You can start by searching for a place, dropping a pin, or adding a map from the Offline Maps menu. Apple’s instructions apply to iPhone with iOS 17 or later.
Download an area from a place search
- Open Maps while connected to the internet and search for a destination.
- Tap a search result. If Download appears, tap it. If it does not, tap More > Download Map.
- Resize the rectangle to include the area you need, then tap Download to confirm.
The button may not appear on every place result. Apple’s iPhone User Guide also says you can touch and hold an area on the map and tap Download.

Other ways to choose the map area
Drop a pin
- In Maps, tap an unmarked spot in the area you want to save.
- Tap Download, adjust the rectangle, and tap Download again to confirm.
Add a map from Offline Maps
- In Maps, tap your profile picture or initials, then tap Offline Maps.
- Tap Add, then search for an area or choose Current Location.
- Adjust the rectangle to cover the area and tap Download.
Choose an area that fits your trip and storage
Offline maps cover the selected area, not an entire country or every region you may travel through. Resize the rectangle to cover your destination and the routes you expect to take. Apple says Maps shows the prospective download size before you confirm; selecting a smaller area reduces the file size and the device storage it uses.

Offline map availability and features vary by country and region. Check that downloading is available for your destination rather than assuming a map saved for one region will cover another. Apple describes these limits in its offline maps support article.

What Apple Maps can do offline
Apple lists place hours and ratings, estimated arrival times, and turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling, and transit among the supported offline features. This does not mean every Maps feature is available without a connection. Apple also advises downloading an area in advance if you expect to lose internet service; some directions require a connection.
Manage saved offline maps
Open Maps, tap your profile picture or initials, then tap Offline Maps. Select a saved map to inspect it, rename it, resize its area, or delete it.

In the same settings area, Apple provides options to update downloaded maps automatically, restrict downloads to Wi-Fi, and enable Optimize Storage, which removes unused maps after a period. Only Use Offline Maps tells Maps to use downloaded data even when the iPhone has an internet connection; it is different from simply having maps saved for use when offline.
What to know about devices
Offline maps do not sync automatically across your devices, according to Apple’s support article. Apple’s support pages describe Apple Watch offline-map use differently: one says the Watch can show maps when the iPhone is on and within Bluetooth range, while the iPhone User Guide describes syncing maps to Apple Watch for use without the nearby iPhone. Check Apple’s current iOS and watchOS guidance for your devices before relying on standalone Watch use.
