How to Drill Deep Underground With Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

Horizontal directional drilling follows a guided, mostly horizontal path, but there is no universal depth limit. Feasibility depends on the project’s route, ground, equipment, tracking, and requirements.

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) installs pipe, conduit, or cable along a guided path drilled from the surface, usually a mostly horizontal route or shallow arc. There is no universal maximum HDD depth established by the cited industry and safety guidance. A project described as “deep” must be assessed against its actual route, geology, equipment, tracking method, product, and local requirements—not a general depth figure.

What “deep” means in horizontal directional drilling

HDD is a trenchless installation method, not a deep vertical-well technique. Its machines are designed primarily for mostly horizontal drilling; ISO 21467:2023 specifies commercial requirements for HDD machines and explicitly excludes rock drill rigs. The safety draft ISO/DIS 23224 also describes machines primarily intended for mostly horizontal drilling; check its current status before treating it as a requirement. ISO 21467:2023 · ISO/DIS 23224

The available guidance characterizes HDD as a shallow-arc method but does not set one maximum vertical depth that applies to every machine or project. That means a depth number detached from a specific rig, design, geology, and jurisdiction would be misleading. A proposed profile needs project-specific engineering and subsurface investigation, as well as review of tracking capability, installation constraints, permits, and safety requirements. How an HDD installation works

The standard installation has three stages. This is an overview of the method, not instructions for operating a drilling rig; the design, equipment, and controls must be selected for the site.

  1. Pilot drilling: The drill head follows a planned two- or three-dimensional curved target line from the entry point toward the exit. A steerable head or angled element behind it changes direction; the crew needs reliable information about the head’s position to keep it on the planned path.
  2. Reaming: At the exit side, a reamer is attached and pulled back through the pilot bore to enlarge it. Larger reamers may be used in successive passes to reach the diameter needed for the product. Drilling fluid helps stabilize the uncased bore through hydrostatic pressure.
  3. Pullback: The pipe, conduit, or duct is attached and drawn through the enlarged bore. A swivel helps keep drill-string rotation from transferring to the product being installed.

Tooling depends on the ground. DCA Europe describes jet bits for primarily hydraulic loosening and rock bits with mud motors for combined hydraulic-mechanical or mechanical loosening. These are equipment concepts, not a prescription for choosing tooling at a particular site. DCA Europe, HDD Technique

What determines whether a deeper profile is feasible?

Depth is only one part of a bore’s geometry. Before selecting HDD or comparing it with another method, the project team needs to evaluate the complete route and installation conditions.

  • Route and geometry: Required depth, entry and exit locations, bore length, curvature, and product diameter.
  • Ground and water: Geology, groundwater, and the implications of the formation for drilling and bore stability.
  • Equipment and tracking: Whether the proposed rig, tooling, and tracking approach can execute and monitor the planned profile under site conditions.
  • Existing infrastructure: Nearby buried utilities and the ability to verify their positions along the route.
  • Environmental sensitivity: The risk of drilling-fluid returns and the measures needed to monitor, respond, and limit impacts.
  • Access and approvals: Surface access, obstacles, applicable permits, and project-specific safety or regulatory requirements.

These factors vary by project; the cited material does not establish a universal ranking of HDD against alternative installation methods. DCA Europe’s English fifth edition of its HDD design, construction, and documentation guidelines is listed as July 2025. DCA Europe technical guidelines

Plan for utility strikes and drilling-fluid returns

Verify buried utilities in the field

Utility records alone may not be enough: WorkSafe Western Australia warns that “as constructed” records can be missing or inaccurate. Field risk assessment, electronic detection, and potholing where appropriate can help confirm service locations. OSHA warns that striking an underground electrical wire can electrocute an operator, while hitting a gas line can cause a leak or explosion. OSHA says the state utility-location system must be used before drilling; the exact notification process depends on the project’s jurisdiction. Monitor and prepare for inadvertent returns

Drilling fluid can escape the intended bore and reach the ground surface or water. Monitoring, a response procedure, and a contingency plan should address how a return will be recognized and managed. FERC’s guidance, issued in October 2019 and updated on its website in May 2020, covers HDD monitoring, inadvertent-return response, and contingency planning. It is U.S. federal staff guidance for relevant projects, not a universal rule for every location. FERC HDD guidance

Regulations depend on location and project type

Pennsylvania provides one jurisdiction-specific example. Under 52 Pa. Code §59.138, covered hazardous-liquid public utility work meeting any of the stated thresholds—bore diameter of at least 8 inches, bore depth greater than 10 feet, or pipeline length greater than 250 feet—requires geological and environmental impact analysis and contingency planning. The rule’s planning provisions address drilling-fluid discharges, water supplies, underground mining, and karst terrain, among other matters. These thresholds apply to the covered work under that Pennsylvania rule; they are not general HDD limits or requirements for other jurisdictions and project types. 52 Pa. Code §59.138
