Replace VIDEO_ID in https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg with the video’s ID, open the completed address, and save the image from your browser. If the maximum-size file is unavailable, use one of the fallback URLs below.
The fastest method: open the thumbnail URL directly
- Open the YouTube video and copy its URL.
- Find the video ID, then remove everything except that ID.
- Insert the ID into
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. - Paste the completed address into your browser and press Enter.
- Save the displayed image using your browser’s save option.
For example, the video ID dQw4w9WgXcQ produces:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.jpg
On Windows, Linux, macOS, or ChromeOS, right-click (or Control-click on a Mac) and choose the image-saving option. On a phone, press and hold the image, then choose Save Image, Save to Photos, or Download image, depending on your browser and operating-system version.
This retrieves a YouTube-hosted thumbnail rendition. It does not download the video, and it usually is not the creator’s original, uncompressed design file.

How to find the YouTube video ID
Standard watch link
In https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ, the ID is the value after v=: dQw4w9WgXcQ.
Shortened link
In https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ, the ID is the path segment after the domain.
Shorts link
In https://www.youtube.com/shorts/dQw4w9WgXcQ, the ID follows /shorts/. Test the same i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/... pattern first; Shorts can use different preview behavior on YouTube surfaces.
Do not include v=, &list=..., timestamp parameters such as &t=30s, quotation marks, spaces, or the entire YouTube URL in the image address. A single incorrect character can return a missing or unrelated image.
Choose the best available thumbnail quality
The commonly used image endings form a practical fallback ladder. Availability is not guaranteed for every video.

Google’s YouTube Data API documentation lists thumbnail tiers named default, medium, high, standard, and sometimes maxres. It describes maxres as typically 1280 × 720 when available, while warning that availability and actual dimensions can differ. That is different from YouTube’s creator upload guidance, which allows custom thumbnails up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels and a recommended 16:9 ratio. Those upload limits do not mean every downloadable thumbnail is available at that size; see YouTube’s thumbnail guidance.
When maxresdefault.jpg does not work
A missing image, not-found response, placeholder, or unexpectedly small file usually means the requested rendition is unavailable rather than that downloading is impossible.
- Check the video ID character by character.
- Remove every extra query parameter from the ID and image URL.
- Try
sddefault.jpg, thenhqdefault.jpg. - If necessary, try
mqdefault.jpganddefault.jpg. - Reload the address in a private window or another browser if the page appears cached or malformed.
Private, deleted, restricted, or otherwise unavailable videos may not expose the expected thumbnail. Live-stream thumbnails can change, so a saved file is only a snapshot. A Premiere may show different artwork before and after the event. Channel avatars, playlist images, and other YouTube artwork use different resources and should not be assumed to follow this video URL pattern.
Downloading on iPhone, iPad, and Android
iPhone or iPad
- Open the completed thumbnail URL in Safari or another browser.
- Press and hold the image.
- Choose Save to Photos, Save Image, or the closest available option.
Android
- Open the thumbnail URL in Chrome or another browser.
- Press and hold the image.
- Tap Download image or Save image.
Menu wording changes between browsers and operating-system releases. If a press-and-hold menu does not appear, open the image in a new tab first.
Automating retrieval with the YouTube Data API
For one thumbnail, the direct URL is simpler. Developers processing many videos can query a video resource and read its snippet.thumbnails object. Returned entries can include default, medium, high, standard, and maxres, with a url, width, and height when supplied.

API use requires a Google Cloud project, credentials, code, and quota management. It is worthwhile for bulk retrieval, content-management systems, or workflows that need the exact URL and dimensions returned for each video. The official reference is developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/thumbnails.
Optional command-line download
Technical users can save a known URL with curl:

A failed or placeholder response can still create a file, so inspect the image afterward. Availability and syntax vary across Windows shells and installations.

- Video thumbnail: the still image YouTube displays beside or above a video.
- Video frame: a screenshot captured from the moving video; it may not match the creator-selected thumbnail.
- Channel avatar, playlist image, or Shorts preview: separate image resources with different behavior.
- Original design file: normally unavailable unless the creator supplies it.
The direct URL commonly ends in .jpg, but that does not promise the creator’s original JPEG file or original dimensions.
Can you legally reuse a downloaded thumbnail?
You can usually save a thumbnail technically, but downloading it does not automatically grant permission to republish it. YouTube says the default is the Standard YouTube license; a video marked Creative Commons Attribution may permit reuse subject to that license and its attribution requirements. Check the video’s license and, when appropriate, ask the creator.
Personal reference, criticism, education, commercial advertising, and public social posts can raise different copyright, trademark, publicity-rights, and platform-policy questions. Do you need a third-party thumbnail downloader?
Usually not. The direct image address avoids installing software, creating an account, uploading a URL to an unknown service, and navigating advertising-heavy pages. It is generally the best choice for one or a few public videos.
A downloader website can be convenient if you do not want to edit a URL, but it is not an authoritative source of the image. Watch for fake download buttons, pop-ups, notification requests, forced extensions, and unclear privacy practices. Never provide sensitive or private video links to an untrusted service. For editing, resizing, or redesigning a saved image, tools such as Canva or Adobe Express are optional next steps, not requirements for downloading.
Special cases to keep in mind
- Vertical videos: the downloadable image may still be a landscape composition, and YouTube can display it differently across surfaces.
- Shorts: creators select a frame rather than uploading a custom thumbnail in the same way as long-form videos; preview behavior varies.
- Live streams: the thumbnail can change while the stream is active.
- Animated or changing previews: the saved file is a static image, not a video or animation.
- Unavailable videos: private, deleted, age-restricted, or region-restricted content may not return a usable image.
