To save a JPG shown on a webpage, use the browser’s save-image command or open the image itself and save it. If you are building a page that offers a download, use an anchor with the download attribute for a same-origin image. For JavaScript downloads, the image bytes must be available to your page; cross-origin access depends on the image server’s CORS headers.
Choose the right way to download the image
| What you need to do | Best starting method | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Save an image from a page you are viewing | Use the browser’s save-image command, or open the image URL in a tab and save it there. | The page might display a thumbnail, responsive variant, or CSS background rather than the full-size JPG. |
| Offer a download for an image on your own site | Link to the image with an anchor and a download filename. |
The attribute is intended for same-origin, blob:, and data: URLs; it does not reliably force downloads from another site. |
| Download image bytes with JavaScript | Fetch the bytes, create a Blob and object URL, then activate a download link. | For a cross-origin image, the server must allow your page’s origin through CORS. |
| The image displays but JavaScript cannot read it | Use a same-origin download route, configure CORS on the image server, or use the remote site’s own download option. | Displaying an image does not grant JavaScript permission to inspect its bytes. |
Save a JPG as a visitor
- Try the image context menu. On a desktop browser, right-click the image and choose the browser’s save-image option. The exact wording varies by browser. On a touch device, press and hold the image and use the image menu if the browser offers one.
- Open the image itself if the menu is unavailable. Use the browser’s open-image option, if available, or open the image link in a new tab. Once the image is shown directly, use the browser’s save command.
- Check which version you saved. A page can display a smaller preview while linking to a larger original. If the saved file is too small, inspect the image link or the image’s source in developer tools and look for a larger option.
Not every picture on a page is a directly downloadable JPG. A visible image might be a thumbnail, a responsive image selected for the current screen, or an image painted as a CSS background. The browser’s image context menu is the simplest option when the site permits saving, but the saved file may not be the largest version.
Find the actual image URL in HTML
For an image element, inspect its src and srcset attributes. The src gives a source URL; srcset can list multiple image files so the browser can select an appropriate one for the display conditions. The source the browser selected is not necessarily the highest-resolution file.
- Open the browser’s developer tools and inspect the displayed image element.
- Review
srcand each candidate insrcset. Check whether a candidate points to a larger image than the displayed thumbnail. - Open a candidate URL directly in a tab to see what it serves. Check the browser’s displayed file and, where available, the response content type; a filename ending in
.jpgalone does not prove the response is JPEG. - If there is no image element, inspect the relevant page styling for a
background-image. A CSS background is not exposed through an<img>element’ssrc.
Responsive image behavior and the src/srcset attributes are described in MDN’s <img> reference. A link around an image may lead to a page rather than directly to the original image, so check the destination instead of assuming it is a JPG file.

Offer a JPG download from your own page
When the image is hosted on the same origin as your page, a direct anchor is the simplest option:
<a href="/images/photo.jpg" download="photo.jpg">Download JPG</a>
The download value suggests a filename; it does not guarantee identical behavior in every browser. Depending on browser settings and server response headers, the browser may save the file, prompt, or open the image. The attribute is generally intended for same-origin URLs and blob: or data: URLs, not as a universal force-download switch for arbitrary third-party links. See the WHATWG HTML Standard’s download attribute section.

If the browser opens the image inline instead of saving it, check the response’s Content-Disposition header and the browser’s download settings. If you control the server, configure its response for the behavior and filename you want; the anchor’s filename is a suggestion, not a substitute for server configuration.
Download image bytes with JavaScript
Use JavaScript when you need to fetch the image data and trigger a download from a user action—for example, after the user clicks a button. This pattern works only if the page is permitted to read the response. A cross-origin image server must send a CORS response that allows your page’s origin.

<button id="download-image" type="button">Download image</button>
<script>
const imageUrl = "/images/photo.jpg";
document.getElementById("download-image").addEventListener("click", async () => {
const response = await fetch(imageUrl);
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Image request failed: ${response.status}`);
}
const imageBlob = await response.blob();
const objectUrl = URL.createObjectURL(imageBlob);
const link = document.createElement("a");
link.href = objectUrl;
link.download = "photo.jpg";
document.body.appendChild(link);
link.click();
link.remove();
URL.revokeObjectURL(objectUrl);
});
</script>
The leading space before document.getElementById is harmless; it may be removed when copying the example. The example uses a same-origin URL. For a cross-origin URL, the browser’s fetch request still needs permission from the image server. Handle failures in production UI so a network or permission error is shown to the user rather than becoming an unhandled promise rejection.
A Blob holds the response data, and URL.createObjectURL() creates a temporary local URL that an anchor can use. Release the object URL when it is no longer needed; if a browser or application needs a short time to begin handling a large download, defer revocation rather than revoking it immediately. See MDN’s createObjectURL reference and revokeObjectURL reference.

Why an image can display but fail to download with JavaScript
A browser can display a cross-origin image while preventing page scripts from reading its bytes. Fetching an image into a Blob, or using it in a canvas and then exporting the result, requires the server’s permission under CORS. The browser—not a client-side attribute—enforces that permission.
Setting crossorigin="anonymous" changes how the browser requests an image, but it does not grant access by itself. The remote server must return an appropriate Access-Control-Allow-Origin response. If it does not, JavaScript cannot turn the displayed image into a readable Blob or an untainted canvas export. The HTML standard describes image fetching as a potential-CORS request influenced by the crossorigin attribute; see the WHATWG image CORS settings section.

If you control the image service, configure its CORS policy for the requesting origin or serve the download through your own backend. If you do not control it, use the site’s own download feature or save the image through the browser where permitted. Do not treat a proxy as a way around another site’s access controls.
Common problems and fixes
- The saved image is blurry or too small. You may have saved a thumbnail or a responsive candidate. Inspect the image’s
srcsetand surrounding link, then open the appropriate larger source where the site allows it. - The image is visible but
fetch()fails with a CORS error. The remote server has not allowed your page’s origin. Configure CORS if you control that server, use a same-origin download route, or use the site’s own download flow. - Adding
crossorigin="anonymous"did not fix access. The browser cannot grant permission on behalf of the server. The server must send the matching CORS response header. - The link opens the JPG instead of downloading it. The
downloadattribute is not a universal command. Check whether the URL is same-origin and inspect server disposition headers and browser settings. - The extension says JPG, but the response is not a JPEG. Check the resource itself and its content type. A filename extension or link label does not establish the actual image format.
- The picture has no obvious image URL. It may be a CSS background or a wrapper page around the full image. Inspect the element’s styles and the link destination.
- The JavaScript example reports a failed request. Check the URL, network response status, authentication requirements, and whether the request is allowed by the server. Surface the error to the user and avoid creating a download link until the response succeeds.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a webpage as an image rather than retrieve the original JPG file, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, save a capture as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts and removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
