1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can stream a 4K pre-recorded video as a 1080p YouTube Live broadcast without first converting the file: play it in streaming software, set the outgoing resolution to 1920×1080, and configure the encoder for YouTube’s recommended bitrate and other live settings. The file remains 4K on your computer; it is the transmitted live output that is downscaled.
What changes when you downscale a 4K video for YouTube Live?
Your video file and your live stream have separate resolutions. A 4K file can remain untouched while streaming software reduces the picture sent to YouTube to 1920×1080. YouTube’s Live Control Room needs the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, and YouTube transcodes the live feed into formats for viewers. YouTube’s live encoder guidance is the reference for ingestion settings.

This makes live scaling a practical alternative to creating a second, smaller copy of the video. It does not improve the source or make the result equivalent to sending a native 4K live feed: fine detail is reduced to fit the 1080p output.
Choose the 1080p frame rate and bitrate
Match the stream’s frame rate to the source when possible, or choose the cadence you want viewers to see. YouTube’s recommendations are higher at 60 fps than at 30 fps; 60 fps is not automatically preferable if the source is 30 fps, the motion does not call for it, or upload bandwidth is limited.

| Output | H.264 recommended | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | AV1 or H.265 minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations and minimums for the listed codec, resolution, and frame rate; the current guidance was accessed on 2026-10-03. Treat the recommended bitrate as a starting point, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Your upload connection needs to sustain the selected stream bitrate, with room for normal connection variation. YouTube recommends testing upload speed before going live. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
Pick a codec your encoder supports
YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported live codecs, but that does not mean every streaming-software encoder supports every codec and setting combination. If you are unsure, choose a codec available in your encoder and verify the selected combination in a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before relying on it.

Set up OBS to scale the live output
Menu names can vary between OBS versions. The following is the practical workflow for a 16:9 4K file and a 1080p output. OBS performance guidance describes the output scaling controls; it is supporting context rather than a guarantee that every version presents identical labels. OBS performance guidance.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Add the video: Create or select a scene, add a Media Source, and select the pre-recorded file. Check that the desired video and audio play together and that the source begins at the intended point.
- Set the output size: Open Settings > Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at the composition size that makes sense for your scene; if the source is the only item, this may be its 4K size. Confirm the preview is framed correctly.
- Preserve the aspect ratio: A 16:9 4K source fits a 16:9 1080p canvas. If the file has a different aspect ratio, decide whether to crop part of the picture or letterbox it with empty space. Do not stretch it to fill the frame unless distortion is intended.
- Choose a downscale filter: Select bilinear, bicubic, or Lanczos if offered. Bilinear uses the least system resources; Lanczos is more demanding and can look sharper; bicubic is another middle option. Compare fine detail and moving sections of the actual video, and choose the best balance for your computer.
- Set the output frame rate: In Settings > Video, choose 30 or 60 fps to match the source or intended stream cadence. Avoid converting a 30 fps source to 60 fps merely because the higher number is available.
- Configure the encoder: Under OBS output settings, select an encoder that supports your chosen codec. Use CBR and set the bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, that is 14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60; for AV1 or H.265, it is 10 Mbps or 12 Mbps respectively.
- Set keyframes and audio: Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube supports AAC or MP3 audio and lists 128 Kbps stereo at a 44.1 kHz sample rate in its advanced recommendations. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. YouTube’s advanced encoder recommendations.
- Connect YouTube: In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and connect the account or enter the stream key using the option shown in your version. Treat the key like a password: do not show or share it. Check that the Live Control Room recognizes the incoming encoder settings.
- Test before the broadcast: Start a test stream and check picture, motion, audio level and synchronization, framing, and stream health. Confirm the file starts where you expect and plays through its ending as intended. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. YouTube’s live-stream testing advice.
Check copyright and YouTube live eligibility
Having a video file does not mean you have the rights to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. Before streaming, confirm that you own the relevant rights or have permission for the intended use, and review YouTube’s current policies and any restrictions shown for your channel or content. A stream may be interrupted or restricted if it uses material you are not allowed to broadcast. A technical test verifies the signal, not copyright clearance.

Reduce load if OBS struggles
Downscaling can reduce encoding work, but decoding a high-resolution file and processing the scene still use system resources. OBS guidance notes that a hardware encoder such as Intel Quick Sync, AMD AMF, or NVIDIA NVENC may reduce CPU load, with a possible quality trade-off at a given bitrate compared with x264. Lowering frame rate can also reduce the number of frames processed. Test on the actual machine rather than assuming one encoder or scaling filter is best. OBS performance guidance.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube receives 4K or an unexpected size: Check Settings > Video > Output (Scaled) Resolution and confirm it is 1920×1080. Verify the incoming resolution in the Live Control Room.
- The image is stretched, cropped, or surrounded by unexpected bars: Check the source and canvas aspect ratios and adjust the framing deliberately. Preserve the picture’s proportions rather than stretching it.
- The stream buffers or loses health: Test upload speed, check that it can sustain the chosen bitrate, and reduce the output bitrate or frame rate if the connection cannot reliably carry it. Confirm the encoder is using CBR.
- Video stutters or the computer is overloaded: Try a less demanding downscale filter, lower the frame rate if appropriate, or test a supported hardware encoder. Check whether the problem is decoding, scene processing, or encoding before changing several settings at once.
- There is no audio or it drifts out of sync: Confirm the Media Source is playing the intended audio track and that it is routed to the stream. Test a representative section and monitor audio/video synchronization before going live.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm the correct stream key is entered, the stream is started in OBS, and the Live Control Room is set up for the same broadcast. If a key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
Or let it run in the cloud
