Start with Windows Update. In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart. If Windows Update does not provide the driver you need, identify the graphics processor in Device Manager > Display adapters, then download a matching package from the official NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or computer-manufacturer support page.
This order minimizes the risk of installing the wrong package. It also gives you a recovery path: check the installed version, roll back a troublesome update, or uninstall and let Windows attempt to reinstall the display driver.

What a video driver does
A video, graphics, or display driver is the software that lets Windows communicate with a graphics processor (GPU). The GPU may be integrated into the processor, installed as a separate graphics card, or supplied as part of a laptop’s custom hardware. Windows uses the driver to draw the desktop, run applications, play video, and support 3D workloads.

- The GPU family and exact model.
- The Windows edition and version the package supports.
- Your system architecture, normally 64-bit but occasionally 32-bit on older installations.
- Sometimes the computer model, especially for laptops and prebuilt desktops.
Installing a package for a similar-looking GPU, a different Windows release, or a different architecture can fail, leave the adapter listed as a generic display device, or introduce instability. Confirm those details before downloading.
Important Windows 10 support date
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. A Windows 10 computer can still have a working display driver, and manufacturers may continue to publish packages for particular models, but you should treat the operating system as unsupported and check the support status of every package you install.
Route 1: Use Windows Update first
Microsoft describes Windows Update as the normal automatic route for driver updates, including video cards. It is the safest first attempt when you do not know the exact GPU model or when the computer uses an OEM-specific configuration.

- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the offered updates. If Windows requests a restart, choose Restart now or restart later after closing your applications.
- Return to Windows Update after the restart and check again. A driver can be offered in a later scan after prerequisite updates have been installed.
Check optional driver updates
Some driver packages are not installed automatically. In the Windows Update page, open View optional updates when that link appears, expand the driver category, select the relevant display driver, and choose Download and install. Restart when prompted.
If no display driver appears, Windows Update may already consider the installed package current, may not have a package for your exact hardware, or may be unable to identify the adapter correctly. Move to Device Manager rather than repeatedly forcing the same scan.

Find the installed GPU in Device Manager
- Select Start and type Device Manager.
- Open the Device Manager result.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Read the complete name of each listed adapter. Names commonly identify NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or Qualcomm hardware. A laptop may show both an integrated adapter and a separate graphics processor.
Double-click an adapter and open the General tab if you need its status message. The Driver tab shows the provider, date, version, and related controls. Record the exact adapter name before visiting a download page. If Display adapters contains only a generic Microsoft entry, or if the adapter has a warning icon, use the computer manufacturer’s support page first; the generic entry may indicate that the proper package is missing.
Choose the right download source
There are three practical sources: Windows Update, the computer manufacturer (OEM), and the GPU manufacturer. They are not interchangeable in every situation.

For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, check the OEM page even when the GPU name is familiar. The OEM package may contain model-specific power, display-switching, or firmware integration that a generic reference package does not. For a separately installed desktop graphics card, the GPU manufacturer’s package is usually the direct source.
NVIDIA packages
Use NVIDIA’s official driver selector and choose the exact product series, model, and Windows operating system. NVIDIA commonly separates packages into Game Ready and Studio branches. Game Ready is aimed at current game releases; Studio is aimed at supported creative applications and workflows. Choose the branch that matches your workload rather than assuming one is universally better.
AMD packages
Use AMD’s Windows driver page or its Auto-Detect tool for supported Windows 10 Radeon and Ryzen systems. AMD says the tool detects the Radeon or Ryzen model and the installed Windows version, then offers a compatible official package. Verify that your Windows 10 edition and hardware are within the tool’s supported scope before relying on automatic detection.

Intel packages
Use Intel Driver & Support Assistant or select the processor and graphics package manually in Intel Download Center. Intel advises installing the latest graphics driver from the computer manufacturer or selecting a package manually from its Download Center. On a laptop, compare the Intel package with the OEM release before replacing an OEM driver.

Confirm your Windows edition and architecture
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Under Windows specifications, note the edition and version.
- Under Device specifications, note System type, such as 64-bit operating system.
On the download page, select Windows 10 rather than Windows 11, and select the architecture that matches System type. Do not select a package only because its year or version number is newer; compatibility with the exact GPU and operating system comes first.
Download and install a package manually
Using a vendor installer
- Download the package from the official GPU or computer-manufacturer support page.
- Check the file name and release notes for the GPU model, Windows 10 support, and architecture.
- Close games, video editors, browsers playing video, and other graphics-intensive applications.
- Run the installer and follow its prompts. Keep the default components unless you have a specific reason to change them.
- Allow the display to go blank or flicker briefly during installation; do not power off the computer while the installer is working.
- Restart when the installer requests it, even if the desktop appears to have returned normally.
Vendor installers may offer an advanced or clean-install choice. Use it when a normal update repeatedly fails or when remnants of a previous package are suspected. A clean installation can reset vendor settings, so record custom display or application profiles first.
Using Device Manager’s manual route
If you already downloaded and extracted a driver folder, Device Manager can install it directly:
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the target adapter and select Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select the folder containing the downloaded driver files. Keep Include subfolders enabled when the files are arranged in multiple folders.
- Select Next and let Windows search the folder for a compatible driver.
- Restart after installation completes.
Device Manager can also search automatically, but Windows Update is the preferred automatic path. The manual Browse route is useful when you have a known-good package that Windows Update did not offer.

Verify the installation
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Double-click the adapter and open the Driver tab.
- Check Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version against the package you intended to install.
- Open the General tab and confirm that Windows reports the device is working properly.
- Test the applications that previously showed the problem, then check the display after a full restart.
Keep the downloaded installer or its extracted folder until you know the update is stable. It gives you a known package to reinstall if a later change causes trouble.

Roll back the driver
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver when the button is available, choose a reason, and confirm.
- Restart Windows and test the display again.
The rollback control may be unavailable when Windows has no previous driver package retained. In that case, download the prior stable package from the OEM or GPU manufacturer’s support page and install it manually.
Uninstall and let Windows reinstall
- In Device Manager, right-click the adapter and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers a box to remove the driver software, select it only when you intend to replace the package immediately and have a compatible installer ready.
- Restart the computer. Windows will attempt to detect the adapter and install an available display driver.
- If the result is a generic display entry or limited resolution, install the correct OEM or GPU-vendor package you downloaded.
During recovery, the screen may use a basic resolution or refresh rate. That is expected until the proper driver is installed. If you lose a usable picture, restart in Windows Recovery or Safe Mode and repeat the rollback or uninstall process from there.
When flicker continues after rollback
- Check that the monitor cable is firmly seated and that the selected input matches the connected port.
- Test one monitor at a time, if more than one is attached.
- Return any recent GPU overclock or custom refresh-rate setting to its normal value.
- Compare the OEM and GPU-vendor packages; a laptop may require the OEM release for stable graphics switching.
- Record whether flicker occurs before Windows signs in. Flicker limited to a particular application points to that application’s settings, while flicker across the boot screen indicates a broader hardware, cable, or firmware issue that a driver change may not solve.
Common download and installation problems
The installer says no compatible hardware was found
Recheck the adapter name in Device Manager, the selected Windows version, and the system architecture. If the computer has two adapters, make sure you selected the package for the adapter you are actually updating. For a laptop or prebuilt PC, try the exact model package from the OEM instead of a generic package.
Windows keeps replacing the package
Windows Update can offer its own driver after a manual installation. Note the version shown on the Driver tab, then compare it with the package you chose. If the OEM package is required for a model-specific feature, use the OEM support route and avoid mixing packages until the system is stable.
There is no Display adapters category
In Device Manager, open View > Show hidden devices and rescan for hardware changes. If the adapter still does not appear, check whether it is disabled, whether the computer has a physical graphics switch, and whether the manufacturer lists a chipset or graphics package for the model. A missing adapter can indicate a hardware or firmware problem rather than a simple download issue.
The driver installs but performance or resolution is limited
Verify the Driver Provider and Version, then restart. A generic display driver can provide a picture without exposing the GPU’s full features. Install the exact vendor or OEM package and confirm that the adapter name is restored under Display adapters.
The computer cannot get online
Download the driver on another computer and copy the installer with a USB drive, or use the manual Device Manager route after obtaining the extracted package. Confirm the file’s source and model match before running it. Keep a copy of the package locally so a future reinstall does not depend on an internet connection.

How to decide which route to use
- You do not know the GPU model: run Windows Update first, then use Device Manager to identify it.
- You have a laptop or prebuilt desktop: compare the exact OEM package before installing a generic GPU package.
- You have a desktop graphics card and need a current vendor release: select the exact model on the GPU manufacturer’s support page.
- You need a package for a known folder: use Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers.
- A new package causes flicker: use Roll Back Driver, then uninstall and restart if rollback is unavailable or ineffective.
Keeping a Windows 10 graphics driver manageable
Record the adapter name and working driver version before making a change. Download only from Windows Update, the computer manufacturer, or the GPU manufacturer, and keep the installer for the previous stable version. Make one driver change at a time so you can identify which change affects the display. Because Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, verify the operating system status and the vendor’s stated support before treating any new package as a long-term solution.
