What to wear to a cold, windy baseball game
You may spend several hours sitting outdoors, so choose clothing for the forecast and your seat exposure, not just the temperature when you leave home. The goal is adjustable warmth: add insulation when you are sitting still, then remove a layer if walking to the park makes you sweat.

Start with adjustable layers
The National Weather Service advises wearing “several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.” A comfortable base layer and one or more insulating layers let you adapt as conditions change. There is no universally established number of layers or best fabric for every game; choose pieces that fit comfortably together and can be taken off or put back on.

The NWS advises removing layers to prevent sweating and becoming chilled. If your clothing gets wet, change into dry clothing where practical: moisture increases heat loss.

Choose an outer layer that blocks wind
Wear a tightly woven, water-repellent, hooded jacket or coat suited to the expected conditions. Wind resistance matters because moving air increases heat loss from exposed skin; water repellency helps if rain or wet snow is possible. Make sure the outer layer fits over your other clothing without restricting movement, and that you can open or remove it to manage warmth.
When comparing jackets, consider wind resistance, water repellency, warmth for the forecast, hood coverage, fit over layers, and how easily you can vent or remove it. No source establishes a particular brand, technical rating, or coat as best for every spectator.

Cover your head, hands, and neck
A warm hat, scarf or other neck covering, and gloves or mittens help cover exposed areas. The NWS specifically notes that “Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.” Choose handwear that fits securely at the wrist and lets you comfortably handle tickets, a phone, or food.

Warm long pants and closed-toe footwear are practical choices for an early- or late-season game. The Chicago Cubs’ Wrigley Field guide recommends closed-toe shoes for early-season games and long pants for cold October evenings. That is local visitor guidance, not a universal rule for every park or game.

Check the forecast and your seat exposure
Before you leave, check the current temperature, wind, and precipitation forecast for the ballpark, then check again close to game time. Wind chill helps describe how cold conditions may feel on exposed skin, but it is not the actual air temperature. NOAA explains that wind chill describes heat loss from people and animals; it does not make objects colder than the air temperature.
For scale, NOAA’s educational example says that 0°F air with a 15 mph wind produces a -19°F wind chill. This illustrates the effect of wind on exposure; it is not a baseball-specific statistic or a clothing-performance measure. The NWS notes that frostbite requires an actual air temperature below freezing: wind chill does not make above-freezing air cold enough to freeze skin. Prolonged exposure can still pose a hypothermia risk, especially when someone is wet.

Where you sit also matters. The Cubs’ Wrigley guide identifies the bleachers and upper-deck outfield seats as particularly exposed during early-season games. Treat that as advice about Wrigley, not a claim about other stadiums; at any park, consider whether your seats are exposed and how long you expect to be outdoors.
What to bring—and what to check with the ballpark
A blanket can add comfort during a cold evening game. The Cubs recommend one for October evening games at Wrigley, alongside a medium-weight jacket or fleece and long pants. Policies are venue-specific, though, so check your stadium’s current rules for blankets, bags, and other carried items before packing.

For example, Oriole Park at Camden Yards’ published 2026 policy specifies one approved bag per person and limits bag types and sizes. That policy applies to that venue and season; it does not establish what another ballpark allows.
When cold exposure becomes a safety concern
Take it seriously if someone develops uncontrollable shivering, confusion, slurred speech, unusual drowsiness, or exhaustion. These can be signs of hypothermia. Move the person to a warmer place and seek medical attention. Wet clothing makes cold exposure more dangerous, so staying dry and changing out of wet clothes where possible matter as much as adding insulation.
