Three.js provides 3D geometry and rendering APIs; it does not supply a native 4D tesseract object.
What a tesseract drawing represents
A tesseract is the four-dimensional analogue of a cube, also called a 4D hypercube. Imagine extruding a square along a new direction to make a cube, then extruding that cube along a fourth direction. A screen cannot display that fourth direction directly, so a drawing shows a projection of the 4D shape into 3D, which is then rendered on a 2D screen.

The projection rule matters: it determines how the four-dimensional coordinates become the three-dimensional points Three.js can display. The Tesseract Explorer project demonstrates manipulating a 4D object and projecting it into 3D: Tesseract Explorer.

How do you draw a 4D tesseract in Three.js?
1. Generate the 16 four-dimensional vertices
Represent each vertex as a point (x, y, z, w). A standard hypercube construction assigns each coordinate either −1 or +1, yielding 2⁴, or 16, vertices. The fourth coordinate, w, is not a Three.js position component; it is part of the application’s 4D data.

2. Connect vertices that differ in one coordinate
Every edge joins a pair of vertices whose coordinates differ in exactly one of the four positions. This gives the tesseract’s edge structure without manually listing every segment. The React and Three.js example demonstrates programmatic vertex generation, rotation, and projection: 4D Tesseract Visualization with React & Three.js.
3. Rotate the points in four-dimensional planes
In 4D, a rotation is defined in a plane. For example, an XY-plane rotation changes x and y while leaving z and w unchanged; a ZW-plane rotation changes z and w while leaving x and y unchanged. The cited example rotates in XY and ZW planes, but those are choices, not requirements. Applying rotation to the vertices before projection makes the projected shape move in ways that ordinary 3D rotation cannot reproduce.

4. Project each rotated point into 3D
Choose a projection explicitly. The simplest orthographic rule drops w and keeps (x, y, z). It is easy to implement, but discards information and can cause distinct 4D vertices to overlap at the same 3D location.

This can add depth cues, but requires a camera distance and care around points where the projection denominator approaches zero. The Tesseract Explorer documents this kind of 4D camera model. Neither projection is universally correct: orthographic projection favors simplicity, while perspective can suggest more depth.

5. Send projected edge endpoints to Three.js
After projection, each endpoint is an ordinary 3D position. Three.js BufferGeometry stores attributes such as vertex positions in buffers. For a basic edge drawing, place the projected endpoints in the geometry’s position attribute and render the edges as line segments.
For disconnected edges drawn with thicker lines, Three.js offers the LineSegmentsGeometry add-on, which accepts segment positions through setPositions. It is an optional add-on, not a requirement for basic line rendering.

How do you rotate a tesseract in 4D?
Apply one or more plane-rotation matrices to every 4D vertex, then project the transformed point. A rotation in the XY plane uses the familiar two-dimensional rotation on x and y; a rotation in another plane applies the same pattern to that coordinate pair. For animated rotation, advance the selected plane angle over time, recalculate the transformed and projected points, update the position data, and render the frame.
Rotation belongs in the 4D application logic, before projection. Rotating the final Three.js object only changes its 3D orientation; it does not create a 4D rotation. A static projection is also valid if the goal is a fixed diagram rather than an animation.

General implementation outline
This is a general recipe, not a claim about the exact source code behind any particular implementation:
- Enumerate all 16 points in four coordinates.
- Generate edge pairs by selecting vertices that differ in exactly one coordinate.
- For each frame, rotate every point in the chosen 4D plane or planes.
- Project each rotated point into 3D with a stated orthographic or perspective rule.
- Write the projected edge endpoints into a Three.js position buffer and render the segments.
What Three.js handles after projection
Once the points are projected, the remaining work is conventional 3D rendering: position the Three.js camera, choose line color and width, add the geometry to a scene, and render it. Animation likewise follows the ordinary render loop; the distinctive step is recalculating the 4D transform and projection before updating the geometry.
Check the documentation for the Three.js version installed in your project before copying imports or geometry-update patterns, since API details can change. The core geometry reference is BufferGeometry; the optional thick-line API is documented under LineSegmentsGeometry.
