How to drive car in Google earth?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When most people search for how to drive car in Google Earth, they’re trying to either (1) follow a real driving route step-by-step, or (2) “drive” through a location using Street View controls. Google Earth itself isn’t a physics-based car simulator, so the best method depends on what you want the experience to do.

This guide covers every practical way to get a driving-like experience: routing in Google Maps, moving through Street View as if you’re behind the wheel, and building/replaying routes in Google Earth Pro. You’ll also find troubleshooting steps for the common “why can’t I control it like a car?” issues.

What people usually mean by driving a car in Google Earth

There are three common goals behind the same search phrase:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Follow a navigation route between two places (turn-by-turn driving directions).
  • Explore the road visually along a street using Street View (drag forward, turn, and look around).
  • Replay a custom route inside Google Earth (create a path, then travel along it).

If you tell yourself which goal you have, the correct tool becomes obvious. Routing uses Google Maps; “driving through streets” uses Street View; custom replay uses Google Earth Pro.

Before you start: prerequisites and expectations

  • Use the right app: Google Earth is for 3D viewing; Google Maps is for driving directions; Street View is for road-level navigation.
  • Sign in if needed: Google Earth Pro desktop can be more capable when logged into your Google account, but most viewing works without it.
  • Street View availability matters: Some areas have limited imagery or no drivable Street View coverage, which affects whether you can “move like a driver.”
  • Controls differ by platform: Desktop mouse/keyboard behaves differently than touch controls on iPhone/iPad/Android.

Method 1: Follow driving routes in Google Maps (recommended)

If your goal is to drive from A to B, turn-by-turn directions is the closest match to what people expect from “car driving.” Google Maps handles this better than Google Earth.

Google Maps on web (desktop browser)

  1. Open Google Maps in your browser.
  2. Enter your Start location in the left search box.
  3. Enter your Destination location in the second box.
  4. Click the Directions mode selector (usually shows a car icon) and choose Driving.
  5. Review route options, then click the route you want.
  6. Use Step-by-step to follow instructions, or enable live guidance on your device if you’re actually navigating.

Google Maps app (iPhone, iPad, Android)

  1. Open the Google Maps app.
  2. Tap Directions (often from the place page, or from the bottom bar).
  3. Select your Start and Destination.
  4. Make sure Driving is selected (car icon).
  5. Tap Start to begin guidance or review steps before you move.

To connect Maps to Google Earth, you can also explore the same route visually with Street View (Method 2) once you know the road segments.

Method 2: Use Street View to move like you are driving

Street View is the feature that most closely feels like “driving” in a virtual sense. You don’t control a car with steering physics, but you can move along a road and look around at street level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Street View from Google Maps (desktop or mobile)

  1. In Google Maps, zoom in until roads and street names are visible.
  2. Drag Pegman (the little person icon) onto the street. If you don’t see Pegman, switch to a map view and look for the Street View control.
  3. Drop Pegman on a supported segment.
  4. Use the on-screen controls to move forward/backward and turn your view.

Typical Street View controls to expect

Depending on platform, you’ll usually see controls for forward/back, left/right turning, and a compass-style orientation. If you see only a photo with no movement arrows, that segment doesn’t have navigable Street View.

  • 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.
  • Movement is segment-based: You can only move where Street View has coverage.
  • Some views are not “drivable”: Alleys, campuses, and newly built roads may have imagery but limited navigation.

If you want to “drive” a full trip, use driving directions in Maps first, then open Street View for the road segments you care about.

Method 3: Create a route/path in Google Earth Pro (KML) and replay the travel

Google Earth Pro (desktop) can create a visual path and then play a “camera travel” along that line. This won’t obey traffic rules, but it’s great for revisiting a route you planned or traced.

Set up Google Earth Pro

  1. Install and open Google Earth Pro on your computer.
  2. Search for your start location using the search bar.
  3. Switch to the view you want (2D/3D). A 3D view is usually best for replay.

Create a path (route line)

  1. Click Add in the top menu.
  2. Select Path (wording may vary slightly by version).
  3. Name your path (example: Route to Downtown).
  4. Click along the route to place points. Zoom in so your points land on the road line you want.
  5. When finished placing points, click OK or Finish (UI labels vary).

Adjust path altitude and appearance

  1. With the path selected, open its Properties.
  2. Set Style, Color, and thickness so you can see the path clearly.
  3. If your route floats or sinks, check the altitude mode settings (for example, options like clamp to ground if available).

Replay travel along the path

  1. With the path selected, look for a Play, Fly, or Tour option. Google Earth Pro supports creating tours from camera positions and paths.
  2. Create a Tour (or camera sequence) that follows points on your path.
  3. Set timing so the playback feels like a drive (slower for tight streets, faster for highways).
  4. Press Play and test the camera angle.

Exporting the route is also useful. If you need to share it, you can save and export KML/KMZ from Google Earth Pro.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 4: Road-trip playback using Google Earth Voyager and “Travel”

Google Earth includes pre-built guided experiences (Voyager) and camera “travel” features that can resemble moving along a route. This is less customizable than making your own path, but it’s fast and polished.

Use Voyager

  1. Open Google Earth (desktop or web).
  2. Open the Voyager section (usually accessible from the left sidebar or menu).
  3. Select an experience related to a city, country, or specific theme.
  4. Press Play or follow the guided steps.

Use guided “travel” for a location

  1. Search for a place.
  2. Look for options that start a guided tour or camera movement (some views provide a “travel” experience).
  3. Adjust playback by using the on-screen controls.

This method won’t produce your exact car path, but it can simulate a cinematic driving sequence for exploration.

Method 5: Google Earth on mobile (iPhone, iPad, Android) — what you can and can’t do

On mobile, the experience is mostly about exploring and viewing. You won’t get full “drive mode” like a simulator, but you can still use Street View and route exploration.

iPhone and iPad (iOS)

  1. Open Google Earth on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Search for your location.
  3. Tap any location that offers imagery controls.
  4. If Street View is available, open it and use touch gestures to move around.

Android

  1. Open Google Earth on your Android device.
  2. Search for your destination.
  3. Open Street View where supported.
  4. Use on-screen touch navigation to look left/right and move when arrows or street navigation appear.

Gotcha: If you don’t see Street View options, it’s usually a coverage or UI availability issue rather than a settings problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 6: Simulate driving with VR or third-party tools

If you truly want to “drive” with a steering wheel feel, you’re leaving the native Google Earth experience. The closest practical approaches are VR viewing or using Google data (routes/coordinates) inside a simulator.

VR-style viewing (Google Earth/Street View VR, where available)

  1. Open Street View for a road segment.
  2. Use a VR-capable mode if your headset/app supports it.
  3. Look around and move forward when Street View navigation arrows appear.

VR gives immersion, but it still won’t replicate real car physics unless you use a dedicated simulation tool.

Third-party driving simulator workflow (KML/route coordinates)

  1. Create a route in Google Earth Pro using a Path.
  2. Export the path as KML or KMZ.
  3. Convert route points to the format your simulator expects (often via scripts or import tools).
  4. Import and drive in the simulator using those coordinates as waypoints.

This approach is more work, but it’s the only way to get realistic driving controls.

Common problems and troubleshooting

Most failures come from expecting Google Earth to behave like a game driving simulator. Here’s how to diagnose what’s actually happening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No car controls or no movement in Google Earth

  • Cause: Google Earth’s default controls move the camera, not a vehicle.
  • Fix: Use Street View for road-level navigation (Method 2) or use Google Maps for turn-by-turn driving directions (Method 1).

Street View won’t let you move forward

  • Cause: The exact segment doesn’t have Street View navigation arrows, or coverage is missing.
  • Fix: Reopen Street View from Google Maps and drop Pegman on a different part of the same road. Try zooming out slightly and re-dropping.

Route playback in Google Earth Pro feels wrong (too fast/slow, camera angle off)

  • Fix: When creating a Tour, adjust camera timing and spacing between points. If the camera clips through buildings, increase point spacing or tilt angle.
  • Fix: Check altitude mode (ground clamp vs fixed altitude) so the path stays where you expect.

Google Maps driving directions don’t match the road you expect

  • Cause: Routing can change based on road closures, time-of-day, or wrong start/destination pin placement.
  • Fix: Drag the start/destination pins to the correct road. Try a different route option.

Slow performance in 3D or tours

  • Cause: Heavy rendering (especially on older GPUs) or large scenes.
  • Fix: Reduce layers, avoid large overlays, and keep the scene focused on your route.

Comparing your options (which one to choose)

Goal Best option What you’ll realistically get
Drive from A to B with turns Google Maps driving directions Accurate routing, step-by-step guidance
“Drive” visually along a road Street View via Google Maps Street-level movement where Street View coverage exists
Replay a custom route you drew Google Earth Pro path + Tour playback Camera travel along a line you create (not true car physics)
Quick scenic road-trip experience Voyager / guided travel Polished guided camera movement (less control)

FAQ

Can I actually drive a car inside Google Earth like a simulator?

No. Google Earth is primarily a map visualization tool. You can control the camera, follow directions, and use Street View for road-level exploration, but it isn’t a physics-based driving simulator.

How do I switch to Street View for my route?

Open your route in Google Maps, then use Pegman to drop into Street View on the exact road segment you want. You’ll need Street View coverage for that segment.

Why can’t I find Street View in Google Earth?

Street View availability varies by location. Also, the feature is often easier to access from Google Maps (using Pegman) rather than from Google Earth directly.

Does Google Earth Pro support exporting my route?

Yes. Routes you create as paths (KML/KMZ) can be saved and shared. The exact export labels depend on your Google Earth Pro version, but KML/KMZ export is standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which is better for planning a drive: Google Earth or Google Maps?

Google Maps. Use Google Maps for routing and timing. Use Google Earth/Street View to preview what the roads look like at street level.

Bottom Line

If you want a true driving experience with turns, use Google Maps driving directions. If you want to move along streets visually, use Street View via Google Maps. For custom replay, build a path in Google Earth Pro and play it as a Tour.

Once you match your goal to the right tool, “driving” in Google Earth becomes straightforward—and you stop fighting controls that were never meant to behave like a car simulator.
