To listen to a library audiobook offline in Libby, use the mobile app, borrow the title, and let it download before you lose internet access. Check Shelf > Loans: a card-and-checkmark icon means the loan is downloaded; a cloud means it still needs an internet connection. Libby’s website, libbyapp.com, requires internet and does not support offline listening.
Download an audiobook in the Libby mobile app
- Install Libby on a supported mobile device. Libby’s quick-start guide lists iOS 10+, Android 7.1+, and newer Fire tablets; device support can change, so check Libby’s current compatibility guidance if the app is unavailable or behaves differently on your device.
- Find your library and sign in. Add your library and sign in with your library card. Libraries choose which titles and formats they offer, so a particular audiobook may not be available through every library. Libby’s getting-started guide explains how to get started.
- Borrow the audiobook. Search or browse your library’s catalog and borrow an available title. If it is checked out, place a hold if the library offers that option.
- Wait for the download, then check its status. Open Shelf > Loans. Libby downloads books and audiobooks over Wi-Fi by default. A card-and-checkmark icon indicates a downloaded copy; a cloud icon indicates the title has not downloaded and will stream when opened. Libby’s download-status help describes these icons.
- Open and play the loan. Select the audiobook on your Shelf, then choose Open Audiobook. Libby’s player includes controls such as playback speed and a sleep timer.
Can you listen to Libby audiobooks without Wi-Fi?
Yes, if the audiobook has finished downloading in the Libby mobile app. Once downloaded, it can play without an internet connection until the loan expires. A loan that remains in the cloud needs internet to stream, so check its icon while you are still connected. Libby’s browser version always needs an internet connection, even if you previously opened the title there. Libby explains downloaded loans and offline access here.

Libby’s mobile app offers automatic-download choices and a Wi-Fi restriction. These settings affect the app, not libbyapp.com.

Allow downloads over cellular data
- Open Menu > Downloads in the Libby app.
- Switch Download Only On Wi-Fi off to allow cellular downloads.
- Check your mobile data allowance before downloading; audiobook files can be large.
Control automatic downloads
In the same Menu > Downloads settings, choose whether Libby automatically downloads everything, titles under a size you select, or nothing. Automatic downloads are convenient when you want loans ready for offline use, while a size limit or no automatic downloads gives you more control over storage. To listen offline after choosing no automatic downloads, make sure the title has downloaded before disconnecting.

Plan for storage and mobile data
Libby Help says that most audiobooks are more than 300 MB; the figure is a general guideline, not the size of every title. Several downloads can use substantial device storage. Libby says it will automatically use a detected SD card for downloads on devices that support SD cards. Its storage and download guidance covers these options.

If space is tight, you can remove a downloaded copy without returning the loan. You will still be able to listen while connected to the internet, but you will need to download it again before your next offline session.

Troubleshoot offline playback and buffering
- The audiobook will not play offline: Check Shelf > Loans. A cloud icon means the title has not downloaded; connect to the internet and wait for the download to finish.
- The loan was opened in a browser: The website requires internet. Download the loan in the mobile app for offline listening.
- The audiobook keeps buffering or skips: Connect to a reliable network and download the title to your device instead of streaming it. Libby recommends downloading when audio skips. See Libby’s playback and download help.
- The download does not start on cellular: In the app, open Menu > Downloads and switch Download Only On Wi-Fi off. Confirm that cellular data is available for the app and that your plan has data remaining.
- There is not enough free space: Remove downloads you no longer need, or—if your device supports it—use a detected SD card. Removing a downloaded copy does not return the loan.
