle handling and prompt action. Use absorbent interleaving and airflow for a small batch, freeze books if drying must wait, and store only when fully dry.

Support wet books and dry them promptly: handle them with their covers and pages fully supported, then use absorbent interleaving and circulating air for a small batch. If you cannot begin air-drying within two days, the Library of Congress advises preparing and freezing newly wet or moldy books until you can work on them. Keep books exposed to sewage or other hazards, actively moldy items, and rare or valuable volumes out of routine home cleanup.

First, make the area safe and triage the books

Do not enter an unsafe or contaminated area to rescue books. If floodwater may contain sewage or other hazards, treat the cleanup as a health issue and seek qualified advice rather than handling the books as ordinary wet paper.

Once it is safe, separate unaffected books and sort damaged ones by severity, replaceability, and value. Wet paper tears and bends easily. Support a closed book beneath its full cover and pages; do not lift it by the cover, spine, or inner pages, and do not let it sag. The National Park Service’s wet-book guidance recommends professional help for rare or valuable volumes, substantial active mold, contaminated floodwater, or losses too large to manage safely. It says several or dozens of books may be handled in-house, while thousands are better suited to a recovery company.

If a book is muddy

For mud on a book that is otherwise safe to handle, the NPS advises holding it tightly closed and rinsing the exterior with clean water. Then gently press it between towels or blotters, or blot away excess moisture. Do not scrub or fan muddy pages apart.

Air-dry a small batch without forcing pages

For books that can be dried promptly, prepare a clean work surface protected with plastic and absorbent towels. Keep air circulating in the room; use a dehumidifier if available. Do not point heat at the books or force them wide open: the NPS cautions that forcing a book open can damage its spine.

  1. Support each book. Keep a closed book fully supported so its cover and pages do not bend.
  2. Interleave absorbent sheets. For a small batch, lay a book on its side and place paper towels or unprinted newspaper between sections of about 20–30 pages, following the NPS method. If a book cannot stand upright later, leave it on its side and place blotters between every few pages.
  3. Stand books only if they can hold their shape. Place damp, interleaved books upright on absorbent towels, with pages fanned slightly. Do not force a book to stay open or upright if it will bend or collapse.
  4. Replace saturated sheets regularly. Swap wet interleaving for clean, dry material. When changing sheets, reverse the book’s head-to-tail orientation to help drying proceed evenly.
  5. Check frequently. Continue replacing damp sheets and keep air moving until the book is dry throughout, not merely dry to the touch on the covers.

The NPS says mold may begin growing when objects remain damp for approximately 72 hours. That is an urgency warning, not a guaranteed safe window: dry books promptly, and freeze them if prompt drying is not feasible.

Freeze books if drying must wait

The Library of Congress recommends immediate air-drying where possible and preparing and freezing newly wet or moldy books if they cannot be air-dried within two days. The NPS describes freezing as a way to stabilize wet books until drying can begin; freezing is a holding step, not a drying treatment.

  1. Gently shape the book. While supporting it, arrange it as close to its normal closed shape as its condition allows.
  2. Protect the cover and spine. Wrap them in wax paper, freezer paper, paper towels, or unprinted newspaper so wet covers do not stick together in the freezer.
  3. Freeze until you can work in small batches. Keep frozen books contained and seek professional recovery advice for valuable items, active mold, hazardous contamination, or a large collection.

NEDCC search-result guidance says wet books contaminated by rust, mud, or salt water should be rinsed before freezing. Its search-result material also describes vacuum freeze-drying as a recovery-vendor method for wet books, coated paper, and water-sensitive inks. Direct access to the NEDCC pages was unavailable, so treat those details as referral guidance and verify the method with a qualified conservator or recovery service before acting on a contaminated or valuable collection. NEDCC’s pages are Emergency Salvage of Wet Books and Records and Freezing and Drying Wet Books and Records.

Choose professional drying for collections or difficult materials

For a large loss, the practical choices depend on labor and freezer capacity, paper type (especially coated stock), the book’s rarity, vendor availability and cost, expected distortion, and effects on paper permanence. The NPS’s 2008 study compared treatments using surrogate books and paper samples; it does not predict exactly what will happen to an individual volume.

Method What the NPS study found Practical trade-off noted
Air drying Essentially no deleterious effect on mechanical strength in the tested samples Labor intensive; books can distort
Vacuum freeze-drying Essentially no deleterious effect on mechanical strength in the tested samples Useful for large quantities and coated stock
Vacuum packing Essentially no deleterious effect on mechanical strength in the tested samples Specific trade-offs not stated in the NPS summary
Vacme press with Zorbix Essentially no deleterious effect on mechanical strength in the tested samples Pressing during drying can reduce distortion
Thermal drying Reduced paper mechanical strength by 15 percent in the tested samples Result applies to the study’s materials and conditions
Gamma irradiation Weakened comparable paper by 25 percent in the tested samples Result applies to the study’s materials and conditions

The study also cautions that a book looking flat does not prove its paper is undamaged. These findings are specific to the tested materials and methods, not a guarantee for every book. Read the NPS study, Comparing Mass Drying and Sterilization Protocols for Water-Damaged Books, for its experimental context.

Store books only after they are dry

Do not seal damp books in boxes or plastic containers. For long-term storage, the Library of Congress recommends acid- and lignin-free boxes. Store books somewhere with stable temperature and humidity, away from basements, attics, and garages, where conditions are poorly controlled and leaks or floods are more likely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Polyethylene or polypropylene containers can add protection from water, but a plastic container in a high-humidity area can increase mold risk. Use plastic only where the surrounding environment is suitably dry, and check stored books regularly. The Library of Congress covers these precautions in its Books preservation FAQ.

What to do about mold stains and musty odor

For books with mold stains but no active growth, the Library of Congress recommends keeping ambient relative humidity between 40% and 65% and checking the books regularly. This guidance is for stained items without active mold; active growth is a separate cleanup and safety problem that warrants qualified advice.

For a musty odor, the Library of Congress says odor may decrease over time with air circulation or exposure in a cool environment at 35%–55% relative humidity. Activated charcoal or baking soda may be placed in a closed container with the book, but not in contact with it; check regularly for mold. Odor control does not resolve active mold. See the Library of Congress guidance on mold stains and musty odor.
