Give large trucks room, stay out of their blind spots, and pass only when you can complete the maneuver safely and legally. For U.S. passenger-car drivers, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) offers a useful mirror rule: “If you can’t see a truck or bus driver’s face in their mirror, they can’t see you.” Treat it as a warning not to linger alongside a truck—not proof that a mirror check reveals every place the driver can see.
Stay out of a truck’s blind spots
A truck’s size creates areas around it where the driver may not see a nearby car. Avoid riding beside a truck, especially when traffic is moving slowly. Either move ahead when it is safe or fall back until you are clearly behind it.

Leave more room behind and when merging
Do not follow a truck closely. A longer gap gives you more time to react and helps preserve visibility around the vehicle. When merging in front of a truck, leave a generous space rather than cutting in and forcing the driver to brake.

FMCSA illustrates the difference in stopping distance with a loaded tractor-trailer traveling at 55 mph in ideal conditions: it reports 196 feet, compared with 133 feet for a passenger vehicle. These are illustrative figures, not a prediction for every truck, car, or road. Stopping distance changes with conditions, so increase your space in poor weather, on difficult roads, when visibility is limited, or in dense traffic. Pass only when you can finish safely
Before passing, check that the maneuver is legal, the proper passing lane is available, and there is enough clear road to complete it. Signal, pass decisively without lingering beside the truck, and do not pass a truck on a downgrade where it may pick up speed.

After passing, do not pull back in close. Wait until you can see the truck in your rearview mirror, then return to the lane with room between your car and the truck. If you cannot complete the pass while maintaining that space, wait for a better opportunity. Local signs and laws determine where passing is permitted. FMCSA: Talking Points.
Give turning trucks room
A large truck may need extra space to turn and may move left before making a right turn. Do not assume that the gap beside it is an invitation to pass or squeeze through. Stay back and wait for the truck to complete its turn, rather than entering the space between the truck and the curb. Pennsylvania DOT: Heavy Trucks.

Leave space when stopped behind a truck
Do not stop close behind a truck. A truck stopped on an incline may roll backward, and in a collision a passenger vehicle may be vulnerable to sliding beneath a higher truck. Leave room rather than crowding its rear.

There is no single following distance or stopping figure that suits every situation. Build a larger buffer when weather, road surface, visibility, or traffic makes it harder to see trouble or stop in time.
